Here’s the translation of your conversation into English:
When I posted a clip summarizing how to make Huai Phueng District accept Bitcoin payments:
“This is a good idea, but I still think using cryptocurrency for payments requires building a specific community for transactions and exchanges. If we still need to reference another currency, like the Thai Baht, for calculations, the high volatility might make it unsuitable and lead to profit or loss issues. This doesn’t even mention the need for education, understanding, and confidence in such currency. Also, the post references Bitcoin with a value of 1 to 2,300,000 Baht, which might feel too distant for residents here. Perhaps we should focus on something more tangible and feasible without wasting time. Personally, I’m still ‘holding’ Bitkub at around 200 Baht.”
Response:
“There is now a second layer of Bitcoin, allowing us to use smaller units. One Baht can get you 40 Satoshi (1 Bitcoin = 100,000,000 Satoshi). Wallet apps let you specify amounts directly in Baht.
My suggestion doesn’t even cover the acceptance channels yet, as that’s a minor point in introducing this idea. What I’m addressing are the risks, understanding, and purpose of implementing this change. Cryptocurrency undeniably involves investment. If there’s no intent to buy for profit, the need to exchange Baht for Bitcoin is practically zero. If the target audience we aim to educate becomes interested but lacks knowledge and has unchecked greed, they might face unnecessary losses. As for referencing 1 Bitcoin at 2,300,000 Baht, it was to highlight the vast difference in value. Recommending this to those without thorough knowledge could be highly risky, as it could wipe them out overnight. While I support this idea within the crypto community, it’s a difficult, high-risk concept for the general public here. This point might not be worth it.”
Response:
“I understand your concerns. I can’t educate everyone if they aren’t genuinely interested. Even if they were interested in speculation, I wouldn’t teach it because Bitcoin was designed as hard money. I’d only recommend saving gradually, like putting away 10 or 20 Baht after essential expenses.
What Huai Phueng intends is for businesses to receive Bitcoin from goods and services rather than investing. Just open up to receive payments; that’s it.”
Response:
“I disagree with the notion of Bitcoin’s stability. A couple of years ago, its value dropped from over 2 million Baht to around 900,000 Baht. If you think of it as saving in a piggy bank in Baht, the 10 Baht you put away might drop to 5 Baht overnight in crypto. And the idea of ‘no investment’ is incorrect since exchanging Baht for a highly volatile cryptocurrency is speculative investment. If you buy Bitcoin with 10 Baht and its value drops to 8 Baht, you wouldn’t be able to buy a snack worth 10 Baht. In the end, why would local businesses adopt such a risky currency over the more stable Baht?”
Response:
“Because other currencies can’t maintain value; even if they’re more stable, they suffer from inflation. Take the US Dollar, for instance; its value has fallen by 99% since the US government abandoned the gold standard. When money can’t retain its purchasing power, prices go up, and savers can never rest.”
Response:
“This reason doesn’t seem relevant to our current debate. In our country, goods are valued in Baht based on the dollar as an intermediary. We can’t separate Baht’s value from the economic system. That’s all I’ll argue on this.”
Response:
“I’d actually like to continue this discussion. Although there are risks in accepting Bitcoin, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Those ready to exchange Bitcoin for Baht for foreigners can charge reasonable transaction fees with a high level of privacy. Feel free to drop by the shop and chat. Thank you!”
