“Gold failed to resist government control and manipulation.” — Dr. Saifedean Ammous, Independent Economist & Author Bitcoin Standard
His point, at The Bitcoin Mena Conference wasn’t that gold lacked scarcity — it was that its physical settlement costs and reliance on centralized custody made control inevitable. Once paper claims replaced movement of metal, monetary discipline disappeared.
What stood out: ✅ Gold’s failure framed as a settlement problem ✅ Centralized custody enabling paper expansion ✅ Bitcoin’s low-cost settlement changing the equation ✅ On-chain exit acting as a constant check on intermediaries
The interesting signal here is optionality. Even if most activity moves to layers or custodians, the ability to exit to the base layer quietly shapes behavior upstream.
