ANCIENT SITE STIRS HEATED POLITICAL DEBATE ON INDIA'S PAST
✍️ The Keeladi village in India's Tamil Nadu state has unearthed ancient artefacts that have sparked a political and historical battle, challenging existing narratives about early civilization in the Indian subcontinent.
👉 The excavation site has revealed 15,000 artefacts, including burial urns, coins, and terracotta pipes, from a 2,500-year-old urban settlement.
👉 The finds have sparked excitement across Tamil Nadu and beyond, challenging the dominant narrative that urbanization in ancient India was a northern phenomenon.
👉 The controversy has also led to political tensions, with some politicians drawing links between Keeladi and the Indus Valley civilization.
👉 The Tamil Nadu state department of archaeology estimates the artefacts to be 2,000 to 2,500 years old, with the oldest dating back to around 580 BCE.
👉 The excavation site has also revealed graffiti in the Tamil Brahmi script dating back to the 6th Century BCE, which shows that it is older than the Ashokan Brahmi script.
