Posting before midnight local time, so this still went live on March 1st! 🎉😅

Note to Self: allow a lot more time to create these files. A lot.

Worth the time and effort, though, as I really like how they turned out. 🌸

This is my plan for the rest of the year: to have a color palette, prompt list, and tracker for the monthly

art challenges. This way it’s pretty flexible and could apply to whatever art you want to make, so more folks can join in. 🫂

I'm making this process note Public as an example of the kind of notes you get as a subscriber to my Creatr account in January 2025.

Some of the GM art has less process photos; some are more complex like this piece. There’s also a PDF of different font treatments of GM text, like the GM used in this art, available for download to subscribers (https://creatr.nostr.wine/subscribe/npub1jdtdqz9tyf4tdvy2k0rnjqz5dv5rd3yvw5nlpefn9syjqx37dhyqxwh0c8)

8 of 24 - GM PROCESS ....

Loved this fancy font GM and wanted to use it more as a design element than text.

First I tore the edges and glued the GM to my base paper with matte gel medium. Also gave it a few hard rolls with the brayer to make sure every part of the GM paper was blued down.

Next I scribbled over the GM with a white candle. The wax in the candle is going to act like a resist which (crossed-fingers) will create a cool effect when I add the other layers.

I had a few tubes of blue acrylic paints I wanted to sue up. so I brushed them on top of the GM. Used a sponge and paper towel to add some texture, and while the wax resist did work, I wanted it to stand out more. In order to make something stand out or "pop," you add contrast beside it. In this case, I added more candle strokes, a dark blue and purple Neocolor II crayons, then activated the crayons with a light brush of water. Given the look of the piece at this point, I also added some white acrylic paint splatters.

Next up is the cup to give the GM "steam" a source. I had a leftover from an art project I did years ago (teacup t-rex) but it was too large. Using it as a rough reference, I sketched in a cut with pencil ... and wished, for a moment, that I was working digitally because it was in the wrong spot. So I had to use the IRL version of copy/cut/paste which is erase/redraw, now with saucer.

I used a Sharpie fine point pen for the outline and gently erased the pencil sketch.

For the actual beverage, I rubbed on some of the same dark purple Neocolor II I used on the background, as I wanted to keep a limited color palette. A tiny bit of water brushed the purple into a liquid to fill the interior of the cup.

I tried to add some splatter and ended up with two large blobs right on the cup - splattering is always a bit nerve wracking as you can "mess up" something that you may, or may not, be able to recover.

I was able to remove the white blobs (yay!) and added a tiny spritz of white in the center to direct the eye upward to the steam letter GM.

Also added a bit of shadow with the dark blue Neocolor II crayon, and smoothened it out with a bit of water.

Thanks!

I’ve always preferred Do First, Share Later.

So much self-promotion advice to help creatives gain an audience so you can sell your art/writing/creative work revolves around social media and the need for constant content to feed the algorithms.

Putting in all that promotion work of what you plan to do (and the constant feedback on something that’s not in its final form) AND doing the actual creative work gets exhausting. Also, if the feedback is negative, you can question what you’re doing and possibly abandon something wonderful.

Yet another reason I love Nostr - so many posts are sharing what folks have Done. 💜

If you’ve subscribed to my Creatr for the

January Art Challenge of A Month of Good Mornings, I just posted a long note with process photos of how I created my first GM mixed media artwork. 🎉

I’m creating 24 artworks this month, and releasing them one at a time around 7 am for each of the main time zones.

Subscribers can see GM.1 right now; the public note with the final art should go live at 7 am UTC+1 Tuesday. I hope. 🤞

This is a photo of me making the simple, free tracker available via my nostr:npub1wdpfy4xgam85u9wxpuau24qrddpwqk53gexvnnnmguyqqtvspjeqvc0p5m account more complex because I want to keep track of three aspects of each artwork:

1. Created
2. Process note and photos for Creatr subscribers
3. Public note with final art only

Doing well on the creating part. Getting a bit behind on the writing and processing photos and scheduling notes part.

If you aren’t subscribed to my Creatr account, for a one-time payment of 1,000 sats, you get a PDF with 32 unique font treatments of GM, a spiffy tracker, and process photos and details of how I create my mixed media art: https://creatr.nostr.wine/subscribe/npub1jdtdqz9tyf4tdvy2k0rnjqz5dv5rd3yvw5nlpefn9syjqx37dhyqxwh0c8

monthly art challenges: a Creatr subscription for printables that you can download to support your efforts.

The subscription is 30 days for 1000 sats: https://creatr.nostr.wine/subscribe/npub1jdtdqz9tyf4tdvy2k0rnjqz5dv5rd3yvw5nlpefn9syjqx37dhyqxwh0c8

For January, you get a PDF that has a spiffy GM tracker, and 32 unique fonts of GM (4 per page).

These can be used however you want: add color, print and place in your outdoor photography, use as a guide for a painting or yarn project, etc.

I’ll also post behind-the-scenes descriptions and photos of how I use the printable GMs during my art challenge just for subscribers. Final art will show up on my Rustypuppy account, but only subscribers get the details. 🤫

Subscribing is Not Necessary to participate in the #nostrartstrjan2025 art challenge and there’s a free tracker over on nostr:npub1wdpfy4xgam85u9wxpuau24qrddpwqk53gexvnnnmguyqqtvspjeqvc0p5m - just not as spiffy. 😉

I want to explore what’s possible with the #Nostr app #Creatr this year and offering printables and BTS content for the art challenges is a fun way to do so. 🖌️🎨🖨️📄

A Visit from St. Nostrolas / The Night Before Christmas

• Adapted by Rustypuppy from a poem by Clement Clarke Moore

Twas the night before Christmas, when all in the house Were quietly sleeping, except me and my spouse. The relays were placed by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nostrolas soon would be there.

The plebs were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of zapping danced in their heads; And mom on her Android, and me on my Apple Had just settled by the fire to listen to its crackle.

When out in the street there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter. Away to the door I flew like a flash, And undid the lock to see who had crashed.

The moon shone brightly upon the ice and snow Giving all things around a silver-toned glow. When what to my searching eyes did display, But eight tiny nostriches pulling a sleigh.

With an open protocol that cannot be bossed, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nost. Better than X or the Book of Face, He called to all to come and embrace:

It’s global, it’s social, it’s decentralized; It keeps identity private from corporate eyes. Get your nsec and npub and client and go, write all your notes and help the Nostr to grow.

None can tame it or trap it or make it stop. Decentralization is the way to adopt. So up to the housetop the nostriches flew With the sleigh full of NIPS, and St. Nostrolas too —

And up on the roof, I heard through the snow, The scratching and tapping of each little toe. As I closed the door and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nostrolas came with a bound.

His body was covered, from his head to his foot, By a large, thick cloak, all tarnished with soot. A bundle of boxes he'd flung on his back, Gently he withdrew them and began to stack.

His eyes, what color? Were they mismatched? His face, a glimpse I never did catch. But I saw a smile, the gentle lift of a cheek, And I suddenly felt the world become far less bleak.

Then he shimmered and his cloak changed color. Astonished, I realized he was now another. Again and again: five, ten, twenty - St. Nostrolas was not one, he was many!

The spirit of developers, working all the time; He’d brought us their gifts for far less than dimes. He gave a nod of his head and the thumbs-up sign. I sighed in relief; everything would be fine.

He spoke not a work, but finished his work Connecting all the relays ... was that a tiny smirk? He turned to me, gave a two-fingered salute, Then stepped on the hearth and flew up the chute.

He sprang to his sleigh, gave his nostriches a cry, And they ran off the roof and into the sky. But I heard him exclaim, as he disappeared from sight— “Sovereign freedom for all, and to all a good night!”

In August 2024, I set up an npub.pro website from my Rustypuppy Nostr account - https://rustypuppy.npub.pro/

I've had various personal websites on and off for decades. As much time as I was spending on Nostr, I thought I might well try out this service that created a website from my Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays ... a very attractive idea, as having to post to multiple closed social media systems (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram) AND a blog was more work than I wanted to do.

First, I had to set up a browser signer; I used nsec.app - which thankfully, has very helpful documentation for the non-technical.

Then I got to play with themes - lots and lots of themes! Many are very similar, and the biggest difference tends to be placement of the content and with/without images as a focus. Picking one that worked for me was a trial and error process, which npub.pro made very easy by pulling in my own notes. I chose the Massively theme for the large header image and global navigation placement. Changing themes is simple, so that's always an option.

I initially didn't underst and how to get to some settings, or even that certain settings were available, but

was extremely patient and helpful. I do truly appreciate that about the current state of Nostr - lots of new things being built and you can usually get help from a real person involved in the building.

I use my npub.pro website site as a personal website; a link I can send to anyone and know they can see the content without having to create a specific account or download a specific app. They may not see my latest notes, but that's not a critical issue for me.

It's also an ideal way to show how Nostr is truly a protocol, not a specific app or virtual space controlled by a specific company. My content shows up on my website and in more than one Nostr app; something impossible to do with my posts on Instagram.

Eventually, I'd love to see a way to have ecommerce (fiat and sats) incorporated into my npub.pro site, because I currently use other sites (Payhip) and services (Creatr) for that functionality.

Npub.pro also offers using your own domain. It's a paid service I wasn't ready for, but when there was an offer to try it out for free, and I had the idea to do monthly art challenges, I signed up as https://www.nostrartstr.com/ - That was a much more technically involved process, dealing with changing CNAME records at the hosting service, but really good documentation got me through it on the first pass.

For NostrArtstr, I'm using the Simply theme. I also have a better appreciation for the nsec.app, as it and npub.pro make it easy to switch between my two accounts when I'm working on my websites.

For those exploring what's possible with Nostr, I highly recommend setting up an npub.pro website.

Wanted to promote

products at StoreOfValue.eu again: https://www.storeofvalue.eu/collections/bitpopart

There was an error for shipping to the US that has been fixed, so if you want to support a small biz vs. a big POD, this is the place.

Just ordered 2 tshirts, dark chocolate, and a mug. 🎉

You can pay with sats or fiat. The best of all shopping experiences.

The #artstr postcards have arrived!!!!

Photo shows front and back; pen for scale. They have an uncoated surface so are easy to write on.

These were going to be a freebie for #nostrasia but I won’t be making that trip after all, so if anyone is going that way and willing to take some postcards, please let me know.

And for anyone who has any level of #nostr get together and wants free #art accounts postcards to give out, let me know and I will mail them to you; I’m in the US, so factor in that shipping time before your event so I can use the cheapest postage possible please. 🙏

Also, for those who do get these postcards to help spread the word of a few artists’ accounts …. Try all the QR codes on your own device first. They all work, and it may take some time to load if you don’t already follow these folks. As you are waiting, you can explain relays. 😉

GM!

Post notes about you and your interests and follow this path : that’s how to be your own algorithm on Nostr.

And check out the hashtags to find folks who like the same stuff you do, so you can make those replies and have those conversations.

Another step in the on-going Nostrfication of my life … my

website is in my profile and I added that URL to my IG profile:

https://rustypuppy.npub.pro

After going all out on tag nav, I scaled it back to art and links to the #nostrichnovember art challenge and my designs on Threadless.

Once I start posting my writings (microfiction and novel chapters), I’ll add those to the nav.

If you don’t have an npub.pro website, definitely check it out. Great way to share you Nostr stuff (and intro the decentralized own your content concept) with anyone who’s not ready to leap into a client. 💜👍

Accomplishment of the Day: setting up my #nostr website with #npubpro:

https://rustypuppy.npub.pro 🎉

Really like how it’s going so far. Interesting to see how it picks up a different number of notes for hashtag categories depending if I look at it on my phone or desktop. Looking forward to using hashtags more efficiently to populate the categories.

Also, just saw it’s 5:33 pm so should probably have lunch now. 🥪

Many thanks to

and all those who make these tech things work for untechs like myself. 🫂

TL;DR - I processed a lot of fiat world stuff yesterday and this article by Ryan Holiday resonated with me: https://ryanholiday.net/please-dont-do-this-to-yourself/

LONG PART: I refer to my fiat mine days as Life 1.0 and now, after retirement, as Life 2.0.

I’ve been retire for a few years. I’ve made progress in deprogramming myself from a lot of Life 1.0 thinking and behaviors. That also means I’ve reached the point of dealing with the really ingrained stuff … like any project (art or writing) should, ultimately, end up with something to sell, and when it doesn’t, I feel guilty that I’ve “wasted my time.” I also feel anxious about starting a new project, given the assumption it has to produce something that will result in a “product” people will pay for.

I sat and worked with that for a few hours yesterday. Lots of notes and a few Kleenex. It’s a weird feeling, processing thoughts and emotions, cracking shells you didn’t realize you were living in.

End was result was clarity on 2 points …

1. Doing something without the end result of “something to sell” is still a work in progress for me (30 years of programming takes time and effort to undo). Nostr definitely helps with this, as I can share what I create here. Maybe I get sats; maybe not, but I believe sharing my art and writing here has a greater impact because there is so much less noise here that even a little signal like mine can reach someone and possible mean something to them. Which is why all the writing I’ve been keeping for “selling someday” will be coming out here, #nostronly, in 2025. 💜

2. “Waste of time” is a judgement; an evaluation determined by this inner productivity manager I have. I’ve never felt I had an “inner critic” about my art or writing, but apparently this other voice is just as demanding. I have a friend who swam with whales and drift raced down an incredible mountain road. I don’t consider those a “waste of time” - I think they are incredible experiences and I’m glad she has them. If I sit and swatch 50 watercolor paints, some could judge that it’s not as a great an experience as swimming with whales, but that’s their comparison/evaluation/judgement based on how they would use their time; that there’s something better to do. Well, “better” is another judgement. And that inner productivity manager is just another someone else; someone I don’t need to listen to any more because the rules of Life 1.0 do not apply to my Life 2.0.

Repost - I still have 5 slots left if any #artstr wants a QR code to their #nostr account on a printed postcard I’m taking to #nostrasia

#art #nostronly #grownostr #postcard #promotion #artwork

My idea for an #artstr postcard I’d take to #nostrasia in September.

5 QR codes (taken from Primal, so it tries to open a Nostr client) to npubs on each side of a 4” x 6” postcard.

These are mockups; I can get 100 for $35.

One side will have a QR code to the hashtag #artstr and the other side will have a QR code to the hashtag #art. Those QR codes are generated by Vistaprint based on the Primal website URL and will be placed in the purple box beside the text when I put in the order.

So if you regularly share your art on Nostr and want to be part of this, please say so in the comments - 9 slots currently open.

If more than 9 folks want to participate, I can do another run of a different postcard, and would ask for some fiat/sat help at that point.

And then I take my #turdsoup prompt over to

to play in their AI Studio using the SDXL-Lightning generator.

No adjustments made; these are the images the AI rendered based on the following prompts.

1. original prompt from my turdsoup.com word lists: “stalk tomato lion”
2. variation: “red lion stalking through cityscape”
3. variation: “baby lion crouching on giant tomato planet”

Fun way to brainstorm, as these can be used as reference images for my own artwork.

Playing with word lists on turdsoup.com so I can create art prompts. 📝🎨

So far, I’ve published Colors, Animals, and Action Verb lists to the Marketplace for folks to use. I have a few more ideas, and am open to suggestions for what kind of word lists #artstr folks would find useful.

Thanks to
