Finished the cheetah collage. It’s the first in a sketchbook I’ll be exchanging with a friend once a month. Looking forward to seeing what she adds on the next page.

In addition to the metallic watercolor, I added colored pencil to get closer to a natural cheetah fur and eye color, and re-colored the spots with a Micron pen.

Very back flower layer is a paper napkin. Went through a few iterations before I was happy with how it supported the front layers.

Finished a grid of 3 in x 3 in (7.62 cm x 7.62 cm) collages after watching Margarete Miller video - highly recommend her if you want to get into paper collage -> https://m.youtube.com/c/MargareteMiller

Really like how these came out. Different yet cohesive.

Second photo is the 3 papers I started with from my mom’s junk mail and the focal points I pulled from a 1974 Webster’s illustrated dictionary.

Rest of the photos show the process a using a Stabilo All Black pencil to scribble, then brush with water, to create the background… which is why the paper is so warped as it’s meant for sketching not mixed media.

Going to try and flatten the collages under some heavy books this afternoon.

When you think you know what you want to do for an art project, but by the time you finish going through your paper stash, said art project is now something else. 📜

For once, the tea is not to drink; it’s to stain paper. 🫖

Final torn collage card. Holding it at an angle so you can see the metallic bronze Sharpie hearts in the solid purple strip. 🤎

When you’re playing around with torn paper collage and can’t decide which version to glue down so you take photos of the variations because looking at a photos feels different than looking at the paper and you realize you took the same configuration twice so you must really like that one.

#artstr retail therapy: 50% off Christmas paper and a pack of 8” x 8” canvas boards.

I was too late to make Christmas cards this year, but still wanted to create something holiday, so going with collage and mixed media on small boards.

No plans, just playing with paper and paint and other stuff.

Sharing Past Art… 7/7

Last note about these past collages. There’s more in the book, but the ones I’ve been sharing represent the range I had at the time.

It was really interesting to review these, especially compared to the collages I did this June-July #artchallenge #indexcardaday #dyicad2024 which used less supplies and were more intricate in terms of cutting.

1. Titian Mode - Titian is a “very warm and reddish brownish-orange colour” named after the 16th century painter. Titian mode is an anagram of meditation; my attempt at gamification because “Engaging Titian Mode!” 🦸 appeals to my genre brain more than “I will practice meditation.” 🧘

This is a book I made in 2022. At the time, it was just an online class project. The pages are acrylic paint and stamping; the signatures sewn together with waxed thread and ribbon to help keep the overall shape.

I ended up doing collages in it as I went through the Camp Calm meditation class by David Cain at Raptitude.

I’ll share some of those collages starting tomorrow.

Done! 🎉 61 paper collages on 3” x 5” index cards for the Index Card A Day Art Challenge. ✂️📚

And a reminder for anyone who needs it: make an art challenge work for you. Use that goal to explore how you enjoy creating art.

I started these only doing one a day. It stressed me. Then I changed to binging - create 2 or 3 or 4 a day. Found out I prefer to do 3 a day max. Makes me feel accomplished, the ideas still feel fresh and the implementation works. More than that I feel drained and end up flipping through image after image and nothing sparks at all.

I understand the value of the Journey.

I also love the Destination when I look back at all I accomplished. 😍

Will continue to post these once a day until the end of July.

Thinking about how I want to continue the Index Card A Day art challenge in July. I can make it to the end of June with my current magazine. Because I still want to continue the collage aspect, that means buying a new magazine, or something else I can cut up and remix.

Thrift store to the rescue!

Also changing up my process: with the magazine, I’d look through the pages, something catches my attention, I tear out the page and keep looking for something to go with it. With these books, I’m going to cut out a bunch of images, then go through the pile and see what happens.

Interested to find out how the difference in process affects the collages, if at all.

6/61 - Decor. Took a few process photos for this one ….

1. final 3” x 5” (index card) magazine collage

2. using a craft knife is too hard on my hands, so I very carefully cut out the window panes, making sure some part of what I want to keep is still attached somewhere

3. Original flowers in vase … sticks out too much to the left to fit the 3” width of the index card so ….

4. I get rid of part of the flowers. Really liked the brickwork, but it was horizontal, and I needed a vertical piece to fit behind the flower vase so …

5. I flip one piece of the brickwork 180 degrees, cut along a line of mortar, and match the bricks to create the background I need.

6. Glue stick time! Start with the door frames.

7. Once everything is glued to the index card, flip over and trim the edges.

8. See #1 for final art 😄
