There’s a concept in design that I forget the name of and too lazy to look it up - but the idea is that you don’t want to overwhelm people with too many choices. More choices = more time and effort to make a decision. And once you repeat this mistake throughout your app, you’re creating unnecessary friction and stress.

The paradox of choice is I believe the title of a TED talk on this subject and Dan Airly god help me I misspelled his name for sure, wrote a book on this.

Ask not what you can show to your users, but what you can hide and still allow for good discovery.

This is something I designed a few years back. Would love to see something similar but nostr-focused.

1. Basic profile info
2. Configurable widgets for any type of nostr content
3. Configurable widgets for other types of content - github integration for example, custom skills, podcast links etc.

Concept: a guided flow to encourage you to explore the nostr client.

Could also bake in friend invites. I already had an invite flow designed but it was for 1-1 invites which is already a thing in Snort (sort of).

Here’s a preview of “artstr” - working name..

I have other screens, but sharing what I linked together.

1. Focus on media (media-first)
2. Make it about the people, not nostr the tech, blossoms or payments (though everything will be powered by those things).
3. Discover new art and artists (promote new artists)
4. Home gallery - requires skin in the game to have you stuff shown here - maybe a nostr address qualifier with revocation for abuse.
5. You can upload anything you like, but gallery views will prioritize original art not generated stuff. People might sneak in too, but risk revocation of nostr address (a qualifier to be in the gallery).
6. Tagging of uploaded media as “Original” or “Generated”. You must select one or the other. If tagged as Original, automatic barring from being used for AI training. This will be spelled out in terms of use. Violators can be held liable by the artist.
7. Generated art will not be subject to the above rule.
8. Emphasize sharing and bookmarking. This needs to work well, and we probably can’t use njump for this. Eventually users might be able to create collections and share their entire collections (maybe somehow zap split, not sure).
9. Zaps not visible unless the person adds a lightning address. Taking Signal’s approach here - focus on the purpose of the client, payments are secondary.

Selling art, collaborations, zap splits are all great ideas but too much for V1, or even V2, could be something for down the road.

I will review all of the other feedback that you guys left for me yesterday and categorize / design if applicable and doable.

I welcome further feedback / push back / criticisms, anything you want to throw at me.

Some designs I'm toying around with

1. Slightly enhanced relay settings with explainers, FAQ, clearer status (noticed I'm missing paid/free tag)

2. Relay overview screen with event stats, human-understandable NIP summaries, paid/free indicator.

3. Article preview with reader mode button. Potentially sidebar widget for trending articles

4. Reader mode, share outside of nostr buttons (not sure if they're worth it tbh), subscribe (doesn't exist, nor planned)

5. Further article discovery at the bottom

6. Highlights

Not sure if I'd recommend paid relays though, that could just be a link to a marketplace of some sort (doesn't exist).

One enhancement that would really make nostr stand out is being able to see where a reaction came from (what kind of event).

Right now, if you write an article and someone zaps it, all you will see is that you got zapped. It won't say "Karnage zapped your article".

If you stream and you have a goal set up and someone zaps that goal, you'll just see a zap. You won't even see an event or be able to track back to what was zapped. But, it could say "NoGood zapped your goal" for example.

I don't know how challenging it would be to make this happen, but I think people would be much more likely to see connect the dots when they see they are getting value / comments / shares of the "other stuff" in their notifications.

If your client allows npub login (not all do weirdly), it helps to indicate that you’re in read only mode

Design is an ongoing endeavor. There is a phase in the product where you design and ship the initial version, but it doesn’t end there. You have to continue refining products until you reach some meaningful adoption.

If you’re working on a nostr client and you got some design help already, but haven’t picked up from initial engagement, don’t hesitate to reach out. There are only a handful of designers but we’ll do our best to keep assisting. At least I know that’s true of myself.
