Consensus - Chapter 10

No Comm for This

Anastasia was waiting by the low windbreak above the geothermal field as if she had been there longer than the snow.

Ethan saw her only when he was almost level with the wind-scoured barrier.

One moment the path ahead was empty: low industrial light, drifting steam, a thin crust of snow along the basalt edge. The next she had detached herself from the white movement of vapor and become a person again—still, pale-faced, one hand in the pocket of a dark coat, the other resting lightly on the windbreak behind her.

He stopped hard enough to feel the Magnus case swing against his leg.

“Anastasia?”

His voice came out sharper than he intended. Tired, accusatory, relieved.

She pushed herself off the wall.

Snow and grit shifted softly under her boots as she stepped into the low light. She looked older than the memory he had carried and younger than someone living as quietly as she did had any right to look. The years had not softened her. They had refined her. Her face held the same reserve he remembered from family gatherings long ago, but the reserve no longer read as distance.

“Privacy matters,” she said. “Especially now.”

Ethan glanced once along the open path behind him. Steam drifted. No movement.

He looked back at her. “So you just appear in the middle of nowhere and call that privacy?”

“For certain categories of conversation, yes.”

The answer was so perfectly Anastasia that he almost laughed.

The Magnus case gave a faint internal buzz at Ethan’s side, but no voice. Good. For once the old man appeared to understand timing.

Cold air moved across the open field. Somewhere below, a pressure line vented with a low, steady hiss.

Ethan took a breath.

“All right,” he said. “You’re here. That means either you care or you’re bored.”

Anastasia’s mouth moved by the smallest degree.

“I took a risk coming here,” she said. “So let’s not waste it.”

Ethan nodded and set the Magnus case down on the low wall and opened his tablet instead of reaching for rhetoric.

“There’s an anomaly in the propagation layer,” he said. “Small. Selective. Clean enough that it keeps wanting to pass for noise. I caught it because for one minute it left a valid block of mine sitting somewhere nobody could see it. Nobody took it. Somebody could have.”

Her eyes sharpened immediately.

“Show me.”

He handed her the tablet.

She did not glance at him again while she read. Snow gathered faintly on the shoulder of her coat. Low field light touched the side of her face without warming it. Ethan watched the speed of her attention instead. That had always been the unsettling thing about Anastasia. She did not merely read. She seemed to sort what mattered before other people had even finished perceiving it.

After a minute she flicked to the second cluster, then the third.

“Where did you get the historical baselines?” she asked.

“Some are mine. Some are Magnus’s.”

That earned him the briefest look.

“He still manages to be inconvenient.”

“You have no idea.”

“I probably do.”

She went back to the tablet.

Another minute passed.

Then she handed it back.

“It’s real.”

Ethan did not realize until then how tightly he had been holding his shoulders.

“You’re sure?”

“No,” she said. “I’m careful. But I am sure it is not random in the casual sense — the sense people use to protect themselves from what follows.” She looked past him into the steam. “The shaping is too selective. Too willing to stay just below spectacle.”

Ethan let out a breath.

“Good.”

Anastasia looked at him.

“That is not usually the word people choose there.”

“I know. But if it’s real, I stop wondering whether I’m sleep-deprived and stupid.”

“Useful distinction.”

They stood in silence for a second, snow falling lightly through the low field light.

At last: “Jonas?”

“I met him on the Pear. He took it seriously.”

“Took it seriously and stayed quiet are not the same thing.”

“Exactly.” Ethan rubbed at the back of his neck. “Magnus thinks he’s working. I think Vega got to him, or close enough.”

That shifted something in her expression.

“Vega noticed?”

“Jonas thought so. He told me to move fast.”

Anastasia nodded once, more to herself than to him.

“That fits.”

“Fits what?”

She folded her arms against the cold.

“The timing.”

Ethan frowned. “The timing of what?”

Anastasia looked at him for a moment as if deciding whether he was ready for an answer larger than the question.

Then she gave it to him anyway.

“The colonies are pushing,” she said. “Not openly. Not with a flag and an anthem and all the other childish things people imagine when they say rebellion. But they are pushing. Some through protocol argument. Some through relay pressure. Some through the simple fact of existing at a distance the current chain was never designed to treat fairly.”

Ethan looked down at the case on the wall, then back at her.

“You think they’re behind it.”

“I think they have motive,” she said. “I think they have technical people capable of understanding the leverage. I think Earth has spent long enough treating present network geometry as if it were a moral achievement that pressure of some kind became inevitable.”

“That’s a very careful answer.”

“It’s the only kind worth giving without proof.”

A gust cut across the field, dragging steam sideways. Snow hissed softly across the basalt.

Ethan zipped his coat higher.

“All right,” he said. “Then give me the less careful version.”

Anastasia’s eyes stayed on him.

“The less careful version,” she said, “is that Bitcoin stabilized civilization at one scale and may now be constraining it at another.”

That landed harder than he expected.

He had thought some version of it already, standing in the Icelandic dark with Magnus behind him and Mars somewhere beyond the conversation. But hearing it spoken cleanly by someone else made it feel less like private unease and more like structure.

Anastasia went on.

“At ten minutes, near-Earth space still gets to call itself normal. Mars gets partial dignity when geometry is kind and procedural dependence when it isn’t. Beyond Mars, the outer system is still mostly a rhetorical future because the chain’s cadence keeps turning distance into hierarchy.”

Ethan looked at the snow rather than at her.

“That sounds like an argument for changing Bitcoin.”

“It is an argument for admitting that history did not stop when the system became successful.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“No. It isn’t.”

He could hear the caution in her now, but also the pull beneath it.

“You’re already in this.”

Anastasia did not answer immediately.

When she did, her voice had gone flatter.

“Yes.”

The word hung between them.

Ethan waited.

At last she said, “There is a proposal moving through review under the name Nari.”

He gave her a look.

She lifted one eyebrow.

“You knew?”

“I suspected,” he said. “Magnus was too pleased with himself every time he mentioned Nari’s work for it not to be family.”

“Annoying man.”

“Deeply.”

That got them as close to shared amusement as they had been for a while.

Anastasia looked down the path once, checking angles, shadows, maybe exits.

“It is not a blocktime change,” she said. “Not yet. It is smaller than that. A relay-layer intervention. A way of making present asymmetries harder to sanctify.”

Ethan frowned. “And you think that’s enough?”

“No.”

The answer came fast.

Not defensive. Exact.

“It is necessary. That is different.”

He studied her face. For the first time that night, she looked tired rather than merely controlled.

“What do you actually want?” he asked.

Anastasia turned back to him fully.

“For now? Your data. Your discretion. And your willingness not to panic into public language before the pattern is strong enough to survive public handling.”

“That last one sounds aimed at Jonas.”

“It is aimed at everyone.”

Fair.

Ethan picked up the Magnus case from the wall and set it more squarely between them.

“There’s one more thing.”

Anastasia’s gaze dropped to the steel shell.

“I assumed.”

“You assumed what?”

“That you weren’t carrying an obsolete field pack through volcanic Iceland for aesthetic reasons.”

Ethan nodded once, opened the case, and keyed the wake sequence.

The hologram rose in pale blue scaffolding, failed once, then resolved into Magnus Einarsson with his arms folded and his expression already halfway to judgment.

“Well,” he said, looking from one to the other. “At least neither of you wasted the opening by pretending this was a social call.”

Anastasia closed her eyes briefly.

“Of course you’re portable.”

“Prepared,” Magnus said. “The word is prepared.”

“It’s grotesque.”

“And yet so useful.”

She gave him a level look that would have cut a weaker projection in half.

Magnus, to his credit, did not flinch.

“Your relay proposal is sound in structure,” he said. “Underpowered in politics, but structurally sound.”

Anastasia’s gaze flicked to the projection.

“You were not supposed to know Nari was mine.”

“The network was not supposed to know,” Magnus said. “I am not the network. I knew how you thought before you had a handle to think behind it. Nari argues the way you argued at fourteen—the same distrust of borrowed symmetry, the same refusal to let a clean sentence outrun its proof.” The projection tilted its head. “A pseudonym hides you from strangers. I was never a stranger.”

Anastasia held his gaze a moment, then looked away.

“No,” she said. “You were something worse.”

Ethan glanced between them.

“You’ve been talking?”

“Not directly.”

“Not enough,” Magnus said at the same time.

Then, after a beat, they both looked annoyed for different reasons.

That was somehow reassuring.

Ethan folded his arms against the cold.

“All right,” he said. “Let me ask the stupid question so the rest of you can feel superior. If the colonies are applying pressure and Vega is already managing tone, what happens next?”

Anastasia answered first.

“Escalation through interpretation.”

Magnus said, “And possibly through force, if the wrong people conclude they are running out of narrative options.”

Ethan looked at him sharply. “You think she’d do that?”

Magnus’s face hardened.

“I think long peace makes dangerous people sentimental about their own necessity. They begin by calling it ‘stewardship’. Then they call coercion ‘maturity’.”

Anastasia said nothing, which was answer enough.

The snow thickened slightly. Somewhere below, a crawler engine shifted tone and faded into the wind.

Ethan felt, suddenly and clearly, that he had crossed a line. The anomaly was no longer just his. It belonged now to an argument already underway between worlds, and to people far more prepared than he was to use it.

That should have made him want to back out.

Instead it clarified him.

“How can I help?” he asked.

Anastasia’s expression changed by almost nothing, but the almost nothing mattered.

“For now,” she said, “your data and your discretion. Maybe later your name. Maybe later more than that. But if Vega gets wind of this meeting too early, it closes before it opens.”

Ethan nodded.

“You’ve got both.”

Anastasia glanced once toward the open field, mapping approaches and exits in the drifting steam.

“Good,” she said. “Then we move ... deliberately.”

She stepped back from the light.

“Anastasia—” Ethan started.

She paused.

He had not known, until that second, what he meant to say. An apology, perhaps. Or something about family. Or simply that he was glad she had come in person.

None of it seemed strong enough to survive the cold.

So he chose the truest thing available.

“Be careful.”

That got him a real look at last.

“You too.”

Then she stepped back into the steam.

She did not go far. There was nowhere to go. The guest berth module sat sixty meters up the slope, dark except for its standby strip, and neither of them had any appetite for putting her back across open ground before daylight. Ethan watched her cross to it. Watched the door take her. Watched the standby strip go out.

Then he was alone with the field and the case.

Magnus’s projection remained a moment longer, watching the place where she had disappeared.

Then he turned to Ethan.

“Well,” he said. “That could have gone worse.”

Ethan let out a breath that fogged hard in the low field light.

“That is your idea of encouragement?”

“It is my idea of accuracy.”

Ethan closed the case.

The field seemed smaller now. Not safer. Just smaller, as if the conversation had altered its scale.

Above the field, the night held its own counsel.

Ethan started back down the path with the Magnus case in one hand and Anastasia’s caution in his head.

For the first time since the anomaly appeared on his screens in Iceland, he no longer felt alone with it.

That was not comfort.

But it was enough.
