A Life in Liberty: Liber Amicorum in Honor of Hans-Hermann Hoppe

A Life in Liberty is a liber amicorum, a book made by friends for a friend, edited by Jörg Guido Hülsmann and Stephan Kinsella for Hans-Hermann Hoppe's seventy-fifth birthday. Hoppe is the honoree; colleagues, friends and family members supply chapters ranging from well wishes to footnoted papers. The edition to use is the corrected second printing, published by Papinian Press in Houston in October 2024 and offered as a PDF on the editors' page. It is a separate book from Property, Freedom, and Society, the 2009 festschrift the same editors prepared for his sixtieth birthday.

The editors' preface frames the book as a celebration and speaks warmly of their long friendship with Hoppe. That sets fair expectations: this is a deliberately celebratory tribute from a sympathetic circle, so gauging Hoppe's wider scholarly reception requires other sources. Its value is as a primary record of an intellectual network applying property-centered reasoning to economics, law, migration and culture. The opening family recollections portray a demanding scholar at close range, including what that focus sometimes cost at home; they illuminate mentorship and character, leaving the theories to be judged on their arguments.

David Howden's chapter on immigration and the subsistence fund asks a question aggregate studies often skip: who gains, and who bears the costs? A rise in national output leaves uncompensated a worker who loses wages to new competition, and visa fees paid to a government reach affected individuals only if officials direct them there. That distributional point is useful; his answer is more contestable. He treats legal systems, infrastructure and other institutions built from past taxes as a citizen-owned public subsistence fund, argues that each newcomer dilutes citizens' shares like a new stock issue, and proposes payments from arrivals to specific citizens. The shared-purse analogy carries the proposal, yet citizen ownership enters as a contested normative premise; the chapter does not show how past taxation gives a particular person a title that arrivals could dilute. The dilution image fits only part of the fund, since legal systems and roads often serve one more user at little added cost. Newcomers supply labor and capital and pay taxes, and Howden's own notes acknowledge fiscal estimates near zero. The question deserves attention; the shareholder model is one disputed answer.

Stephan Kinsella's "Defamation as a Type of Intellectual Property" links trademark and defamation law through what both protect: reputation. Following Rothbard, he treats reputation as what other people think of you. His property framework protects only the physical integrity of scarce resources, bodies included, so a legal right to reputation would restrict how others use their own bodies and property. This is a normative critique of existing law, distinct from a description of current doctrine or legal advice, useful for testing the edges of legal categories. Its pressure point is how falsehood, fraud and participation in aggression relate. Kinsella concedes in a footnote that speech can play a causal role in aggression, and readers will want a sharper account of where a lie becomes fraud. Jörg Guido Hülsmann's "The Economics of Metaphysics" is the most ambitious of these essays. It asks how political institutions change the payoff to adopting a philosophical framework. When statute can override contracts and customary relations, knowing the current positive rules becomes more useful than understanding stable natural ones. The power to change rules at any time raises compliance uncertainty, and state protection from liability can let costlier approaches survive by shifting their costs onto others. As an incentive explanation this deserves a hearing. It takes realism and natural law as premises and treats nominalism broadly, so its force depends on those premises and leaves the truth of realism to separate argument. The historical chain it proposes is only sketched and needs independent support, and its closing medical and cultural examples are assertions that need testing.

Philipp Bagus's "The Use of Private Property in a State Culture" demands careful reading. Its starting point is sound: nominal title leaves open whether subsidies, regulation, anticipated retaliation or state-shaped opinion drove a choice, and one can respect title while condemning a use. From there Bagus takes openly illiberal positions. He posits a Christian and traditional culture as what a free society would produce, an added counterfactual premise that ownership rules leave underdetermined. He keeps a state ban on private censorship available as a last option (p. 312). He approvingly quotes Hoppe (p. 313) on physically removing, from covenant communities founded to protect property and family, advocates of democracy or communism and people habitually promoting lifestyles the passage lists as incompatible, homosexuality among them. The stated trigger is advocacy and habitual promotion within such covenants, a narrower condition than orientation as such. The passage still prescribes forced expulsion aimed at speech and ways of living; calling it freedom of association would understate it. Whether such terms could be just is an ethical question that ownership language leaves open.

French's chapter applies time preference and capital consumption to democracy; its broader historical claims need independent checking. The volume closes with DiLorenzo's favorite Hoppe quotations, a tribute ending on the work of persuasion, while the editors' framing sits in the preface.

The book suits readers already familiar with Hoppe and Rothbard who want to examine this network's reasoning critically. Readers seeking neutral biography or a survey of policy consensus should look elsewhere. A sensible route runs from the preface and one family piece to Howden, Kinsella, Hülsmann and Bagus, asking which conclusions follow from ownership alone and which depend on premises the author adds.
