In 1911 the #MonaLisa vanished from the Louvre.
Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian who had once worked at the museum, walked in on a closed Monday, took her off the wall and walked out.
For two years she was hidden in a trunk in his #Paris apartment. Newspapers around the world ran the story, and people queued just to stare at the empty wall.
In December 1913 he tried to sell her in Florence and was arrested. She came home to Paris more famous than ever.
