** The Biggest Attack on You That You’ve Never Heard Of **
Most people have never heard of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.
Yet a small group of central bankers and financial regulators headquartered out of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland, effectively decides what assets banks around the world are encouraged—or discouraged—from holding.
And when it comes to Bitcoin, their message is clear.
The Basel Committee assigned Bitcoin a 1250% risk weighting, one of the harshest regulatory treatments of any major asset. In practical terms, this makes it extremely punitive for banks to hold Bitcoin on their balance sheets and it also results in pressure on credit rating agencies to completely disregard $BTC as having any value on a company’s balance sheet. For example, @Strategy has over $60 Billion worth of $BTC on its balance sheet and credit agencies currently value it at $0.00. That’s right, zero.
Think about all of this for a moment.
The same banking system that was tangled up in and received major taxpayer funded bailouts for:
• The 2008 mortgage crisis
• Massive losses on government bonds
• Ongoing commercial real estate stress
…has decided that Bitcoin deserves some of the most punitive capital treatment imaginable.
Why? Well, because…
Bitcoin doesn’t need a bank.
Bitcoin doesn’t need a central issuer.
Bitcoin doesn’t need permission.
Bitcoin allows ordinary people around the world to save in an asset that cannot be debased, diluted, or confiscated through inflation. It is borderless, fixed-supply, digital money transacts over the world’s largest open-source computing network.
The Basel rules deliberately favour a financial system where wealth remains concentrated inside banking institutions and where individuals like you and me are forced to rely on intermediaries whose incentives are counter to own and profit at our expense.
Bitcoin changes that equation.
This is why understanding Bitcoin isn’t just about price.
It’s about understanding who writes the rules, who benefits from those rules, and why an open monetary network is viewed as such a threat to the existing system.
The greatest financial innovation of our lifetime — Bitcoin — isn’t being ignored. It’s being regulated as if it must never be allowed to compete on equal footing.
You can “say no” to this rigged system and join hundreds of millions of others around the world in taking back power. Buy and hold Bitcoin in self custody, taking it off of exchanges.

It’s remarkable the number of people who have opinions about #Bitcoin but don’t know what the “difficulty adjustment” is nor that you can transact $BTC over Lightning network instantly, anywhere in the world, at almost no fee, without an intermediary. Study Bitcoin.

For those tracking #Bitcoin exchange rate with top fiat currencies, we’re now at 40% from all time $BTC high, the last difficulty adjustment was down 3.28%, and we’re about to see another ~14% adjustment down. All of this suggests to me we saw some significant miner capitulation and exchange rate is bottoming.

🇨🇦 COMMIT TO DEMINIMIS TAX EXEMPTION FOR BITCOIN TRANSACTIONS — Amend the Income Tax Act to exempt everyday Bitcoin payments under a reasonable threshold, such as $10,000, from capital-gains tax. This would normalize digital commerce, empower small businesses, unleash pent up capital into our economy, and simplify compliance while stimulating innovation across the economy. It would also enable not-for-profit and charitable organizations across Canada to benefit more fully from the many use cases of #Bitcoin as a tool for individual, family and community empowerment.

I don’t own any real or paper gold. I’m more convinced than ever that I don’t want any. I’ll leave that for people who are ready to resign themselves to the so called “debasement trade” or, as I prefer to call it, the despair and cynicism trade.
Instead, I choose #Bitcoin #BTC. Bitcoin is the hope, optimism, and structural change trade. Others have called it the “purification trade”. Sure, I can get with that.
The move to gold is a cynical retreat from our world’s most pressing challenges. It is a giant middle finger to billions of people around the world for whom gold is an untenable asset due to security and access barriers, and its lack of portability in the face of major geopolitical uncertainty. This gold “debasement trade” is also a giant middle finger to younger generations left to reconcile the debts and downstream impacts of their predecessors. Gold will not and cannot provide these younger people the tools for renewal and rebuilding that are so urgently needed.
On the other hand, Bitcoin offers the opportunity not only to escape the impact of fiat currency debasement, but to also restructure social engagements, reformulate the incentives that drive political discourse, and build across borders and other arbitrary barriers. Bitcoin offers Gen Z and Gen Alpha not only affirmation that yes, our current economic and financial systems are fucked, but also a roadmap and tool for rebuilding.
What an ounce of gold will scarcely or never do for youth in a deprived community setting, Bitcoin can and will do.

Hubris (a short story)
In the year 2029, the global economy trembled—not from war or pandemic, but from a quiet revolution that had been gathering beneath the surface like tectonic pressure.
The story began a decade earlier. @Microsoft, @Apple, @Google, and the other titans of Silicon Valley were basking in record profits. Their balance sheets overflowed with trillions in cash and equivalents, most of it parked in U.S. Treasury bonds—low-yield, “safe,” and endorsed by decades of convention. CFOs nodded confidently at board meetings. Risk was for startups. Stability was strategy.
But a storm was building, and they refused to look up.
In a small but growing corner of the global economy, something different was taking root: Bitcoin. While the tech elite dismissed it as volatile, slow, or worse — a haven for libertarians and groups trying to go around institutions — it kept humming along, block by block.
@MicroStrategy, a company dismissed as a curious footnote on @CNBC, quietly continued converting its balance sheet into Bitcoin. Others followed, slowly, and then into a growing wave. Sovereigns too: El Salvador, Bhutan, then Brazil, Czech Republic, and more. A parallel system was forming, one that operated beyond borders, beyond central banks, and beyond the cautious worldview of the titans of corporate America.
By 2027, inflation had returned—not the kind central bankers claimed to control, but the kind that eroded real wages and made corporate bonds unattractive. U.S. debt spiraled as interest payments surpassed defense spending. Apple’s $200 billion in cash began to shrink—not in numbers, but in purchasing power. They were rich, yes. But so was Rome, once.
Still, they didn’t move.
Why risk headlines for a speculative asset? Why anger investors stuck in the modalities of the past, those convinced by Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett and other investing giants of the past that this Bitcoin thing was a speculative fad? Why rock the boat when the tide had always lifted them?
Because tides change.
When the dollar crisis hit in 2029, it wasn’t sudden. But the consequences were. Treasury yields spiked. Foreign investors and stable-coin companies dumped U.S. debt. The Fed, cornered, scaled up its money printing. The world finally noticed that the emperor’s currency had no clothes.
Meanwhile, Strategy’s balance sheet exploded in value, as did those of other corporations that joined the early wave of Bitcoin Treasury Companies. Once small-cap and mid-cap firms, these companies now dwarfed the giants of the past. Countries lined up to mine, secure, and settle in #Bitcoin $BTC. A new monetary standard emerged—not by decree, but by demand.
At an emergency summit in Davos, the CEOs of the world’s largest firms gathered in panic. Microsoft’s CFO whispered, “We should have bought Bitcoin back when it was under $100K.” Apple’s board, once lauded for its caution, found itself questioned by shareholders who watched their cash erode in real time.
The corporations that once shaped the world had missed the future by clinging to the past.
It wasn’t lack of information. It wasn’t bad luck. It was hubris.
And hubris, history reminds us, is always punished in the end.
$MSFT $AAPL $GOOG $NVDA $TSLA $NFLX
A nice visual of the global market caps of #Bitcoin and #gold. How long will it take for Bitcoin to surpass gold’s market cap? My guess is by 2029.

I see a recent uptick in commentary, including from a number of #Bitcoin holders, that BTC is not money. To me, the question of whether Bitcoin is money is settled. The answer is yes, which doesn’t negate the fact that it is also a tool for savings.
In the light of abundant evidence showing #BTC being used as money, around the world, debate about what threshold would appease critics as signifying “widely used” is kind of like debating whether sunbathing at midday for an hour in the Namibian desert” is “not advisable” or “extremely not advisable”.
I propose that the much more salient, interesting, and pressing matter for discussion is as follows…
What are the psychological and social dimensions of particular monies in terms of their variable uses as a “medium of exchange” and/or a “store of value” and what is the interplay between these uses in the context of people’s real, material circumstances?
For instance, people who have access to only rapidly debasing currencies are heavily incentivized to spend quickly and to convert their holdings of this money into other monies or assets that will retain value, or at least not debase as quickly. The most extreme case of this that I’ve heard to date in terms of ramifications is from Ian Frost and Bitcoin Boma, describing the situation in Malawi.
On the other hand, I wonder to what extent having access to a money (ie, BTC) which is demonstrated to accrue value over time incentivizes saving some of that money, even in instances where someone has little to no capacity to “save” (ie, all money is required for spending on daily/weekly needs). Does access to a money which accrues value over time foster transformative conditions for pushing past this threshold of spending only toward actual capital accumulation (ie, savings)?
I would find it much more valuable if critics of the relative “moneyness” of BTC could look deeper and investigate the conditions under which BTC is actually being used as money. Suspend your disbelief, if you must, in order to observe. I don’t want to speak on behalf of any of the groups that I work with around the world where BTC is being used as money and a tool for individuals and community development, but they would tell you that “something” magical is happening. There are psycho-social transformations afoot and I can’t help but believe that the qualities of BTC itself, a non-debasing money, have something to do with it.

With all due respect to Americans and others who are talking about the U.S. Government’s “first mover” advantage in setting up a #Bitcoin Strategic Reserve (SBR), the U.S. will at best be the third country to officially have an SBR, after #Bhutan and #ElSalvador. Of course, the U.S. has potential scale that most others don’t.
El Salvador is clearly the first mover on so many fronts, including the establishment of the El Salvador Government Bitcoin Office and publishing their #BTC reserves openly, for the whole world to monitor. 👇

The universe moves in mysterious ways. I have a story to share, and if you read on you'll see why I'm connecting it to a message shared on X by Dom Bei and Proof of Workforce (see pics below).
Twenty years ago, in late 2004, I was travelling from Nairobi to Kisumu for work. At the time, I worked with a global physicians NGO, and this was the height of the HIV/AIDS pandemic that was decimating communities around the world, especially throughout the African continent. I was on my way to Kisumu for meetings about scale up of access to antiretroviral drugs in the region. These were still the early days of HIV drug access throughout most of the continent.
My small flight to Kisumu was a mixed bag of people but it was mostly foreign aid workers from different countries. I recall having a few different conversations with people and also overhearing some conversations. As we arrived in Kisumu and I made way to my hotel, passing through the city, there was a massive fire which engulfed a three-story building. Crowds watched on. There didn't appear to be any firefighters on site.
It turns out that the fire was ravaging a building containing Kisumu's largest pharmacy, book store, and several other small businesses. Life-saving drugs, books, and more, gone!
It turns out further that, at that time, there was only one fire truck in town and the small fire brigade that staffed it were required, by law, to be stationed at the airport for the incoming flight from Nairobi (the one I had just arrived on).
Imagine, a fire truck and brigade rendered helpless to tend to a local emergency because their priority was tending to a plane full of foreign aid workers. The cruel, infuriating irony!
This experience taught me a valuable lesson about foreign aid, root causes, and unintended consequences.
That experience is part of what pushed me away from larger global aid agencies (I had also worked for WHO) and toward projects that are fundamentally "by and for" the community. It instilled in me a healthy skepticism of large global aid projects and an insistence on interrogating projects to ensure that they don't entail unintended consequences which outweigh the good to which they aspire.
The very next year, in 2005, I began working with Community Health Centres in Canada and around the world, and this enabled me to live out the values of social impact "by and for" communities. That work carried me forward to 2023 when I decided to make my next professional transition, shifting toward projects focused on #Bitcoin #BTC as a tool for social impact globally.
I made this transition, in 2023, because I had become convinced that Bitcoin presents unprecedented, upstream opportunity to shift global balances of power, to empower communities, and to achieve social impact around the world. Participating in the first @AfroBitcoinOrg conference in Accra, in late 2022, helped me arrive at that conclusion.
My belief in Bitcoin as a powerful pathway to global transformation is a claim that still falls on many deaf ears when I engage colleagues, friends, and strangers who fall under the umbrellas of social justice and global development but who haven't yet studied Bitcoin.
Coming back to the message here on X from Dom and Proof of Workforce though. To see this message in the days leading up to the
conference, and amidst so many other inspiring #ABC24 related tweets, it hits home in a very personal way. It pulls me back to that experience in Kisumu 20 years ago. It re-assures me that not only are we are on the right track via Bitcoin, but that in some small, magical ways, we are also making amends for the past.
I will be making a donation to Proof of Workforce to be passed on to the Kenya Fire Brigades Association. I invite you to do the same. See their tweet below for details. Thanks, Dom! 🫡
I'm sad to not be in attendance this year at conference, but to all of you who are, I send my love and very best wishes. Thank you for everything you are doing to make this a better world, now and for future generations. 🌍

Way to go
team! Vancouver is the #Bitcoin adoption and use capital of North America. Hopefully this will inspire other cities throughout the continent…and especially Toronto (being selfish, if I may).

The stories that our children will tell their children are almost unimaginable. They will rival in significance (perhaps surpass) the tales of transition from darkness to fire, from kerosine to electricity, from horse to automobile, from paper- and audio-based communications to the age of digital communications.
What will distinguish the tales of transition from broken, fiat money and financial systems to #BTC and #Bitcoin-based systems, however, will be the fascinating pathways of this transition.
These tales will be of an almost unbelievable admixture of individuals, groups, and communities around the world whose diverse and disconnected needs somehow magically coalesced to make manifest this transition. A very large proportion of these protagonists, no less, are forsaken or dismissed by the incumbent systems and structures which they are collectively interrupting.
We are still at the dawn of this transition, but we are at that special moment when we can finally recognize it for what it is.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is the most important #Bitcoin related podcast episode of 2024. It underscores — with data and thoughtful descriptions by
— what many of us already sense and know.
✅ The most publicized narratives about who Bitcoiners are, are simply not true. This is even more valid when one looks beyond the U.S., Canada, UK, Europe, Australia at the global landscape of Bitcoin adoption/use.
✅ ~75% of the most publicized, most promoted, most capitalized Bitcoin content creation (via various platforms) skews very heavily to a small portion of the actual market of people who currently study and use Bitcoin globally.
✅ From a marketing perspective many of us — especially in the U.S., Canada, UK, Europe, Australia — are failing miserably to get Bitcoin adoption where we say we want it to go. Why? Because we are allocating more than 80% of our marketing energy to a small market segment (~10%) of which roughly 4 in 10 are already now Bitcoiners. If Bitcoin were a company and this was the marketing department’s record/approach, the entire department would be fired.
I have so much more to say — and I probably will. For now, I’ll leave it at “please watch or listen to the episode” and take the messages to heart, particularly if you are a Bitcoiner in any of the regions I mention above (U.S., Canada, Europe, etc).

A few years after the deeper Bitcoin “aha” moment happened, it still amazes me that this puzzling, fascinating technology, global network and digital money would have caused me to move on from 20+ years in the community health non-profit world to pursue the goals of community development, social justice and human empowerment via different means. It must be underscored that what is being passed off as a potential “reset” by the U.S. Democratic Party appears to be an “everything but #Bitcoin” crypto fest. Fine, if that’s what is intended by this new “Crypto4Harris” campaign and what is desired by planners and decision-makers aligned with the party and Harris/Walz. But we should be clear about that and we must note what that portends.
It says that a potential reset on crypto is being approached strictly as an openness to repurposing Silicon Valley tech narratives via tokenization and more insiderism.
It is not about the values expressed by progressive members of the Democratic Partyy: values that Bitcoin exemplifies: financial inclusion, climate action, inclusive global development, and a program of peace. These global domains of #Bitcoin and its particular use cases, as distinct from the vast ecosystem of crypto, appear absent from the program.
While some may find business value in these other crypto (fair enough), let’s be frank: they are not ushering in change. They are simply continuing the frameworks, systems and structures of tech-forward, Silicon Valley, venture capital dominated industry, via new means.
Communities around the world are not harnessing these crypto to empower the unbanked and marginalized, nor to resist authoritarian rule and to fight for human rights.
There is no Solana Beach.
There is no Ethereum Ekasi.
There is no Doge 4 Social Good.
These other crypto are not revolutionizing energy production and economics like Bitcoin is. They are not scaling the supply of renewable energy and mitigating escaped methane like Bitcoin is. They are not outfitting communities around the world with electricity for the first time through unprecedented energy demand/supply models, again, like Bitcoin is.
No, these inspiring phenomena that are significant parts of the Bitcoin story around the world are apparently not up for discussion within the “Crypto4Harris” led reset.
These positive phenomena associated with Bitcoin are the domain of Bitcoin mining, and no representatives or researchers focused on Bitcoin mining have been invited to the list of esteemed speakers and thought-leaders within the new “Crypto4Harris” reset agenda.
Bitcoin, the first technology to use a blockchain; Bitcoin, the largest digital asset by market cap (larger than all others combined); Bitcoin, the world’s largest decentralized computing network and open-source software; Bitcoin, the world’s 14 largest currency; #Bitcoin, the truly revolutionary network and global money, feels absent from the “Crypto4Harris” program despite its overwhelming size, impact and clear alignment with progressive values on the global stage.
It must be said that this Crypto4Harris forum appears to characterized more by its glaring omissions than anything else.
Perhaps those of us who scratch our heads in bewilderment that the Democratic Party (or at least its Progressive wing) have not yet embraced Bitcoin with full-throttled passion will be pleasantly surprised as this “Crypto4Harris” process continues to unfold. Maybe. I hope so. So far though, signs do not look very promising.
In five years we will look back at this episode of Donald Trump and the Republican Party feigning support for #Bitcoin, and all of the people lining up behind Bitcoin Magazine’s recent platforming of this “package” as one of the biggest favours for the values and vision and expressed by progressive values (which I distinguish from values and policy expressed by the Democratic Party in the U.S.).
Bitcoin is a network, money and tool that is gradually freeing individuals and communities around the world from the shackles of global debt-money structures and systems.
Bitcoin is disrupting narratives and binary political and social frameworks.
When Bitcoin was created and launched, it was done with the understanding that, ultimately, human self-interest, ego, fallibility would remain motivating forces for many (most?) people adopting and using Bitcoin. Human, all too human, we remain.
It is, of course, this human fallibility which is causing many Bitcoin adopters in the U.S. (with some allies elsewhere) to promote freedom, moral and spiritual renewal, and progress, on the one hand, while on the other hand investing hope for these into a character (Trump) who is the archetype of moral and spiritual decay, decadence, opportunism, and psychopathy. The cognitive dissonance is piercing.
Yet, this episode will raise the visibility of Bitcoin; it will contribute to adoption (albeit skewed); and it will shift that Overton Window surrounding Bitcoin’s use and role globally. In so doing, however, it will advance a tool and movement globally that is disrupting the Imperial project perpetuated by the United States and it will extol the virtues of inclusion, equity and fairness that forms the basis of a progressive program, but which many politicians in the U.S. that are breaking away form the Democratic Party are still not prepared to effectively bring forward, captive as they are to strategy hinged on social and cultural analysis and bankrupt in political economy. The shift will happen, but not just yet apparently.
In the long run, the opportunistic and highly individualistic support by Trump, Republican Party, and Bitcoin affiliates will seed and fertilize the ground for the next stage of this evolutionary process for/with Bitcoin; one that is fundamentally more inclusive, communitarian, and global/humanitarian.
In the meantime, those of us who can see a bit further into the future must hold our noses and endure the stench of the manure. However, I do firmly believe it will be worth it.
Love and peace, y’all! 🧡
A big thank you to the German Government 🇩🇪 for selling 80% of their #Bitcoin #BTC at these very cheap exchange rates (below USD $60K) especially since a very large portion will now be held by individuals spread around the world, building a true global people’s movement of hope.
I relish the thought that many of these sats, once held by the German state, will now be held and used in communities throughout the global South to assist in true community development and empowerment where so many years of national “foreign aid” and multilateral loans have failed. Power to the people! ✊🧡
