👉 African policymakers, academics, and philanthropists gathered to discuss the rising rates of noncommunicable diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes, in the region. 👉 The number of people in sub-Saharan Africa with type 2 diabetes rose from 4 million in 1980 to 23.6 million in 2021, with projections suggesting that cases will more than double to 54.9 million by 2045. 👉 Researchers are studying the genetic diversity of African populations to better understand the disease and develop more effective treatments. 👉 The study of African populations has already challenged traditional understandings of the biology of type 2 diabetes and may lead to the discovery of new drug targets.
