✍️ A team of local researchers in Timor-Leste, led by Australian marine ecologist Karen Edyvane, has been monitoring pygmy blue whales using drones and citizen science, generating a wealth of information about the species.
👉 Pygmy blue whales are one of the largest animals on earth, with vast habitats and elusive nature making them challenging to study. 👉 The project has been running for over 10 years and has spotted nearly 3,000 pygmy blue whales. 👉 The team uses drones to capture aerial footage and photographs, and locals are trained to identify and document the whales. 👉 The project has also led to the establishment of a research station and the development of whale-watching tours. 👉 Whale tourism has the potential to create jobs and grow the local economy in Timor-Leste, one of the poorest countries in the world.
