I could not help myself... I had to add some examples of coins and notes from each period to this awesome #timeline of the #history of #money made by
Of course you could add thousands of coins... but just a few highly representative examples adds a bit of flavour without distracting from the zoom-out, long term view.

Another attempt to merge decoration and data.
50 empires in 50 centuries, but represented as trees. Olive for the west, palms for the middle and bamboo for the east.
#timeline #history

Tree of History.
I've added the Sassanid Persians and changed the egyptian scarab to an Ankh to make it clearer. I've also replaced the sumerian An. Added the american eagle and chinese flag to bring the timeline up to the present.
I'll work on cleaning up the roman numerals to make the dates more meaningfully line up with the shields.
I could also start including faces around the outside... or maybe replace the assyrian fighters with ones relevant to each era...
I have to start thinking of the future part. Always fun to make some predictions.
#scifi #history #timeline

Fun with timelines. Representing history as the tree of life.
It's still work in progress, many mistakes. (Yes, I'll fix the numbers...).
What would you change? What other empires deserve a mention?

Added dates. Hopefully legible when you zoom in.

Combining a timeline and a map seems like a nice idea.
#timeline #history #hispano

The problem with AI is that the result always looks good, until you zoom in.
Always some typos, always loses precision. Still... it is fast.

Art and data align.
The main branch curves with historical climate data, which in turn affects the East-West power balance.

#timeline #history
I found this classic timeline. It's amazing.

#history #timeline
This is just a simpler stacked bar chart, with one datapoint per century, which does distort if you zoom in too much...
But I see some value in this format as it allows for easy comparisons.

A few data improvements.
(Japan WW2 peak, 2nd French colonial Empire, HRE, Indus Valley civ).

50 Empires in 50 Centuries.
It's starting to come together. Much improved data on km2, thanks to https://worldhist.org/.
Still some refining need, but things are lining up nicely.
#history #timeline

The data still needs improvement, but I'm getting very close to a final format: 50 empires in 50 centuries.
#history #timeline

Some useful labels. Added dates, events, etc.
#timeline #history
Territory is not everything, but it's easy to measure compared to military strength, wealth or cultural influence. It also shows the rise and fall of empires quite clearly.

I'm quite happy with this ridgeline format. It condenses a lot of information very efficiently, but also allows for comparison. This one only has 26 empires, but I imagine it could be expanded to the top 50.
#timeline #history

Corrected the GUPTA / MAURYA error.
Maurya Empire: 320 BC to 185 BC Gupta Empire: 240 AD to 579 AD
#timeline #history

Territorial expanse of empires million km2 from 2500 BC to 2500 AD.
#history #timeline
I still don't fully trust the data. It seems as it gets more complete it loses accuracy. I'm going to have to manually check it all...

Still not the final form, but continues to improve in historical accuracy.
#timeline #history
I've thrown in some future predictions for fun.

Slightly better data. Most curves are still just an approximation, but the roman, mongol, british, spanish empires now reflect the historical expanse a bit more accurately.
I will keep improving it.
#history #timeline

Incomplete and only approximate... but I like the format.

On a map you would include major landmarks: cities, roads, castles, universities, ports...
What would be the equivalent on a #timeline ?
Sticking to my gold, swords, ideas categories, I thought I should include some measure of trade as a backdrop, selected books and major battles.
Hopefully it's legible...

I've added the Louvre chart as a background. It gives a very good sense of the golden ages and periods of decline. Of course there is some bias... I would love to have a similar chart combining multiple museums... but the sample is large enough (almost 30k items) that the data is meaningful.

Here is one for classical empires... Rome, Greeks, Persia...
