Plebs vs. Zombies just turned one year old last week. 🎈🧟 🎂

Started as a weekend project to find the dead follows quietly rotting in your list, it’s grown since: hunting, scouting, backups, a resurrector for accounts unintentionally (or intentionally) flagged as deleted. It was also starting to show its age, so it needed a facelift. New look top to bottom, smoother remote signer support, and a pile of bugs stomped under the hood.

Reminder, because the branding makes it easy to forget: this is not a game. You’re pointing a signer at your real keys and pruning your actual social graph. A lurker who never posts is not a zombie, and a false positive is sometimes possible if relays don’t cooperate. Read before you purge. Grant immunity to your favorite follows. Always make backups first.

New in Plebs vs. Zombies v0.9: Relay-Only Follow List Recovery 🛟

Misbehaving client overwrites are the most common way your follow graph gets nuked. Plebs vs. Zombies now scans your relays (plus a broad archival set) for older versions of your follow list and lets you republish a previous one, even if you’ve never backed up your list before. It’s like magic! 🎩🪄✨

As always, we tested this on our own accounts first. Sign in and head over to the Backups tab to get started.

At long last…

Plebs vs. Zombies v0.8 is now testing NIP-46 remote signing! 💥

This has been a long journey to get working. There are still some limitations you should be aware of. If you have a massive follow list, over 900 follows, there's no guarantee the app will be able to sign events for you. This is a protocol limitation: NIP-44 encryption has a hard limit of 64KB, and there's no way around that. If you have a shit ton of zombies to purge, you’ll need to use a browser extension or sign in with your private key instead (which we now also offer as a last resort, stored locally in your browser and never shared).

The good news is, even when signed in with a remote signer, you can still back up your follows. We now handle compression and chunking to store them on your relays for you. You just won’t be able to purge follows directly through the remote signer if your follow list is too large.
