Thinking I'm going to be changing to a different account name. Same server, but a different account name. I've long used my name on various accounts and my own website but with things as they are in the US I'm taking steps to reduce the most obvious exposure and easy access to my identity.

I've felt very conflicted on this. On the one hand, I've always been open about my activism and beliefs online and in my community. But having my name hard-coded as the actual account name that I can't easily change seems like an unnecessary risk given where things are in the US and where they seem to be headed. What risk is acceptable?

That said, I have no illusions about being anonymous. That's not my intent. I've been publishing on the internet for nearly 30 years. I still have a blog that I intend to keep. But I have been taking measures to gradually scrub my name, location, etc from the most obvious places just as an added layer of obfuscation.

🤷🏾‍♂️

In 100% agreement especially with her concluding statement at the end of the interview.

For better or worse, it seems increasingly likely that the US as the dominant power on the planet is coming to a close. I'm not sure what to say about China being that new power but the US has been blocking climate progress for decades and under the current regime it's clear US policy is now a double down in the wrong direction.

Between increasing climate related disruption and geopolitics and economics, just, shit. This just looks like an intensifying disaster for the planet.

I'm not a website accessibility expert but I've been learning the past few months and as of a week ago I've got our local rural regional library's website up to a solid result according to the IBM Accessibilty Checker extension for Mozilla. There are still some improvements to be made but we're getting there.

The last time I looked there were no other Missouri sites even close to passing which is a shame. Frankly, very few websites I've checked pass.

Also, look at all the cool stuff my local library does! Use your local library and volunteer if you can. I can think of no other social space as important as a #library in a society that strives for continuing #education, #learning #literacy, #democracy and anything resembling #freedom.

Be a part of yours!

100% this. But also as it pointed out in the video, the United States is not a #democracy, is not democratic, it is not governed by the people. This is by design, and this has been the case for the entirety of the nation's existence I've mentioned Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States several times recently as I'm reading through it, and I will continue to recommend it. It makes pretty clear, what is also pointed out in this linked essay, the details are there decade after decade after decade. The political process of the United States, the two party system, this is not democracy, it is a fucking sham and always has been. Is a system designed by the wealthy for the wealthy.

In the months leading up to May 1, 2026 let's build a GLOBAL #BOYCOTT. People can begin now, pledge to delete their accounts at the major US tech platforms:

• #Amazon
• #Google
• #Meta
• #Microsoft
• #Apple

Imagine for a minute, what that looks like! The lead-up to that day and the actual day. If hundreds of millions people, globally, were to actually delete their accounts (or at least stop using them to purchase services). Those CEOS, those boards and stock holders SHOULD FEAR US. They think themselves isolated from their actions.

We should not just talk shit about them, we should end their companies, we should cut their companies to the ground.

With the internet, is such a thing really so far fetched? For fucks sake, we have the internet.

THEY. SHOULD. FEAR. US. WE. SHOULD. MAKE. THEM. FEAR. US.

Global Boycott. Start now. Build, build, build. #DeleteDay2026 #TheyShouldBeAfraid

Dare to imagine kicking those fuckers in their testicles.

Dream with me. No, really. Close your eyes and imagine a day, May 1, 2026.

In the months leading up to May 1 a GLOBAL campaign is organized. On May 1 (or before) people pledge to delete their accounts at the major US tech platforms:

Imagine for a minute, what they looks like. The lead-up to that day and the actual day. If hundreds of millions people, globally, were to actually do that.

100% agreed with the sentiment of a boycott of the US.

But, let's acknowledge that the violence of the US started 250 years ago with genocide of the indigenous people of these continents. Then continued in slavery and violent foreign interventions as far back as the 1800s.

Violence and resource theft is a foundational element of US domestic and foreign policy. Trump is just being more open about it. Please, let's be totally honest about this history!

Any boycott, to be honest, needs to go far beyond Trump and acknowledge what came before and what would come after. Trump and his regime is a big red, pussy zit that's rupturing all over itself and everyone else.

Now is the time for a full reckoning with 70+ years of US hegemony. The global community, Northern and Southern nations, have an opportunity to begin a re-balancing of the global order.

A better, more fair and sane world will be one where the US is demoted. No better, no more powerful than any other.

Daily reminder to #Apple enthusiasts that claim it's too hard to transition to other options: The Enshitification will only get worse.

YOU are CHOOSING in part because you don't want to make an effort. It's easier to complain and weakly protest. Americans are really good at this while they avoid any actual action. This is how we got here (hand wavy gesture).

YOU control YOUR COMPUTING. YOU.

Yes, it requires effort. Why not start now with small steps to begin a process to gradually replace Apple Services and apps. Download the #FOSS apps that can replace the Apple's Mac apps:

• LibreOffice to replace Pages, Numbers, Keynote
• Mullvad which better protects your privacy compared to Safari
• Thunderbird for an email client
• Proton to replace iCloud email, calendar, iCloud Drive
• Ente.io for cloud photos and sharing

Don't give up before you try. Your #freedom and #privacy are worth the effort.

A fantastic post that makes an excellent point: Liberty, freedom and computing ethics really do matter. Now more than ever.

And Matt's process of extricating himself is right on. He's doing it gradually, as he suggests, "quiet quitting". SLOW, STEADY. If you're deeply entrenched in Apple services don't quit before you start because it seems too much to do.

Slow, steady steps. In the end, you will be more free.

YOU WILL BE MORE FREE.

This is important.

Great post. Another Apple user struggling with Tim Cook and the current state of Apple.

As a former long-time user, I get it. 34 years and I was in deep. It takes time, effort and some determination to ESCAPE their maze. Even more difficult if it's a whole family. I suspect that if it can be made into a team effort, it's more doable. It IS a challenge but the outcome is worth it and it leads to greater user freedom which is something we don't think about enough.

Shackles are never good.

Posted by an #Apple user just now. Not sure if it is a user created playlist or official but let me just say, FUCK YOU APPLE. You can stick your attempt at profit by marketing protest songs straight up TIM COOK'S ASS.

You insulting fucks.

#Boycott

BOYCOTT. BOYCOTT. BOYCOTT.

It's convenient to think that boycotts don't work because then we can just keep buying whatever we want. But boycotts often do work. As recently as a few months ago pressure was put on Disney for suspending Jimmy Kimmel. But there's a much longer history of very successful boycotts. Ever heard of Rosa Parks?

Of course, Apple's HUGE. Even more reason to stop giving them all the money. No one forces you to buy a new iPhone every other year or subscribe to AppleTV.

Yes, but, also, anything for profit, anything for the stock price. Also, It's not corporate betrayal, it's #capitalism. Corporations do capitalism and that's what we see here.

Corporations do no care for humanity, if it seems to you that they do, that's marketing. Apple marketing has created story about a company that cares about #privacy, creativity and helping humans be better. #Apple marketing has convinced people it is the caring rebel.

It's not betrayal because it was never for you.

I don't ever want to read/hear another Apple fan blather on about the supposed high quality of Apple's OS/app design.

Rapid Response Networks in the Twin Cities: A Guide to an Updated Model

The rapid response networks people organized to defend their communities against federal agents seeking to kidnap, brutalize, and terrorize them have undergone a whirlwind evolution to keep up with ever-shifting Immigration and Customs Enforcement tactics. Over the past month and a half of occupation, volunteers in the Twin Cities have continuously updated their rapid response. #Resist #Fascism #ICE

Enough complaining. Initiate & organize a campaign.

Make concrete demands. Spitballing:

• Tim Cook's firing
• Demand Apple publicly state opposition to current #ICE actions
• Apple commitments to human rights, democracy and rule of law

Follow with actions against Apple including:

• Consumer boycott
• Store pickets
• Call on Apple employees to organize/make demands from the inside

Make news, shift the conversation rather than let #Apple dictate conversation with their product releases.

If Apple users and developers are really disgusted w/ Cook, here's a thought: Initiate a campaign.

Make concrete demands. Spitballing:

• Boycott campaign with demands starting with Tim Cook's firing
• Demand Apple publicly state opposition to current ICE actions
• Push Apple on commitments to human rights and democracy
• Call on Apple employees to make demands from the inside

Follow with actions against Apple including store pickets and a boycott. Make news, shift the conversation.

I don't disagree but I would add that the problem goes deeper than Tim Cook's disgusting behavior. At least his conduct is out in the open. There's a lot going on with Apple that should have users questioning their continued use of it's products. But let's be honest, it's not just Apple. All of US-based big tech is making user hostile decisions.

#BigTech has been enjoying a free ride for decades because their shiny gadgets have so many enraptured. It's past the time to take a hard look at that.

Are #Apple enthusiasts that post about Apple's latest product release also doing free Apple Marketing?

Yes, yes they are.

Connecting the dots (and this isn't that hard), is voluntarily doing marketing for a company who directly supports a fascist regime for favors bootlicking by extension?

Why the fuck would anyone opposed to #fascism and #ICE murders volunteer to do free marketing for a company and CEO (FUCK YOU TIM COOK) engaged in active fascist bootlicking?

Get off your knees.

It was -2° in my area this morning, 56° in my cabin. But, honestly, my rage keeps me toasty warm.

Also, just cause, I haven't said it today, fuck #ICE and this violent, garbage authoritarian regime.

FUCK TIM COOK. FUCK APPLE. And fuck the rest of these fucking fascist fucks.

They're allegiance to fascism and violence is the real profanity.

American tech oligarchs and their companies need to be shunned (shunning is just the beginning of what they deserve).

Shun these fuckers, their products, their companies. No bullshit excuse "they're just doing what they need to do."

We'll need much more of this. The people of #Minnesota have been giving the rest of the nation a lesson in how we resist #ICE. This is how we do it. This is the template for how we #Resist.

It's been 1 year of increasing fascism but the horror thus far is just the beginning. At the very least we should expect years of low-intensity civil war.

Prepare for long-term #GeneralStrike:

• Save money
• Set meetings with your neighbors, build block-based #selfdefense
• Get on #Signal, set-up groups

YES. Read Warner's post. This is something I've also been writing about for a very long time. Until we fully reckon with the historical foundations of the United States we will not be free. Our nation is still bound to #genocide, land theft, #settlercolonialism, slavery and violent international interventions. We cannot pretend otherwise. We cannot ignore the fundamental truths of this nation.

If we want #freedom and #justice, we must start with the #truth. #democracy #classwar #capitalism

Aaron gets it. Great post. It's time to move past US-based tech. In fact, it's time to move past US dominance, period. Our world is out of balance and the US has led in the wrong direction.

In regards to tech, we can all do this. There are great solutions right now. But YOU do have to make an effort. Buck-up. Making the world better requires us to put forth effort. Do. The. Work.

Definitely make the effort. 100% YES. But the Democrats are generally useless with little to no spine. Schumer? Jeffries? 😂

The Democratic Party is Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown joke on endless repeat.

I see angry Democrats/liberal posts here every few days, frothing at the mouth blaming "leftists" who they claim are responsible for Trump. They never seem capable of acknowledging the craven, mealy mouth conduct of their party. It's always, get in line, our way or no way.

Or Venezuela.

But it fits with the past 250 years of constant interventions across the planet. We should not be surprised. The difference is that the current regime is just being so honest about a foreign policy of subjugation that had previously been carried out more quietly.

This moment is just the truthful expression of the #US.

The Justice Department isn't now openly saying that isn't going to release the Epstein files.

Folks, are we surprised? COME. THE. FUCK. ON.

If this is fascism as we know it is, we should also understand that they do not intend to backdown. They do not intend to obey or respect the rule of law.

#FASCISM. They will do what they want. The pretense of #democracy, law, etc no longer applies. NEW FUCKING RULES. Elections? Lol. Stop pretending because they no longer are.

#GeneralStrike

Agreed 100%. ICE is not the problem. The problem is the latent #fascism that was always lurking behind the facade of democracy.

#Democracy in the US has always been a fucking lie, an illusion put in front of the brutal #capitalist machine built on #genocide, #landtheft, #colonialism and subjugation. The white middle class insistence that democracy was real is an expression of privilege and #whitesupremacy.

250 years of #shame, that is the #US. I encourage you to read Zinn's People's History.

Agreed with the erosion of the #Apple ecosystem. I'm not "almost equally happy" running GNU/Linux, I love using it in a way that previously enjoyed macOS & iPadOS. I don't feel the hardware constraints Rui mentions on a 2018 Thinkpad or on my 2012 Mac Mini. Daily html/css coding, page layout with Scribus, vector work w/ Inkscape are all very fast. Mint Cinnamon on the Thinkpad, Trisquel with KDE Plasma on the Mini is perfectly responsive.

Bonus: No #Fascism! #FreeSoftware #FOSS #Privacy

Hopefully you've already switched your email away from Gmail. If not, you can get a free account at Proton or Tuta! Both offer options for fully encrypted email. Given growing fascism in the US why not switch? Both also offer affordable paid plans.

One of those, the song Anarchy, is about the anarchist Ammon Hennacy: "American Christian pacifist, anarchist, Wobbly, social activist, and member of the Catholic Worker Movement.
