Daily reminder to #Apple enthusiasts that claim it's too hard to transition to other options: The Enshitification will only get worse.

YOU are CHOOSING in part because you don't want to make an effort. It's easier to complain and weakly protest. Americans are really good at this while they avoid any actual action. This is how we got here (hand wavy gesture).

YOU control YOUR COMPUTING. YOU.

Yes, it requires effort. Why not start now with small steps to begin a process to gradually replace Apple Services and apps. Download the #FOSS apps that can replace the Apple's Mac apps:

• LibreOffice to replace Pages, Numbers, Keynote
• Mullvad which better protects your privacy compared to Safari
• Thunderbird for an email client
• Proton to replace iCloud email, calendar, iCloud Drive
• Ente.io for cloud photos and sharing

Don't give up before you try. Your #freedom and #privacy are worth the effort.

A fantastic post that makes an excellent point: Liberty, freedom and computing ethics really do matter. Now more than ever.

And Matt's process of extricating himself is right on. He's doing it gradually, as he suggests, "quiet quitting". SLOW, STEADY. If you're deeply entrenched in Apple services don't quit before you start because it seems too much to do.

Slow, steady steps. In the end, you will be more free.

YOU WILL BE MORE FREE.

This is important.

One of my local volunteer projects is the library's website which I'm updating this morning as Cosmo waits for second breakfast.

Happily using #FreeSoftware: ghostwriter for markdown conversion to html. Then I'll use Kate to edit a couple html files then upload with Filezilla. #GNU #Linux

"When Beijing pressured Apple to remove apps, to store Chinese user data on Chinese servers, to make the iPhone a tool of state surveillance for Chinese citizens—Apple complied. Silently. Efficiently. As Cook’s supply chain required.

This is not a company that can stand up to authoritarianism. This is a company that has made itself a instrument of authoritarianism, because the alternative is losing access to the factories that build its products." #Apple #Tech #Fascism

Dwayne Monroe will return to the show to discuss some of the programs ICE uses to monitor cell phone data of entire neighborhoods without a warrant.

Discussed: -404 Media's recent article "Inside ICE’s Tool to Monitor Phones in Entire Neighborhoods" -Commercial location data, in this case acquired from hundreds of millions of phones via a company called Penlink, can be queried without a warrant

"It is absolutely unconscionable that, as of this writing, X is not only still on the App Store but is ranked #1 in “News” and that Grok is the #3 free app. Moreover, there has been—as far as I have seen—no public statement from Apple or Cook about this situation in the days, at least, over which it has unfolded. Probably because it is indefensible. "

2025 End of year personal computing check-in

I've written quite a bit over the past 11 months about flipping the table on my personal computing. All very unexpected but what a relief to have done it. And also very satisfying to know that my computing now fits my personal ethics in a way that it did not before.

Community Computer Upcycle

"A few weeks back I began thinking about the possibility of starting up a local community project to upcycle older computers. I contacted a local nonprofit where a friend works, Madison County Recovery Allies (MCRA), as well as my local regional library where I've been volunteering for several years. I sent both orgs a proposal and both want to join in...
