On the one end people are being priced out of running web services due to hardware shortages caused by AI, on the other end those who still run web services are being bled dry by AI scrapers essentially stealing compute.

Can’t believe August is almost over. Between moving countries, settling in a new home, and getting back into work, summer just kind of flew by… It used to be that #ATG would mark the end of summer for me in a bittersweet way but this year I didn’t go…

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/117117221397911074

After hearing feedback from people struggling with #Mastodon’s layout and navigation for a long time I’m really looking forward to these changes. And I’m really impressed with the work

has put into researching user needs with surveys, interviews, and round tables. I feel like the community has never been so represented in the design process before. The screenshots are marked “in progress” for a reason though—it’s a process.

I’ve been dealing with #PPWR compliance for Mastodon’s merch shop and frankly I don’t see how this regulation doesn’t just eradicate all small business within the EU. This is a self-goal if I’ve ever seen one.

Doorknobs are the work of the devil, designed only to make people suffer. "Yes, I would like to apply inordinate force on a small slippery sphere" -- statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged.

This bothers me in almost every contemporary production.

I love a good trail.

RE: https://det.social/@lostgen/116820546568940358

My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.

As I'm trying to put together more collections, I'm noticing that many accounts, even ones you'd expect to want to have wider reach, aren't opted in to being featured in discovery experiences (e.g. trending page, collections, follow recommendations). If this sounds like you, please, go to More -> Privacy & Reach and check your preferences.

Now that collections are more widely rolled out, once again sharing my web comics on the fediverse collection:

What would you like me to record a #Mastodon tutorial about next? (I kindly request that you check the playlist of tutorials I already made before suggesting something)

Hey folks! Remember I was asking what kind of merch you'd buy for #Mastodon's 10 years anniversary? It's here now! Hoodies and t-shirts made from organic, certified cotton, screen printed with a cute unique design in 5 vibrant colors. This is limited edition stuff, 100 units each, never happening again. Note: There are women's cut t-shirts this time.

A new episode in my series of tutorials on how to use #Mastodon! This time, going over every profile customization feature, from the basics, to custom fields, to verification, and more. Have you learned something you didn't know before from this video? Then please let me know!

Do you want to learn the power of search on #Mastodon? With my fourth video in my series of Mastodon tutorials, you can! Did you already know all of this, or did you learn something new? Please let me know!

Third in the series of my #Mastodon tutorials: How to deal with unwanted content. Covering reporting, muting, blocking, word filters and notification settings. If you learn something you didn't know before from my video, please do let me know!

I haven't thought twice about where "lorem ipsum" was from. It's fascinating how much history there is behind something so inconsequential. And I'm glad that some people still dig for answers when most just parrot falsehoods.

Second in my series of tutorials on how to use #Mastodon is now up. I go over the home feed, how to fill it up with interesting things using the trending feed and hashtags, and how to declutter it with lists. Let me know if you learn something you weren't aware of from this video 🙂

After doing a couple of private workshops on how to use #Mastodon, I've decided I could just record a series of tutorials and have everyone benefit from it. Mastodon has a lot of features, and sometimes even long time users aren't aware of all of them! The first episode is about making posts on Mastodon--going over every aspect.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@JMarkOckerbloom/116642253074554430

No, not you too 😭

When I was growing up, we had operating systems that exposed a lot of the technical details about their inner workings, and websites that let us use code to customize them, like MySpace and Geocities. UX designers in tech have since optimized away most of the stuff that allowed and encouraged people to learn to use technology and now people get confused by files and browser tabs. And as the knowledge shrinks, more and more things have to be simplified away. I only ever see it as a one way road.

I cannot express how much I love this 🥲

The team has quietly launched collections on mastodon.social as was promised (but slightly delayed) in a blog post a few weeks ago. Here's one I made for webcomics of Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/collections/116533503334952204

I spent the week with my wife's family in Tuscany and am now, dreadfully, back home in Germany.

Male fragrance sections at shops are always so sad. Would you like to smell like you just downed a bottle of gin, like a leather couch, or like you were sitting on the wrong side of a campfire? Women get all the nice fruits and flowers. This stuff shouldn’t be gendered anyway like most things.

I'm planning to make some merch for #Mastodon's 10th anniversary and I would like to gauge which products folks might be most interested in buying. Remember, it's all bespoke, I can't make everything. For the sake of argument let's assume you love the original design that for now I want to keep a surprise...

#Merchtodon

It's #PortfolioDay, and for once I'm also going to partake by sharing a few of my photos. I am a photographer and I shoot predominantly on film. I enjoy the slow and tactile process, and I love the grain. I try to take pictures of things I find beautiful or meaningful. You can see more of my work on my website:

Need more pictures of #plushtodon to improve mental health (⁣#blåhaj will also do).

Normally I'd be more excited about a moon mission, but I'd vastly prefer if any other nation was doing it. Can't really care about it when the US is bombing civilian bridges in Iran and then bombing the first responders (and as of today, apparently announcing genocide. Not their first time, I guess).

RE: https://frogs.lgbt/@alyx/116232623564098477

Anyone in #BelieveInFilm interested?

I know 100% that people will argue with me over this, but I miss when movies were professionally lit, when actors were intentionally blocked, and when more than teal, orange and beige were allowed to be on the screen. The medium has something to do with it--film made a lot of these things fundamentally necessary--but I think it's more complex than just that. The last few years' movies are just not pleasant to look at, with very few exceptions, and the change occurred sometime around 2015.

Machine translations are often brought up as a gotcha whenever I criticize LLMs. It's worth pointing out two things: Machine translations existed decades before LLMs, and yes, machine translations are useful. However: I would never in my life read a machine translated book. Understanding what a social media post is talking about in rough terms? Sure. Literature? Absolutely not. Hell, have you ever seen machine translated subtitles? It's absolute garbage.

This is what they took from us.

I feel like in the last couple media interviews I’ve done after stepping down as CEO I’ve done a much better job communicating the vision and importance of the fediverse than I’ve ever done before, which is ironic but maybe logical? Brain work better when less pressure?
