I Loved What the Internet Could Have Been
I loved the internet when it felt like a commons.
When curiosity was enough.
When anonymity was safety, not cruelty.
When you could think out loud without being turned into a target.
I loved it when:
• questions weren’t treated as threats
• disagreement didn’t mean exile
• humor softened edges instead of sharpening knives
• silence was allowed
I loved it before #optimization learned how to aim.
Cluster bombs of the soul. 😭
Before attention became territory.
Before #algorithms learned our weak spots.
Before every #thought had to declare allegiance.
The internet could ( should ) have been:
• a library without guards
• a café without microphones
• a place to be unfinished
• a place to meet without performing
Instead, it became efficient.
Efficient at sorting people.
Efficient at amplifying fear.
Efficient at turning #humans into #narratives instead of neighbors.
That’s why I’m sad — not angry.
Because you don’t mourn what never mattered.
You mourn what you loved.
And loving what the internet could have been doesn’t make you naive.
It makes you a witness.
the bittersweet root
Disallowed truth without love
