Bhutan has officially migrated its national digital identity system to the Ethereum blockchain, marking a significant step in decentralized governance. This move allows nearly 800,000 citizens to verify their identities and access government services using a self-sovereign ID model. Previously hosted on Polygon and Hyperledger Indy, the system is now fully integrated with Ethereum, with complete migration expected by early 2026.
Key highlights:
• The initiative was launched with support from Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi and co-founder Vitalik Buterin, alongside Bhutan’s Prime Minister and Crown Prince. • Bhutan’s National Digital Identity and GovTech teams led the integration, emphasizing transparency, privacy, and long-term digital security. • Bhutan is also notable for its crypto adoption, ranking fifth globally in Bitcoin holdings (11,286 BTC), mined using renewable hydropower A.
I’m curious to ask, why Ethereum?
Also, are national ID’s something that can be loaded onto Bitcoin Core 30.0’s bigger OP_RETURN now?
Let me know your thoughts.
