Bucket list dinner for Mother’s Day last night: cheese wheel pasta!
Since learning about this dish years and years ago, I’ve wanted to try it. A divot is carved in a wheel of Parmesan, doused in vodka, and lit on fire. Vodka and melting cheese form part of a sauce cooked in the cheese wheel, and pasta is tossed in this.
It’s kind of hard to find restaurants that do this, but we managed to discover they did it at Ciao Osteria, a great restaurant not far away. The only problem is they only do it rarely and REFUSE to tell you when 😂 I had noticed that they served it last year on Mother’s Day when I saw some of their social media posts after the fact, and called to find out if they were doing it this year. They said no… I decided to book a reservation anyway, because their other food is also great.
What a pleasant surprise — they DID do it for Mother’s Day this year! I managed to get the last one 😮
Their take on the dish is to do it as a pink vodka sauce with a whole lobster. This was also my first time eating a whole lobster, which was delicious and actually fun. I’m usually not the biggest fan of seafood but even as a kid, I always liked lobster.
It was a wonderful surprise, a great experience, and a delicious dish 😁 The recommended wine to accompany it, Cacciata Vermentino Toscana, was amazing, almost a dessert wine with grapefruit notes.
