THE ALBUM 'STEAL THIS ALBUM!' BY SYSTEM OF A DOWN WAS BORN FROM A LEAK AND WAS INSPIRED BY DAVID HASSELHOFF. THE STORY BEHIND THE ALBUM IS THAT THE BAND'S ORIGINAL ALBUM, 'TO RECORD ONLY WATER FOR TEN DAYS', WAS LEAKED ONTO THE INTERNET BEFORE ITS OFFICIAL RELEASE. IN RESPONSE, THE BAND DECIDED TO RELEASE A NEW ALBUM, 'STEAL THIS ALBUM!', WHICH INCLUDED SOME OF THE SAME SONGS THAT WERE LEAKED, AS WELL AS NEW MATERIAL. THE ALBUM'S TITLE IS A REFERENCE TO THE 1971 BOOK 'STEAL THIS BOOK' BY ABBIE HOFFMAN, WHICH IS A GUIDE TO CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE AND SOCIAL ACTIVISM. THE ALBUM'S COVER ART IS A PARODY OF THE COVER ART FROM THE BOOK. THE ALBUM WAS RELEASED IN 2002 AND RECEIVED MIXED REVIEWS FROM CRITICS, BUT IS STILL A FAN FAVORITE AMONG SYSTEM OF A DOWN'S DISCOGRAPHY.
