✍️ Citizen scientists and expert conchologists are teaming up to conduct a London-wide search for the endangered German hairy snail, found in fragmented patches of habitat along the tidal Thames.
👉 The German hairy snail is found in fragmented patches of habitat along the tidal Thames. 👉 It was not recorded in Britain until 1982, but fossilised remains indicate it has been present for thousands of years. 👉 The snail is typically found clinging to debris along the high-tide line of the Thames. 👉 The fine hairs on its shell allow it to shed moisture and cling to plants and slippery objects. 👉 The coordinated search is led by Citizen Zoo and the Zoological Society of London, with over 100 volunteers participating. 👉 The surveys will help identify how habitat restoration, pollution management, and translocation can help boost the snail population.
