It’s great, maybe not for adoption tho.

Looks like USA found their budget neutral acquisition strategy.

PSA Brands that sell products that include Bitcoin in the name.

If your brand is only about Bitcoin, you’ve capped your audience. No one wears USD shoes. After hyperbitcoinization, your brand is just “money fan club.”

You also want to bring in normies, and no normie is going to buy a pair of shades from bitcoin sunglass co.

Think bigger, stay cool longer.

To everyone complaining about boomers getting a free ride with real estate. You think they knew property would appreciate the way it did when they bought in 1970?

Hindsight is 20/20 and you’ll complain about bitcoin when it’s millions too.

Its is CRAZY how far a brand can get you.

We started a brewery (House of Funk) that is ultimately failing, but we did our best and launched incredible beer and coffee, along with unique imagery and packaging. Despite failing and now being up for sale, the brand we built opened doors to new opportunities that we couldn’t foresee or been able to enter without the hard work we did from day one.
FUNK Coffee Bar: The owners of Bentall Center in Vancouver wanted to create amenities for tenants that make it more appealing to sign leases. They envisioned a large expansive cafe which did happy hour beer at night. Being the only shop that did really good coffee and beer in town, they built a location with us in mind, and offered us a sweetheart lease deal which we would never had been able to get if it wasn’t for our brand. This cafe has ultimately acted as a launchpad to the coffee business thriving.

House of Lager: A multi-billion dollar development project was about to break ground in Squamish, and the developers wanted a brewery attached to their presentation centre to be able to talk shop with potential residential buyers after the presentation centre. Their GC, upstairs from our humble brewery, really loved our beer and brand, and introduced our team to the developers of Squamish Oceanfront.

Over the years, our brand has become disjointed, with the brewery failing, and the coffee business being the business that is thriving. So we’re relaunching everything for scratch, FUNK coffee, FUNK coffee bar, and the upcoming FUNK listening bar (shhh!) will the cafe that lives on, all powered by Bitcoin treasury, events and customers.

My advice to builders is do NOT make brand an afterthought. People need to understand what you are about, and how it relates to them. Done well, doors will open in ways that you could never have imagined. Especially with Bitcoin companies, technology is usually considered first and Brand is often an afterthought, but this is not how we are going to scale adoption. People need to think you are cool, and that you fit their lifestyle in order to want to relate. Think about Cash app and how sick their brand is, I WANT to be a user of this over something like Venom.

what’s the reason for Strike being in over 100 countries but not Canada?

Is it a regulatory hurdle? Wouldn’t be surprised 😒

We’ve held such awesome meetups at the coffee bar with amazing guests over the year, and I’m going to start recording and posting all of them going forward, for the content!

Last night Seb Bunney chatted about Bitcoin & Authenticity, and how we can use Bitcoin as a spiritual tool to get us back to the things that matter in our lives. Enjoy!

Me to nocoiner friends

It was pretty cool to see Mayor Ken Sim show up at the party and buy a bunch of pizzas for everyone.

It’s one thing to come to meetups while on the campaign trail, but another to just show up to hang out and eat pizzas with plebs!

Great

Pizza party today at the cafe, looking forward to the meetup next Wednesday with Seb Bunney!

It’s more than just coffee, it’s a vibe. 🤙

Being moderately technical and usually up to date, when gen-Z friends struggle with technology, nothing brings me more joy than calling them boomers.

I’m probably just grappling with getting old myself 💀

meetup recording from a couple weeks ago!

Shares his thoughts on Macro, and the endgame for the dollar.

I intend to record and share all of our meetups with presentations or interviews moving forward! I hope you enjoy!

I was very excited m to see Web Summit being held in Vancouver for this first time: putting our city as the meeting place for people working on revolutionary ideas.

Quantum, AI, high tech manufacturing! Crypto? Blockchain?

Where. Is. Bitcoin?

While states sign bills into law, and 100s of companies and new business models are created as Bitcoin becomes integrated into the financial system, there seems to be a total lack of awareness of something that we understand is as big , if not bigger than AI.

It’s a bit of a reality check as to how far outside the zeitgeist bitcoin actually exists in the tech world.

It makes me want to rally and throw a bitcoin party during web summit to let people know that we are here, and to maybe open some minds perhaps a moment earlier than they inevitably will be.

You can just drink better coffee…

One year as a cafe with a bitcoin treasury.

We have accepted ~$5000 CAD in BTC payments, mostly during meetups. We’ve distributed over ~$550 CAD in BTC tips to our barista team and spent a couple hundred with other merchants.

We currently hold ~$7,300CAD equivalent of BTC on our balance sheet, a growth of around 45% during that period.

We were using slack for our team chat and it was costing us $5k/year.

I spun up an Amazon lightsail instance and now we run Mattermost which is basically open source slack for $140/year.

Self-hosted and OSS for the win.

Okay I think I’m gonna change my account to be less of a reply guy and more about coffee and Bitcoin.

Hanging out

Edmonton today cooking up ideas.

Ladies and gentlemen, your financial system:

We don’t “already use digital money”.

We use a spaghetti mess of antiquated systems duct-taped together of each other protected by monopolies and regulatory capture.

Bank drafts in Canada provide zero advantage to a personal cheque and are subject to the same hold time (5 business days)

Domestic wires take about 2-3 business days.

There is no way for an individual to transfer large amounts of funds (~$20,000+) without two days settlement.

In twenty twenty fucking five……

This is what we’re competing against 😂

I actually expected to be able to buy cheap sats in this scenario but I guess not.

I’m generally opposed to severe non-violent prison time, but it seems like consensus is that Ross’ sentence was disproportionately harsh and #FreeRoss day 1 is obviously the right thing.

I’m skeptical.

Similar cases (e.g., Le Roux) have received comparable sentences (life without parole). Reducing or going straight to parole might make sense, but a free pass based on time served might be an overcorrection.

Bitcoiners argue he advanced BTC viability and he’s a hero for this, which I don’t disagree with, but these contributions don’t erase wrongdoing in the eyes of the law.

Thoughts??

Have I been radicalized by Bitcoin culture?

Spending time with friends and family makes me reflect on how different my views are on many topics. The economy, nutrition, politics & the role of government to name a few.

Many of us have been beneficiaries of the Cantillion effect and its effect on wealth concentration to certain degrees, so it’s difficult for them to relate to many of the problems which plague others within our civilization.

In our privileged eyes, the system is working and life is going great!

Those who see the issues believe that the government is the solutions to the problems that exist in society (housing, inequality, climate). The libertarian in me pushes back but I also find myself needing to pause and consider what truths exist within conventional ideology and try my best to listen more than to pontificate.

I wonder if I am hesitant to express my controversial opinions or am I trying to keep an open mind to mainstream beliefs?

Do I truly possess some deeper understanding of how the world works and what the future holds which the majority of those around me are blind to? It seems unlikely?

I also see a number of wacko conspiracies written by respected voices in the community (moon landing, 9/11, etc) which also gives me pause about which end of the bell curve I’m drawing wisdom from.

And then I see events unfold into the present, many of which the Bitcoin community predicted (Inflation & its consequences, increasing censorship, surveillance, control, and war). I see the government and media flailing to try to spin and control the narrative. The price of Bitcoin continues to skyrocket which means that the market is validating the hypothesis. I see a community of Bitcoiners who are builders and optimists, trying to create a better world.

My beliefs are reinforced.

It can be isolating and lonely at times when the worldviews between me and the people I care for are so far apart. One saving grace is that I do have a community of Bitcoiners both online and in-person who share the same ideals although I sometimes wonder if we are just the goldbugs of the 1970s waiting 50 years for their prophecy to unfold.

I hope that over time that this community expands and more people become aware of the things that we see, so that there are others who we can relate to on the matters of our times.
