Rustypuppy

Sketch from a local cafe.

I usually don’t draw people, but he was right there at the next table on his own reading, so he didn’t move a lot which was really helpful. 😅

It was also interesting to draw the same thing multiple times and play with abstraction and size on the last two iterations.

Sketching the accessible bathroom of our hotel room.

5⭐️ for the shower bench, wall bar, and ability to use a hand-held shower head.

3.5⭐️ for the law-defined 17” toilet (regular is 15”) because it’s not high enough for my mom at 84 years old and definitely not high enough-post hip replacement surgery.

5⭐️ for Amazon Canada for delivering a toilet cushion* riser seat the day Mom was discharged from the surgical center.

• use the search term “cushion” if you need a toilet rise that uses straps/suction cups/etc to attach to the toilet seat vs. something that replaces the toilet seat and has to bolt onto the toilet with hardware.

Trying something new, along the lines of the Pottery Paradox from the book, Art & Fear.

A 500 sheet ream of copy paper will be my sketchpad for the year. Not intentionally trying to use all of them. It’s just practice, and somehow easier to tackle than a bound sketchbook.

Travel sketches from my recent trip. At least the beginning of it, because once the convention started, I stopped sketching and started writing in my journal. 😬

Many thanks to

for the inspo to finally try something I’d been thinking about for years.

Faber-Castell Artist Pitt pens and Crayola Pip Squeak marker.

A Sketch of a Tree in about an hour.

Same teacher, different webinar, than last time. This webinar is earlier than the first one I watched, and I prefer the later one; he had the process more refined and didn’t bother with a reference photo.

With a reference photo, I felt my tree didn’t turn out as well as the first one I drew without the reference photo, because even though the “from my imagination tree” didn’t really turnout as I imagined it, I liked it because there wasn’t anything concrete to compare it to - my “imagination tree” updated to match the sketch, while my reference tree just sat there not looking as much like the reference photo as it “should have” …. Which , unless the point of the exercise is to precisely copy the photo, doesn’t matter.

Definitely something to play with as I keep wandering along my sketching journey. 🖊️

Picked up this book at the library: How to Draw Without Talent by Danny Gregory. The Sketchbook Skool logo felt familiar, but it wasn’t until I was a few pages in that when he said he was Koosje Koene’s partner that I got it - I have her book on sketching.

I’ll try pretty much any book on drawing/sketching because reading and practicing the same thing presented differently often helps it click better for me.

This book has fun, quick exercises.

The second and third photos was to make marks while listening to different songs- which I found very helpful. The whole ‘make marks’ thing has always confused me. Probably because I keep wanting the marks to look like some specific thing. Playing with the pen over the paper became secondary to enjoying the song, so much more fun.

Here are links to the songs…
