⚡

Bitcoin didn’t come out of nowhere.

Peer-to-peer networking, hash functions, Merkle trees, public-key cryptography, timestamps and proof of work. That’s decades of research brought together in one protocol, alongside the halving and the difficulty adjustment.

And these are only some of the mechanisms that make Bitcoin work.

A clip from our workshop on the technical side of Bitcoin. 📚

⚡

Your house didn’t get more expensive. Your money got weaker. 🏠

The bricks are the same. Each euro just buys less.

Bitcoin is money no one can print at will.

Thank you, Paystand.

Associação FREE Madeira is a small non-profit with a big mission: making good Bitcoin and economic education available to everyone in Madeira, and beyond, in Portuguese. Donations like Paystand’s are what help make that mission possible. They are, quite simply, how we keep going and expanding.

Because of this support:

• Portuguese people of every age can keep joining our workshops, from their first questions to taking real responsibility for their own scarce savings.
- Our monthly meetups stay open, giving locals and newcomers a place to learn together and a community to belong to.
- The 160+ local businesses that accept Bitcoin. We provide them with educational flyers, guides in Portuguese, and in-person support whenever they need it.

These are real people benefiting: a retiree asking her first question, a café owner taking his first Lightning payment, a room of neighbours who didn’t know each other a year ago. That is what this donation keeps alive.

To the Paystand team: thank you for believing in this work.

To any organisation that would like to stand with us, we’d be glad to talk: [email protected]

⚡

Why does money exist?

In a barter economy, 6 goods mean knowing 15 exchange rates. With 500 goods, it’s almost 125,000. And each person still has to want exactly what the other one has.

Money solves both: a single good everyone accepts in exchange for everything else.

A clip from our intro-to-money workshop. 📚

⚡️ Projeto There’s no second best (flexible load)

⚡️ Project There’s no second best (flexible load)

Over the past two decades, the global focus on renewable energy has made power grids more expensive and less resilient due to the intermittent nature of wind and solar generation.

Events such as the 2021 Texas blackout and the 2025 Spain blackout have demonstrated these weaknesses, with severe economic consequences and loss of life.

At the same time, new demand-side pressures such as AI inference loads introduce additional challenges. This talk explores these events and examines how integrating Bitcoin mining, both FOTM (front of the meter) and BTM (behind the meter), can help stabilise power grids.

With relatively low CAPEX (capital expenditure), rapid deployment, and the ability to relocate, Bitcoin mining stands out as the most effective flexible load available.

Creating an “Antifragile” Energy Infrastructure with Bitcoin Mining

⚡️ Project

Creating an “Antifragile” Energy Infrastructure with Bitcoin Mining

Kenji Tateiwa will speak on how Bitcoin mining is key to building an antifragile energy infrastructure.

As the use of variable renewable energy increases, power grids face rising curtailment, congestion, and instability. Traditional solutions are often slow and capital-intensive.

Bitcoin mining, by contrast, is one of the most flexible loads ever created, time-agnostic, location-agnostic, instantly interruptible, and modular from kW to MW to GW.

Through its MegaWatt to MegaHash (MW2MH) model, Agile Energy X demonstrates how mining can monetize stranded power, relieve grid congestion, stabilize frequency, and accelerate renewable deployment.
