How I see size making a change to harmony of society and social relations.
The efficient size of pretty much everything has shrunk. Technology is allowing smaller constellations to exist. With smaller units, there's naturally more responsibility, transparency and accountability. We have identifiable people, friends, and neighbors, rather than faceless corporations and bureaucrats or elected clowns in far-away capitals. The visible taxation for which we hardly see much goodies is exchanged for visible money flows in the here and now.
Even if we create fewer public goods -- or they become individually more expensive for us -- they are honest, real, and accountable. Instead of turning our friends and neighbors against one another as perennial parasites leaching off one another's work, we remain friends and neighbors with shared interests.
The future allows this. The efficient size of cities and social communities will shrink.

Look, this isn't bigoted or ignorant or mean or rude or whichever other trashy adjective people could use.
Bitcoin culture HAS CONTENT. It isn't just a neutral do-nothing for the world and its inhabitants. It impacts us, and the rules it embodies in us have repercussions for the moral or political values we hold.
The trans fad or the open celebration of sexual differences is a faltering society’s ultimate shit-test: demanding that everyone betray their own eyes lest they be labeled a bigot. Shove obscenities in others’ faces.
Should we therefore assault people who cross-dress or send them to jail? Obviously not; just leave them alone. Should we celebrate their confusion, go out of our way to accommodate them practically and socially? Also no; just leave them alone.
We can call bullshit on what betrays sense without unfairly ostracize people with weird beliefs or behaviors. Indeed, as Bitcoiners we have a lot of those.
But we don’t have to overdo compassion to the point of insanity and thereby give in to anyone’s impression of reality, however idiotic.

It's been a long goddamn journey here: ups and downs, milestones and shortcomings.
After watching and enjoying (online) chess for 2+ years, I finally started playing maybe a year ago. Studied some openings, watched some instructional videos, did a lot of chess puzzles. Little by little. Now and again I would play and for the last six months I have averaged maybe 10-15 games a day.
Life on the 64 squares is so astonishing, so reminiscent of the real world out there, so connected to the ethereal ideas of #bitcoin (shout-out,
) and #spirituality. Your play echoes your state of mind, where your focus is, what's troubling you in life:
- If I'm worried or upset, my attention is worse and I make more mistakes.
- If I'm tired or hungry or antsy from not having moved the body enough or slept properly, I play worse and make more mistakes.
- If something is distracting me, like a person or a movie or the household chores, I miss things and make more mistakes.
A lot of lessons there about splitting attention and the importance of deep work.
The anger that's unleashed when I mess up (note: not when I get outplayed, that's mostly just beautiful) or overlook obvious moves that I could have/should have seen is unlike anything else I've ever experienced. I don't really get mad, but fucking up my chess games makes me bang the table, uncontrollably stamp the floor and throw things across the room. Again, I believe it echoes life in the guttural frustration you might feel when you stray from a path you know is good for you, when you know deep down that you CAN do better.
Chess doesn't bullshit you, and doesn't care about your rationalizations, excuses or fancy explanations. The information is right there, on the board, objectively displayed for everyone to see (and your opponent to take advantage of). It resembles truth in some cosmic sense, again not unlike Bitcoin.
What's so fascinating about this is that across various time periods (30 days, 90 days, 1 year), I win about 50% of my games and lose about 45% (5% drawn). Small, small improvements/alpha/efforts -- imperceptible in the short run -- when repeated day in and day out eventually show amazing results.
Keep at it. If you're straying from the path -- regroup, refocus, and do it again. The sun will rise and we will try again. Consistency beats anything else.
Gradually, then suddenly. In bitcoin, in life, in fitness and health -- and also, in chess.

Four years ago today, my life radically changed.
The magic of these lands called, called out powerfully and irresistibly to my lost soul.
THIS is where I had to be, it said. THIS is where I had to spend my days, revere its stillness and vastness -- its energies and extremities.
Some moments simply define our lives, and this was mine.
Passing another hill in the breathtaking, golden evening light of Iceland’s marvelous summers, I spotted a large waterfall in the distance. Quickly checking my map, I realize it’s the waterfall we meant to visit the next day, but we somehow stumbled upon tonight already. With the orange-golden shimmering light of these magic summer evenings, I know that I wanna go there right away. Every inch of my body is physically screaming for it. Craving it.
To the west, the silhouette of a large hill, darkened against the setting sun. It’s only 10.30 pm, and the sun won’t touch the horizon for another hour, but the valley before me is rapidly losing light. I know that if I want to see this waterfall in precious sunlight, now is the time.
I get out of the car, bouncing in anticipation. The thunderous roar of the waterfall hundreds of meters away is a subtle reminder of what’s awaiting. I feel the excitement in my bones, and start to run towards the lookout point. Halfway there I notice a strange, tingling sensation across my left side — like I’m shivering, but in an odd, agreeable way.
When I round the last corner of the jagged path, the great Goðafoss comes into full view. The fall is only 12m high, but very wide, rounded and perfect. As I stare in wonder at the fantastic scenery before me, the roaring water splashes moist into the air, drizzling stray drops on my forehead, on my arms and gloves, and on my far-from-waterproof runners. Don’t care. I barely even notice. Nothing else matters but the sight in front of me: the storming waterfall, the magic midnight sun shining its ethereal light over that tumbling Icelandic hillside.
I’m too far into a sense of wonder, so emotionally in trance that it doesn’t even occur to me to snap a photo. I scoff in disbelief at how wonderfully perfect this sight is. Loss for words. Unreal. Insane.
And then it happens. The sun moves across the ridge for that stunning pre-sunset glow and the unfamiliar tingling in my left side expands to most of my body. The light is exploding in the distance, the sparkling colors a perfect complement to an already perfect sight. If nature were a deity, I’d be a converted believer.
At once I know that this is the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen.

I might be poorer than I was back then, poorer than I would have/could have/should have had I opted for another path. My mind might be occupied by different (higher? stupider?) things than it was then. My character might be much less optimistic and happy, more resentful and sullen. My social circle definitely less tightly knit. But my body is stronger -- stronger than it ever was -- and my soul is, for the most part, in tune with the life it craves.
Everyone who has felt a call like mine knows that, actually, there was no other path, no other alternate path to walk. Come heaven or hell, disaster or glory, these are the mountains and fjords I had to wander. This is where I belong.
Lex Fridman recently: "You just have to listen to the inner voice, you have to listen to yourself and make the decisions that don't make any sense for the rest of the world but make sense to you."
