HALF-YEARLY LOSS OF ALMOST $15M FOR NSW NATIVE FOREST LOGGING SHOWS INDUSTRY FUTURE SHAKY, CONSERVATIONISTS SAY

✍️ The native forest logging division of the New South Wales government's forestry agency has posted a half-yearly loss of almost $15m, prompting questions about the industry's economic viability.

👉 The Forestry Corporation of NSW's hardwood forests division lost $14.9m in the first half of 2024-25. 👉 The division's total losses since 2020 are $87m. 👉 Critics argue that the ongoing losses raise questions about the government's financial sustainability. 👉 The forestry agency attributes the loss to higher land management costs, lower timber production due to adverse weather, and regulatory changes.

‘BAD DEAL FOR TAXPAYERS’: HUGE LOSSES FROM NSW FOREST LOGGING, REPORTS REVEAL

https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/b6a5307f9cef3c0778cc272553fce70c9b4f517d/0_273_8192_4918/master/8192.jpg?width=140&quality=85&auto=format&fit=max&s=1bc615cc416f149e4c8a67526c240319

✍️ Two reports reveal significant financial losses from native forest logging in New South Wales, raising questions about the industry's economic viability.

👉 NSW Forestry Corporation consistently made a loss by paying contractors more for harvesting and haulage than it earned from delivering timber to sawmills 👉 The corporation has lost $72m since 2020-21 and $29m in the past year 👉 The industry is struggling financially, offering 'poor returns to taxpayers at best' 👉 Leaving native forests standing has benefits such as carbon sequestration, erosion control, flood mitigation, and tourism
