Thinking I'm going to be changing to a different account name. Same server, but a different account name. I've long used my name on various accounts and my own website but with things as they are in the US I'm taking steps to reduce the most obvious exposure and easy access to my identity.

I've felt very conflicted on this. On the one hand, I've always been open about my activism and beliefs online and in my community. But having my name hard-coded as the actual account name that I can't easily change seems like an unnecessary risk given where things are in the US and where they seem to be headed. What risk is acceptable?

That said, I have no illusions about being anonymous. That's not my intent. I've been publishing on the internet for nearly 30 years. I still have a blog that I intend to keep. But I have been taking measures to gradually scrub my name, location, etc from the most obvious places just as an added layer of obfuscation.

Agreed with the erosion of the #Apple ecosystem. I'm not "almost equally happy" running GNU/Linux, I love using it in a way that previously enjoyed macOS & iPadOS. I don't feel the hardware constraints Rui mentions on a 2018 Thinkpad or on my 2012 Mac Mini. Daily html/css coding, page layout with Scribus, vector work w/ Inkscape are all very fast. Mint Cinnamon on the Thinkpad, Trisquel with KDE Plasma on the Mini is perfectly responsive.

Hopefully you've already switched your email away from Gmail. If not, you can get a free account at Proton or Tuta! Both offer options for fully encrypted email. Given growing fascism in the US why not switch? Both also offer affordable paid plans.

2025 End of year personal computing check-in

I've written quite a bit over the past 11 months about flipping the table on my personal computing. All very unexpected but what a relief to have done it. And also very satisfying to know that my computing now fits my personal ethics in a way that it did not before.

As we go deeper into #Fascism this is all going to get so much worse. That seems obvious but when I look around I see people still behaving as though nothing of significance has happened. Posting to Facebook, TikTok, etc with little caution. Using smart phones with little to no effort towards increased #privacy or #security.

A lot of us having been using the word fascism or similar to describe what's going on in the US. We see the power that is being given to ICE, see link as one example. The admin is not hiding how it wants to use the military.
