The analysis, led by forensic archaeologist Elena Pilli, was conducted on fragmentary skeletal remains from 14 plaster casts, selected from 86 casts that are currently undergoing restoration. The findings challenge traditional gender and familial assumptions, revealing that an adult wearing a golden bracelet and holding a child was an unrelated adult male and child, and that a pair of individuals thought to be sisters or mother and daughter were found to include at least one genetic male. The study also reveals a greater genetic diversity in Pompeii than was suspected, with individuals studied being mainly descended from relatively recent immigrants from the eastern Mediterranean and Near East. ● Traditional assumptions about the identities and relationships of Pompeii victims were wrong ● An adult wearing a golden bracelet and holding a child was an unrelated adult male and child ● A pair of individuals thought to be sisters or mother and daughter were found to include at least one genetic male ● Pompeii had a greater genetic diversity than was suspected, with individuals being mainly descended from recent immigrants from the eastern Mediterranean and Near East
