The Life of Tom Marshall by Jim Stumm: Reconstructing a Life From Its Newsletters

Tom Marshall, who wrote as El Ray and later Rayo and coined the word vonu, left his record mostly in small newsletters and letters. In The Life of Tom Marshall, Jim Stumm arranges that record into a chronology from the 1963 Free Isles group to a last known letter in February 1974, reprinting long passages and speaking in marked editor's notes. Its historical value lies in how Stumm grades claims: he ties events to dated sources and labels his additions as speculation, leaving the years before and after that span as visible gaps. Liberty Under Attack Publications issues it as an undated reprint, available as a publisher PDF, with a July 2019 foreword by Shane Radliff.

Stumm's early chapter starts from one sentence in PREFORM #1, June 1968: "I am a consulting engineer, 36 years old, no family." From that self-report he infers a birth around 1932 and speculates about college and the Korean War draft. His first guess put the upbringing on the West Coast, where Marshall's earliest known address and all his recorded travels lay. A bracketed note later relays an unnamed informant, someone Stumm says should know, who placed the childhood in New England. That correction comes from one trusted report, and the birth year and schooling still hang on a single self-description.

The first extensive record concerns Preform, the 1963 to 1965 Free Isles study group. A January 1964 newsletter reports that Marshall had presented a paper, The Case for Constitutionalism, and the August 1964 issue summarizes it as defending a constitutionally limited government with an explicit territorial monopoly against competing dispute resolvers. Stumm reads this as minarchism, though he holds the Gill Cantwell paper it apparently answered and lacks Marshall's own, so Marshall's earliest recorded politics survive as a newsletter summary.

INNOVATOR's colophons, as Stumm reports them, show changing owners and editors, with Cara Leach managing in 1964, Kerry Thornley editing from that November, Marshall managing and then editing during 1965, and El Ray holding intermittent editorial roles through the final 1969 issue. Stumm counts at least 46 full-size Marshall articles, confirms El Ray as the one pen name he knows for certain and labels a few name-withheld pieces as suspected, a grading Appendix 1 preserves. He prints an unsigned 1973 letter to an energy magazine under a question-marked heading and attributes it to Marshall as his own conjecture, citing clues such as a shared mailing address.

Appendix 2 credits Marshall with 16 articles in the 1973 VONU LIFE handbook issue, leaves 13 unsigned pieces open and assigns the longest, 36 pages on food, to Haelen Hygeia, a pen name used by Roberta. Al Fry, Paul Doerr and Stumm, as Lysander, also contributed. Stumm judges that Marshall and Roberta wrote most of the issue, so Roberta stands as a separate author, and treating the handbook as Marshall's alone misassigns its largest article.

The last known letter is dated February 14, 1974, and as far as Stumm could discover, nobody heard from or about Marshall again. His earlier guesses ranged from a fatal accident to a deliberate break in contact. Later he became convinced Marshall had died, a belief he says rests on long silence without definite information. He adds that Marshall never objected to the reprints and that he has seen no writing in Marshall's style, which he trusts himself to recognize, under any name. Both are arguments from absence. His closing chapter calls the disappearance a complete mystery, and nothing it presents establishes death, successful withdrawal, accident or illness.

Stumm's colophon readings and article counts rest on his own collection, which he says covers most of the newsletters, and the appendices list attributions by issue and page in INNOVATOR and the 1973 VONU LIFE. The book suits readers tracing authorship and dates in vonu's small-press record from 1963 to 1974; Marshall's life outside those years remains Stumm's inference and secondhand report.
