Back in BC. Mom’s doing well after her hip replacement surgery and relieved to be home. Two more weeks of easy movements then the physio starts. 🦾

Back home after 2 months in Canada helping my mom jump administrative hoops to get hip replacement surgery.

Home for 3 weeks before going back up to help with travel to the surgery center in a different province, post-op, travel home, and a few months of rehab. I’m so grateful I’m retired and have the time to be able to do this for her.

All the flower photos I’ve been posting were from her garden. She’s very much looking forward to getting back out there once this process is done.

This hibiscus (whose flower was larger than my hand) was at a shopping center Boyfriend and I visited yesterday for ice cream and a bookstore.

My sister sent my mom a bouquet from a local nursery for Mother’s Day. It’s an amazing mix of what you’d expect with wildflowers and things I didn’t know existed. Really special arrangement that my mom enjoyed tremendously. 💐

My wild orchids are out! So happy they survived that last freeze, as they had grown out quite a bit in our warm December and January.

My mom gave me 5 plants when she and my dad moved to Canada almost 20 years ago. They’ve now taken over this bed and are such a joy to see every Spring.

My mom planted these around 20 years ago in my backyard. No matter what happens to them: mowing, covered with dirt from plumbing excavation, so many days without rain the earth cracks…. a few days after a heavy rain, they rise again.

Got behind on the

May art challenge due to a few headache days before we had storms.

Then I was fine… and still didn’t draw the flowers.

Whenever I avoid doing something, I try and figure out why.

The realization I came to was: I enjoy creating the art challenges more than I enjoy doing them. At least daily. And at least this flower one.

I’m really excited about the September art challenge because I’ve had that idea for a while (and yes, I also enjoy planning ahead 😬).

So, here’s the totality of my May art challenge:

• 5 drawn flowers (really liked how the calla lily turned out, so it made for a good ending point)
• 31 flower icons from the tracker pages, cut out and edged with black marker, and glued to the flash cards (just in case I want to come back to this someday)
• cover and back panel ready for assembly when I get home

Buttercup practice and flower id flash card. I’ve also started making more notes on the practice page so (hopefully) whenever I come back to these I’ll still be able to draw a version I like. 🌼

This is a meadow buttercup; Persian buttercups look quite different.

The yellow light that appears on someone’s chin when they hold a buttercup flower is due to the light reflective structure of the petals, which also helps attract pollinators.

Practice sheet and final flower id flash card for Begonia.

When looking for references, turns out there are A Lot of different flower types for begonias. There are also male and female flowers, with the males having multiple layers of petals and the female usually only having one layer…. so that info ended up being my text clues.

My drawing isn’t as “begonia” as the reference, but for this project, it works. ✅

I’m currently going through “How to Draw Flowers: A Step By Step Guide for Realistic Drawing Projects” by Martha Blonde. 🌸

I didn’t pay attention to what kind of pencil I put in my bag before traveling. This is an H and takes a bit of effort to erase. May try and find a softer pencil at a store next week.

The pen is a Uniball Air Micro which is my favorite right now. 🖊️

Second jigsaw puzzle finished with Mom. It’s 1000 pieces and was a lot of fun. I found it in a bookstore.

What the designer did with that limited color palette is impressive: no real reds (the strawberries are almost the same orange as the wild rose background) and no purples.
