Consensus - Chapter 16

The Looming Split

The cabin sat beyond a narrow service road in second-growth forest that had been cut once, years ago, and then left to settle into its own uneven logic. Pines and firs crowded the slope in wind-shaped bands. Wet needles softened the ground. The last light had gone out of the sky, but the dark was not empty. Branches shifted overhead in uneven bursts. Water moved somewhere downhill over stone. Farther off, a coyote yipped once, then again—short, sharp bursts—the sound arriving broken by terrain and trees until it seemed to come from two directions at once.

Somewhere ahead, woodsmoke. Not a plume — the cabin was far too careful for that — only the smell of it, dragged downslope by the cold and thinned almost to nothing among the wet needles.

The damp got into everything within a hundred meters. Not rain, yet. Just air that had given up pretending to be dry.

Jonas stopped on the path to listen, and Ethan watched some of the tension go out of his shoulders. Nothing here offered a clean picture unless you earned it. His brother had spent a fortnight being photographed by strangers. He would like that.

They had not come direct from La Puerta. That had been Ethan’s idea, and nobody had argued with it.

The forest had been logged once, decades ago, and then left. Nobody had replanted it. It had simply come back — without ceremony, without supervision, at its own rate — and it was not finished coming back. The tree ages were wrong. The canopy had holes in it. It would take another lifetime to look like anything a person would call a forest, and it was already the most convincing thing Ethan had walked through in a year.

He filed that away without yet knowing why.

Anastasia had moved twice since Iceland — once to break the pattern, once, she said, to find somewhere with enough bandwidth and enough trees that neither problem would announce itself. Magnus had named the place on their last night in the safehouse: written on nothing, spoken once. A relay cooperative had built it some years ago, and Magnus had had a hand in that cooperative dissolving. The ownership trail, he said, ended nowhere useful — and he said it the way other men said you’re welcome.

She had told Magnus she felt relatively safe here.

Ethan noticed that she had not said it to him.

By the time they reached the cabin, the woods had already decided what kind of people they were willing to ignore.

That was one of the advantages of obscurity. Not safety. Just irregular attention.

The building itself looked like nothing worth finding: a weathered service cabin with a reinforced crawlspace, old utility lines, and just enough shielded hardware hidden behind plain walls to make the surrounding quiet feel deliberate.

Anastasia opened the steel door only after the exterior camera had studied them long enough to seem offended.

“You made it.”

Jonas stepped past Ethan into the room and looked around once.

Banks of monitors. Cooling fans. Wire bundles. Three live relay maps. One cot pushed against the wall as if sleep itself were a provisional protocol. Functional, anonymous, ugly in the disciplined way only coder spaces ever were.

And in the corner, absurd among all of it, a cast-iron woodstove with its door cracked open on a low orange line.

The room was cold anyway. Cold the way a building gets when it has spent far longer being cold than being heated, and has come to prefer it.

“Cozy.”

Anastasia ignored that and locked the door behind them.

The Magnus case sat open on the central worktable, its projector dark and its emitter warm. Ethan looked at it half a second longer than necessary.

“Umbra?”

“Low duty cycle. Since the day I arrived.” Anastasia did not look up. “It clamps the cabin’s own emissions. A building full of protocol research should leak no more radio into the trees than a building full of nothing.”

“And Magnus?”

“Asleep, and furious about it. He says I am using his miracle as a thermostat.”

It fooled the dumb layer. It had never once pretended to fool anything else, and neither had Magnus — which was the entire reason they were standing in a forest instead of a city.

She had brought him. Of course she had.

Anastasia turned from the case and looked at Ethan’s left forearm, which he had not mentioned.

“Show me.”

“It’s fine.”

“That is not a diagnosis. That is a mood.”

He rolled the sleeve. The bruise had completed its whole ugly parade of colours and come out the far side into something yellow and unimpressive. She took a kit down from a shelf he had not yet looked at properly, turned the arm once under the lamp, pressed it twice in places he would not have chosen, and let go.

“Full extension.”

He gave her full extension.

“Good.” She was already putting the kit away. “Two centimeters higher and you would have been the sort of miner who tells a story about his wrist for thirty years.”

“I still might.”

“You will,” Anastasia said. “But it will be a lie by then, which is the correct way to tell that story.”

Ethan rolled the sleeve back down and said nothing, and was almost — almost — quick enough to stop himself noticing how practiced her hands were, and how little that had to do with him.

Anastasia keyed the wake sequence and the projection rose in pale blue over the clutter.

“Well,” Magnus said, looking from face to face. “A full house. That generally means either progress or bad timing.”

“Both.”

Anastasia did not sit. She stood beside the main terminal with one hand resting on the table edge and the other holding Sierra’s message open on the screen. Ethan recognized it at once from the header shell.

Mars.

Jonas saw it too.

“So she reached you as well,” he said.

“Yes.”

“And?”

“And it is a real offer,” Anastasia said. “And a dangerous one. Which is why we should talk before anyone decides that movement is the same thing as strategy.”

Ethan leaned back against the wall.

“That sounds aimed at me.”

“All of us.”

Jonas moved closer to the screen and read the message in silence. Sierra had kept it plain. Mars could offer distance, cover, room. Not safety. A future, if they were prepared to help build it.

He exhaled once through his nose.

“She doesn’t waste words,” he said.

“No. She doesn’t.”

Ethan read it again from the top.

Mars could offer distance, cover, room. Not safety. A future, if they were prepared to help build it.

Plain enough. Organizational language. The kind of offer people wrote when they had learned not to oversell necessity.

Then the last line.

You think well under pressure. That is rarer than brilliance and, at the moment, more useful.

He read it twice.

Not because it was flattering. He was suspicious of flattery and reasonably good at recognizing it. This was something else — the specific observation of someone who had watched the Iceland footage and seen past the noise to the thing that actually happened. Most people who had seen it commented on the operators, the steam, the improbability of the terrain. Sierra Nkosi had watched him.

He set the message down without remarking on it.

But he did not entirely set it down.

Magnus folded his arms.

“It is a good offer,” he said. “Mars is the one place where Earth’s present sequence no longer passes for inevitability.”

Anastasia turned toward him.

“I’m not going.”

The room held still.

Ethan straightened. Jonas looked up. Magnus, for once, did not interrupt immediately.

At last Ethan: “What?”

Anastasia set Sierra’s message aside and faced them all directly.

“The colonies are right about the problem,” she said. “They are not wrong about the geometry, the exclusion, or the pressure that follows from pretending a near-Earth cadence is morally neutral. But cadence reform is not the answer. Not by itself. Not now.”

Jonas frowned.

“You mean blocktime.”

“Yes.”

Jonas folded his arms. “They’re not wrong to want it. Stretch the interval far enough and propagation matters less.”

“That is the obvious answer. Which is not the same as a good one.”

Ethan frowned. “It would reduce forks.”

“Yes,” she said. “And it would reduce the visibility of disagreement. That is not the same as solving it.”

She moved to the side monitor, brought up a relay model, and drew two clean arcs through it with her finger.

“You make the blocks slow enough, and the network looks synchronized again. Everyone has more time to see roughly the same thing before the next one lands. Politically, that is very attractive. Technically, it is a retreat.”

Jonas tilted his head. “Because?”

“Because mempools do not become shared just because you wait longer,” Anastasia said. “Transaction visibility remains regional. Fee pressure remains regional. Information remains uneven. You do not eliminate divergence. You lower the frequency at which it becomes undeniable.”

No one interrupted.

Ethan had stopped looking at the model.

He was looking instead at the wall behind it, and at the things he had walked past on the way in without seeing properly.

Crates. Not a few — a wall of them, stacked and labeled in her small square hand. Rice, oats, lentils, salt. Vacuum bricks of coffee, which told him something about her he had not previously had evidence for. Water in twenty-liter drums, and a filter rig plumbed off the roof catchment, because on this coast the sky did most of the work if you simply let it. Fuel canisters. Spare cells. A second cot, still in its packaging, which he decided not to think about.

And a medical case, open on a shelf, sorted.

The same case she had taken down for his arm an hour ago. He had let her do it without once asking himself why a woman living alone in a forest kept a kit like that within reach of the door.

Because it was not a first-aid kit. Sutures. Sealed antibiotics in more than one class. A splint, a tourniquet, blood-stopping agents — the things a person buys once they have accepted that if something goes wrong out here, the only pair of hands available will be their own, and one of them may not be working.

Behind the stove, split wood was stacked to the roofline. A second rack stood apart from it, newer, rawer, the cut faces still pale.

Drying.

That wood would not be fit to burn for months.

She was burning damp rounds tonight so that the dry stack would still be there in winter.

Ethan did the arithmetic without wanting to. Not weeks. Not a season.

She had provisioned for a year. She had done it alone. And she had finished doing it before any of them arrived to be told about it.

Jonas had called the place cozy. Jonas had been looking at the monitors.

“And the cost is enormous,” she went on. “You slow the system down to the speed of distance. You turn Bitcoin into something that clears on the timescale of light-minutes instead of human activity. That may be tolerable for settlement. It is fatal for everything else.”

Ethan watched the model. “So it’s a mitigation.”

“It’s surrender dressed as fairness,” Anastasia said. “You do not solve the problem. You make the chain less alive so the universe can keep up.”

Then, more quietly: “I am not willing to call that success.”

The rain arrived on the roof while she said it. Not a downpour — just the steady, unhurried application of water to wood that this coast performed for eight months of the year. Nobody in the room so much as glanced up. It had been doing that before they came and would be doing it long after.

Anastasia crossed to the stove, opened the door with her boot, and fed it one more split round without breaking the thread of what she was saying. The wood was damp. It caught the way damp wood catches — no flare, no drama, just a dull orange working its way inward, taking its time about it.

Ethan watched it take.

In Iceland, heat came up out of the ground under pressure, and you spent your working life persuading it not to kill you. Here you had to earn heat. Slowly. From something that had spent forty years growing before anyone could cut it, split it, stack it, dry it, and finally burn it.

He was beginning to understand why she had chosen this place, and it had very little to do with bandwidth.

Ethan looked at her for a moment longer.

“You’re saying a longer blocktime won’t solve it?”

“No,” Anastasia said. “I’m saying it solves one class of problem by detonating three others. It is too divisive at this stage. Too easy to frame as colonial impatience or civilizational vandalism. Push that fight now and you split the chain before you open the frontier.”

Magnus watched her intently.

“You moved.”

“Yes,” Anastasia said. “Jonas’s article made it impossible not to.”

Jonas gave her a dry look. “Nice to know my professional ruin remains useful.”

“It does,” she said. “Try not to become sentimental about it.”

He accepted that.

Ethan crossed his arms.

“Then what’s the plan?” he asked.

Anastasia looked toward the unfinished draft window on the side monitor—the one she had left open and untouched since the Iceland safehouse.

“Honestly, I don't know. But I stay,” she said. “I work on something better. A new BIP. Not one that simply makes the chain slower and mistakes delayed disagreement for fairness.

Jonas shook his head once.

“That sounds impossible.”

“It may be,” Anastasia said. “That does not make the alternatives less dangerous.”

She looked at the dark side monitor for a moment longer.

“I don’t know the shape of it yet,” she said. “But there is one line of inquiry I left behind too quickly.”

That got everyone’s attention.

“Because it failed?” Ethan asked.

“No,” Anastasia said. “Because the results were too consistent to dismiss and too strange to explain with the tools I had.”

Magnus said nothing.

Jonas rubbed at his forehead.

“That sounds encouraging, if rather mysterious.”

“It should,” Anastasia said. “I told myself I would come back to it when I had a better framework. At the time that felt like discipline. Now it looks more like delay with better branding.”

Ethan looked from her to Magnus, then back.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

“You’re staying on Earth while Vega is actively narrowing the noose around anyone connected to this.”

“Yes.”

“That seems bad.”

“It is bad,” Anastasia said. “But it’s still the right move.”

The stove ticked as it warmed. Outside, the rain went on doing what rain does — which is, mostly, nothing anyone can point to, for a very long time, until one morning the hill is a different shape.

Magnus’s expression shifted—not quite pride, not quite regret, some harder admixture of the two.

“You’re thinking like a Bitcoiner,” he said quietly. “Not just about code. About what people will accept, what they will reject, and what the chain can survive in one piece.”

Anastasia looked at him levelly.

“That sounds dangerously close to praise.

“It is diagnosis.”

Jonas rubbed at his forehead.

“So let me summarize the mood in the room. Sierra is offering refuge on Mars. The radicals want blocktime reform large enough to make distance politically normal. Vega wants the whole discussion shoved back into a technical closet. And you”—he looked at Anastasia—“want to invent a third path before any of them succeed in making the others impossible.”

“Yes.”

“Fine.” Jonas exhaled. “Then I’m going to Mars.”

Anastasia blinked. “You decided that quickly.”

“No,” Jonas said. “I decided it the moment the article posted and three separate people on the Pear suddenly remembered I had a body in addition to a byline. I am not useful to you if I remain in the center pretending observation still buys protection. Sierra is right about one thing: distance buys room. I’d like some.”

Magnus nodded slowly.

“Practical.”

“Try not to sound surprised,” Jonas said.

All eyes turned to Ethan.

He did not make them wait long.

“I’m going too.”

Anastasia raised one eyebrow.

“You?”

“Yes, me.” He pushed off the wall and came forward a step. “I’ve been playing defense in Iceland while other people turned my data into politics, articles, attacks, and theories about history. I’m done reacting. If the real pressure line runs through the colonies now, then that’s where I need to be.”

Jonas glanced sideways at him.

“And I thought you just liked underbuilt places with bad weather.”

“I do,” Ethan said. “That’s a bonus.”

The corner of Anastasia’s mouth almost moved.

Then she sobered.

“Mars won’t be safer.”

“I know.”

“It will only be farther from Vega’s cleanest reach.”

“That’s still an improvement,” Ethan said.

Sierra’s message remained open on the side screen, waiting like an offer from a future no one in the room trusted enough yet.

Magnus looked at all three of them in turn.

“This is not the end of one fight,” he said. “It is the beginning of several. Earth and Mars. Legitimacy and pressure. Reform and fracture. Do not romanticize any of it.”

“No one here is romanticizing anything,” Anastasia said.

“That,” Magnus said, “is the first reassuring sentence I’ve heard in hours.”

Jonas leaned over the worktable and looked at the unfinished draft window beside Anastasia’s relays.

“What are you calling it?” he asked.

She followed his gaze.

“I’m not naming it yet.”

“Wise,” he said. “The last time we named something too early, the whole solar system started arguing.”

Ethan glanced at the Mars message again.

“How soon can Sierra move us?” he asked.

Anastasia tapped the reply field open, then stopped.

Her fingers hovered over the keys.

For a moment no one spoke.

Then she typed, slowly and without ornament.

Jonas and Ethan are coming.

I am staying.

The current cadence fight is too blunt and too early. I’m working another path.

If Mars still wants them, move quickly.

She looked at Ethan.

“You’re sure?”

He nodded.

Then at Jonas.

He gave a tired little shrug.

“I’ve had worse career pivots.”

Anastasia sent the message.

That was that.

The room changed around the decision almost immediately — not the walls or the light, but the weight of what each of them was now committed to. Three futures had narrowed to two, and with the sending, become real.

Ethan felt it settle in his chest: not relief exactly, but the particular stillness that follows an irreversible decision.

Anastasia walked them to the door.

Not because they were leaving that second. Because the movement itself made the split feel official.

At the threshold she stopped.

“I’ll send what I can,” Ethan said. “Cells. Filters. Whatever the route pack will carry.”

“Send nothing.” There was no heat in it. “A cabin that takes deliveries is a cabin that exists.”

“You have rice and antibiotics and a stove.”

“I have a year,” Anastasia said. “That is considerably more than most people are ever given to plan with.”

She let that stand.

“I’ll send updates when I can,” she said. “And when I can’t, assume I’m still working.”

Jonas nodded.

“Comforting in your own peculiar way.”

She ignored that and looked at Ethan.

“Try not to get recruited into someone else’s mythology just because Mars is farther away.”

Ethan almost smiled.

“No promises.”

That got him as close to affection as Anastasia was likely to demonstrate in one evening.

Then, more quietly, so that only he heard it:

“One more thing. Whoever shaped those delays understood propagation fairness the way I understand it. They read the same topology. They chose the same three points I would have chosen, in the same order, to prove that it mattered.”

“I am not telling you not to go,” Anastasia said. “I am telling you that the woman offering you a future is not a bystander to the thing that ruined your year.”

Ethan thought about that for roughly as long as it deserved.

“Then I’ll ask her.”

Anastasia blinked. It was, he thought, the first time he had ever managed to surprise her.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.” He shouldered the case. “I’m not going to spend a year assembling a theory about somebody I can simply talk to. If she did it, she’ll say so — people like that always do, they’re proud of the work. And if she says so, I’ll decide then.”

“And if you don’t like the answer?”

“Then I won’t like it,” Ethan said. “I’ve disliked a great many true things. It hasn’t killed me yet.” He looked at her, and something in his face went gentler. “What I’m not going to do is cross sixty million kilometers in order to be clever at her.”

Anastasia studied him for a long moment.

“No,” she said at last. “I don’t suppose you would.”

When she turned to Magnus, the air shifted again.

“Keep them useful.”

Magnus gave a single solemn nod.

“I will try to be as intolerable as conditions require.”

“Then nothing has changed,” she said.

The door opened.

Cold wet air came in around the edges, carrying rain and the smell of woodsmoke pressed flat by the damp.

For a moment the four of them stood in the threshold of the next phase without yet crossing it.

Then Ethan lifted the Magnus case, Jonas adjusted the collar of his coat as if preparing for one more bad decision in a life increasingly structured by them, and Anastasia stepped back into the room where blue light and firelight argued quietly over her unfinished answer.

Behind her the stove was still going.

It would still be going in the morning. And the morning after that. And she would still be the one feeding it.

That, Ethan understood at last, was the whole of her argument, and she had never once needed to say it out loud.

When the door sealed between them, it sounded less like separation than divergence.

Somewhere beyond Earth, Mars waited.

Somewhere beneath all of it, for now, Bitcoin remained one chain.

For now was doing a lot of work.
