Rustypuppy

End of July is the end of the Index Card a Day art challenge. It happens every year, so if you didn’t try it out this year, how about next year?

This is one I made in 2021. Gelli plate/stamp/stencil background, clock sticker.

A little reminder to make time for making your art. 🕰️

Sharing Past Art… 7/7

Last note about these past collages. There’s more in the book, but the ones I’ve been sharing represent the range I had at the time.

It was really interesting to review these, especially compared to the collages I did this June-July #artchallenge #indexcardaday #dyicad2024 which used less supplies and were more intricate in terms of cutting.

2 spreads from my handmade book with mixed media backgrounds and collage foregrounds as notes from the Camp Calm online meditation class in 2022.

And that’s a wrap for my participation in the 2024 Index Card A Day art challenge. 🎉

Created some really fun collages, some of which sparked story ideas, so I may recreate the image and write a matching microfiction. 💡🖌️✍️

Done! 🎉 61 paper collages on 3” x 5” index cards for the Index Card A Day Art Challenge. ✂️📚

And a reminder for anyone who needs it: make an art challenge work for you. Use that goal to explore how you enjoy creating art.

I started these only doing one a day. It stressed me. Then I changed to binging - create 2 or 3 or 4 a day. Found out I prefer to do 3 a day max. Makes me feel accomplished, the ideas still feel fresh and the implementation works. More than that I feel drained and end up flipping through image after image and nothing sparks at all.

I understand the value of the Journey.

I also love the Destination when I look back at all I accomplished. 😍

Will continue to post these once a day until the end of July.

Am definitely liking the mini-binge sessions of collaging compared to one a day. Got 4 completed this afternoon. The ebb and flow of finding pieces that fit what I was working on as well as possibly another was relaxing; smooth transitions between production and planning.

Now I just have to be sure and put the photos in an album so I can find them to post in a week. 😅

Thinking about how I want to continue the Index Card A Day art challenge in July. I can make it to the end of June with my current magazine. Because I still want to continue the collage aspect, that means buying a new magazine, or something else I can cut up and remix.

Thrift store to the rescue!

Also changing up my process: with the magazine, I’d look through the pages, something catches my attention, I tear out the page and keep looking for something to go with it. With these books, I’m going to cut out a bunch of images, then go through the pile and see what happens.

Interested to find out how the difference in process affects the collages, if at all.

Photo#2: cut her reflection away from her body.

Photo#3: traced around the reflection to have the same shape but with a curtain pattern …. Was thinking something along the lines of “wallflower” or “window dressing” as the theme

Photo#4: didn’t like how it looked at all, but still wanted to use that shape.

Photo#1: used a bookcase image for the reflection shape and added little statue head.

For anyone who needs to hear it ….

The challenges You take on for Yourself follow Your rules, which You can change at any time.

Like working ahead on “daily” magazine collages. 👍

I originally cut out a glass (second photo). After seeing what was on the back, I decided to use the all caps words and took a marker to block out the other words.

One of the perils of using magazine pages for collage is you have to choose which side to sacrifice. 😅

6/61 - Decor. Took a few process photos for this one ….

1. final 3” x 5” (index card) magazine collage

2. using a craft knife is too hard on my hands, so I very carefully cut out the window panes, making sure some part of what I want to keep is still attached somewhere

3. Original flowers in vase … sticks out too much to the left to fit the 3” width of the index card so ….

4. I get rid of part of the flowers. Really liked the brickwork, but it was horizontal, and I needed a vertical piece to fit behind the flower vase so …

5. I flip one piece of the brickwork 180 degrees, cut along a line of mortar, and match the bricks to create the background I need.

6. Glue stick time! Start with the door frames.

7. Once everything is glued to the index card, flip over and trim the edges.

8. See #1 for final art 😄
