Three masters. Three faces. One vote.
A: Albrecht Dürer, 1500. At 28 he painted himself face on, in a pose borrowed from icons of Christ. Alte Pinakothek, Munich.
B: Rembrandt, about 1665. Around 60, after losing most of his fortune, he shows himself at work with brushes and palette. Kenwood House, London.
C: Vincent van Gogh, September 1889. Painted in the asylum at Saint Rémy. Calm face, restless swirls. Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
The twist: Van Gogh wrote to Theo that it is not easy to paint yourself, and that Rembrandt's portraits were more like a revelation.
