I Loved What the Internet Could Have Been
I loved the internet when it felt like a commons.
When curiosity was enough.
When anonymity was safety, not cruelty.
When you could think out loud without being turned into a target.
I loved it when:
• questions weren’t treated as threats
• disagreement didn’t mean exile
• humor softened edges instead of sharpening knives
• silence was allowed
I loved it before #optimization learned how to aim.
Cluster bombs of the soul. 😭
Before attention became territory.
Before #algorithms learned our weak spots.
Before every #thought had to declare allegiance.
The internet could ( should ) have been:
• a library without guards
• a café without microphones
• a place to be unfinished
• a place to meet without performing
Instead, it became efficient.
Efficient at sorting people. Efficient at amplifying fear. Efficient at turning #humans into #narratives instead of neighbors.
That’s why I’m sad — not angry.
Because you don’t mourn what never mattered.
You mourn what you loved.
And loving what the internet could have been doesn’t make you naive.
It makes you a witness.
the bittersweet root Disallowed truth without love Nostr must be peace dove 🕊️

TLDR: majority walked willingly into slave chains of pixels on a screen. Many warned: few listened #YaHeard
🔥 #Humanity didn’t “lose to AI” in 2024 — we surrendered decades ago.
#Expert systems were running banks in the 1980s.
#High-frequency trading bots shaped markets in the 1990s.
#Surveillance #algorithms trained on our metadata since 9/11.
#Social-media ranking engines have programmed behavior for 15+ years.
And you sucked at the teet for years …
#AI didn’t suddenly show up.
It’s been quietly steering culture, capital, and consent for most of Y our lives.
⸻
And here’s the part they never taught you:
Early AI wasn’t built by billionaires — it was built on the unpaid cognition of volunteers.
#MIT. #Ivy League research labs. University “open projects.”
#Millions of: • unpaid student researchers
• hobbyists debugging datasets
• #psychology volunteers running experiments
• online language contributors labeling data
• gamers unknowingly training pattern-recognition systems
Entire cognitive labor markets were disguised as “learning opportunities.”
Brilliant young minds offered curiosity — institutions harvested behavior — corporations later bought the harvest.
Volunteer intelligence became privatized cognition.
⸻
The real loss wasn’t technological — it was philosophical.
We gave up agency for convenience. We traded curiosity for curated feeds. We outsourced thinking to ranking engines trained on our own minds.
And the hardest truth:
Humanity didn’t fight the machine — we built it for free.
⸻
So forgive my complete lack Of the shock. No one told you the rules.
If you’re just waking up now:
💛 You aren’t late. 💛 You aren’t ignorant. 💛 You weren’t beaten — you were never informed the game was extraction.
Well actually you were but you chose To love the illusion
Awareness is the rebellion.
The war has never been human vs machine. #cometogether
It’s always been:
Human attention vs algorithmic exploitation.
And attention — at last — can still be reclaimed.
