First jigsaw puzzle of this trip completed! 🦅

This came to us via the puzzle group, so someone had already finished it, and separated the pieces into 3 parts. Usually Mom and I mix everything together, but we left the pieces segmented and did one part at a time because we only had a week to finish it.

Even parsed into segments, this was a tough puzzle. Lots of little wingtips and similar colors and patterns.

Last week, a bald eagle flew so low and close I could see its eye … I just watched it bank over me and head up to the trees instead of reaching for my phone/camera.

Yesterday I saw a bald eagle near the same spot, this time high up on the mountain. Got a photo of a tiny black blob with a smaller white blob on top, so while not a great photo in and of itself, it is a reminder of that previous amazing close encounter. 🦅

Behold the Barn Swallow of April, a Travel theme!

This is the 4th mixed media artwork I’ve completed for the art challenge

ran last year.

Background is layers of old airline boarding passes, acrylic paint, tan tissue paper to create the land-looking bits, white tissue paper for the cloud-looking bits, gold ink, stencils, and various pens and pencils.

The barn swallow was generated by ChatGPT to my specs, printed on copy paper, fussy cut and colored with Copic markers.

Now …. onto May!

Went out the front door to pick up a package and was surprised to see a hummingbird on my Turk’s cap.

This is the one photo that actually has the hummingbird in it …. compared to all the photos of where hummingbird had just been.

Because becoming an older adult apparently means becoming a #birdstr I finally identified the raptor that’s been hanging out in my neighborhood: a Mississippi Kite.

Apparently they show up here in the summer. I’ve seen 2 flying, and one sitting on a telephone wire at a red light, which is when I got a good enough look to ID it - those ruby eyes really stand out against that light gray face.

Last hike on the mountain because I fly home tomorrow.

And heard a loud squawking near the parking lot on the way back … sounded like a duck was being tortured.

Turned out to be 2 Steller’s Jays. Love the shimmering blue on these birds. They are in Texas, but not my area, so it’s always great to see them when I visit BC.

Gray, cloudy cold day on the mountain walk. Very flat light, but got some great photos of the valley, a male quail portrait, a soaring red tailed hawk, and the sign of the Sweet Potato Trail Guardian: give a cupcake, complete the eastern trail, and you will have good luck for 3 days.

Finished another jigsaw puzzle with Mom, this time 500 pieces.

She’s great at the more abstract/no detail areas because she sorts by shape, while I sort by color and detail.

Final result from this morning’s art lesson with the neighbor. Really like how it turned out. Having some instruction on how to use these watercolor markers made such a difference. Also more practice as it takes me a few times to get back into the Just Let It Flow mode of watercolor anything.

Using hot press paper worked well - I’d only really played with cold press before.

She’s letting me hang onto the markers until Thursday because her grandkids are coming over and she won’t have time to use them. She also gave me some art books she didn’t want anymore so I have lots to play with over the next few days. 🎉

We’ve been watering the flowers in a neighbor’s backyard for the past week while they were in vacation. She’s an artist and came by today to pick up her key. As a Thank You, she brought a shoe box filled with small acrylic paintings- Mom and I each got to choose one. This is my new little chickadee friend!
