13. Horizon - Inktober prompt.

Thanks to

for the idea of combining my work. Made making this one a lot easier since I already had a sun. 👍

Was also fun to work on a technique I learned from Stefan Große Halbuer about how to draw irregular shaped objects in isometric. Still need a lot more practice, but I like the way the boat came together.

12. Remote - Inktober prompt.

They intended something different, given the theme of the other prompts, but this is what came to mind. 📺

11. Snacks - Inktober prompt.

Feel like I’m getting better at “isometric circles” AKA eclipse-in-a-box. 👍

10….. I read the prompt as Nomad, so that’s what I drew. #iykyk 😬

9. Sun - Inktober prompt.

Bit of color this time.

8. Hike - Inktober prompt.

Was reading about the Stairway to Heaven hike in Oahu and wanted to try something like that in isometric. Used the grid for a few stairs, then wanted them to be half that height, so started again. Thought it was a good idea to color the planes so I could easily see how to stack them … then realized it wouldn’t be “accurate” after I rotated a step …. and decided I didn’t care after seeing how annoying it would be to recolor each one.

The little black marks on the bottom is me trying out different brushes looking for one that was pressure sensitive so I could make little steps that looked like a toe box and a heel. Given how much I really like making little steps, I need to find or make a Procreate brush that looks like a hiking boot print. 🤔

7. Passport - Inktober prompt.

Played with text in this one.

Caught up on one art challenge. Getting further behind on the other one. Typical October. 🖌️🎨😎

6. Trek - Inktober prompt.

My first thought was the Enterprise, but I’m not ready to try something like that yet.

So here’s a 30 second video of my almost 3 hours creating a multi-level area for someone to trek through. 👣

5. Binoculars - Inktober prompt

Started out with good, boxy isometric intentions, then got lost in circles, then tried to restart and make a cylinder bigger at the lens end than the viewing side and it looks like it’s in normal perspective, which isn’t isometric at all, so probably should have stayed with the boxes and giving up for the day because of massive headache. 🤕

Gave myself a yellow checkmark for Effort.

4. Exotic - Inktober prompt.

Thought I would pick something simple (pyramid) and try to ink it.

Created a flat-sided pyramid and it’s all wrong for isometric … and the pyramids were a bunch of blocks anyway, so re-did the whole thing and shaded the planes because I do get mixed up trying to follow the lines and create the object if I don’t. Maybe that will happen less if I try a 20 degree grid? Going to do the full month in a 30 degree grid, for practice before trying something else.

Video has the whole process, because (at least for me trying a new thing) it’s about doing and doing again.

3. Boots - Inktober prompt

First image is final boots. Second is a video where you can watch me futzing with angles for the toe box, then going with just connecting grid vertices.

2. Discover - Inktober prompt.

Spent a lot of time playing with how to create isometric mountains. It’s a weird thing, not to have converging perspective lines. No matter where the mountain, closer or far, it’s the same height as all other mountains. Not sure I figured out the intersection of the planes correctly, but that’s a problem for another day.

For today, I drew an isometric treasure map. Second image is the reference. 😉

1. Backpack - from the Inktober prompt list.

This is my first attempt at isometric art. I used the grid native to Procreate (30 degrees) to block this out … more than once. Given that this took me 1.5 hours, I’m not going to spend time “finishing” it (inking, colors, details). I want to practice getting the objects correct on the grid first, before tackling the other stuff, so for this month, my daily practice will be a bunch of angled stuff.

October is know as Inktober for artists; an art challenge where you create a drawing a day based on their prompt list.

Over the years, folks have created their own drawing challenges based on this concept. I’ve added some of those themes as images on this note.

Some are every day, every other day, or even weekly.

As with any art challenge, take what works for you and leave the rest. Draw, paint, sketch, doodle - however you want to try and add some art to your life in October.

Prompt lists for 2 different Art Challenges that run in October:

1. Undying Tales run by Stephanie Law
2. Inktober run by Jake Parker

I’m doing both of these, and going into it knowing I won’t do all of either one of them. 👍

As with any Art Challenge, I’d advise you to make it your own.

Every day or week or only one piece.

Only act within the art challenge month or do some prep beforehand.

Limited supplies or anything you can get your hands on.

Hand or digital.

Black & white or color or mix it up.

Whatever guidelines help you make art, because ultimately that’s what an art challenge is for: challenge yourself to make more than you would have otherwise.
