DARIO AMODEI β CEO of Anthropic. Earnest. Slightly amused. Wearing a vest like a man who has already priced the room.
KEVIN O'LEARY (MR. WONDERFUL) β Money with a pulse.
MARK CUBAN β Has done the math before you finished the sentence.
ROBERT HERJAVEC β Wants to believe. Cannot.
LORI GREINER β Wants to know who the customer is.
ANNOUNCER (V.O.) From the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City⦠it's Shark Tank.
KEVIN I heard the valuation rumor backstage. I assumed it was a typo.
MARK I assumed it was a typo in the currency.
ROBERT I've seen a lot of hockey sticks in my life, Kevin.
KEVIN You are a hockey stick, Robert.
(The doors open. DARIO walks the long walk. Confident. A man who has done 400 investor meetings and has the calves to prove it.)
DARIO Hi, Sharks. I'm Dario. I'm the CEO of Anthropic. We make Claude β the AI that writes your emails, your code, and, increasingly, your quarterly reports. Last Monday we filed an amended S-1 with the SEC. Third-quarter revenue: seventeen billion dollars. Up about 1,127 percent year over year.
LORI (sitting up) Okay. Now we're talking.
DARIO Nine months: thirty-three point two billion. Adjusted operating income in Q3: two and a half billion. Fifteen percent adjusted margin.
KEVIN Now I'm interested.
DARIO Unadjusted operating loss: five hundred sixty-seven million. Mostly because we bought five billion dollars of short-term compute that costs more than our long-term contracts. And a two-billion-dollar non-cash charge from our employee donation-matching program.
KEVIN You lost money donating. That's the most expensive generosity I've ever heard of.
DARIO Net loss for the quarter was twenty-three point three billion. That's a non-cash mark on convertible notes and SAFEs.
MARK So the loss is fake and the revenue is real.
DARIO The loss is accounting. The revenue is customers.
The apartment full of garish gold shit in The Devil's Advocate (1997) starring Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, and Al Pacino:
The apartment in question is Trump's multi-level private residence at the top of Trump Tower, 725 Fifth Avenue, and production used it essentially as-is β Versailles-style gilt, marble, and the Central Park views included. Screenwriter Tony Gilroy has told the story of how they were hunting for "the ugliest, most garish, horrifying real-estate developer apartment" and Trump "threw his apartment at us," adding that "we didn't have to [change anything]β¦ that's his f---ing s---bag apartment with all Versailles gilt and the high-rise windows"
I didn't know this. I guessed. Also lots of boobs in that movie, you won't be disappointed (Ladies, there's a Keanu ass and taint shot too)

Used to hang out with Erica in IRC back in the day. Glad she's doing well. Fuck your coordinated disclosure

Just another unhinged CNBC take

At the time of posting, I didn't know about any embargo. My contact had told me there was no embargo, and her contact had told her the same thing.
what did I fucking say about the inability for people to keep secrets? HOW MANY PEOPLE KNEW?

Hahahaha
Full disclosure would have made this obvious because the adults in the room could have discussed this openly and come to this conclusion

Honestly, with how good LLMs are at probing and finding vulnerabilities they're a bigger threat than Heartbleed was too

GEICO literally won't let me cancel the policy for a car I don't have. It asks a dozen questions trying to invent reasons to have a policy and then refuses to let you cancel.
Sometimes if you choose a different reason for why you want to cancel the policy it eventually replaces the blue "Cancel Policy" button at the bottom of the screen with "Maintain Policy" to send you back to the main page. Other times the button disappears completely.

So Rust is slop, and I guess Go is slop too because the guy who is head of all their crypto code is a slop coder
Elixir is slop
Python is slop
Perl is slop
I guess you'll have to go back to writing C/C++ and Ruby
this applies to "LLMs can never work, they only produce shit code" cheerleading too. Just because people are saying it doesn't mean it's true.

There's a new project people are raving about on the Fediverse but it's been heavily vibe coded and the users don't think it's been vibe coded and the authors are being very coy about its origins and people keep posting about it like it's the best new thing and I so badly want them to know that it's proof that you CAN get something good out of an LLM

You know, people dunked on FreeBSD for years for self-hosting their own SCM, issue tracker, CICD, etc etc instead of outsourcing it to other big tech freemium operations.
The chickens have come home to roost, and FreeBSD was always right.
FreeBSD ports changed Postfix to enable an LMDB build option and there's two incompatible LMDBs in the ports tree now (1.0 and pre-1.0) and this makes it impossible to have CFEngine installed at the same time as Postfix unless you remove the LMDB option and build your own Postfix package
weird, annoying

It occurs to me that all these smart TVs have another side effect: pushing viewers to only see what they want you to see.
Like Roku having a fake "Live TV". If they can trick into you to watching their bad internet stream, you're increasing their ad revenue.
They make it really hard for people to access their local TV channels, either via broadcast or cable. I'm aware it's technically possible but I spent an hour on the phone with my mom and she couldn't get it figured out. In her case she has a cable box but can't remember how it works and maybe her remote needed new batteries. But we spent 30 minutes looking for how to make the TV even try to use it.
But still. They aim to steal your attention and direct you into their revenue stream which as a side effect keeps you away from news/content relevant to your local community.

404media should be fucking ashamed for continuing to paint a false narrative that these "rare books" should be fetishized and people should care deeply about what happens to them.
This isn't even good investigative journalism; their work here has the quality of a fucking tabloid.
These writers hate big tech so much they're betting that their readership can be fomented and unified against these companies over a topic that the readers will never understand.
"The vast majority of books produced -- rare or not -- end up being shredded because they're absolutely useless and there is zero demand for them"
π BOOOOOORRRRRRIIIINGGGGGGG!!!!!
"The vast majority of books produced -- rare or not -- end up being shredded because they're absolutely useless and there is zero demand for them -- but now AI companies are buying them and scanning them before they get destroyed!"
:allears: HOLY SHIT TELL ME MORE
It's perfectly reasonable to hate what big tech has become. But if you're going to risk your reputation and journalism credentials to criticize them, at least stand on solid ground instead of relying on flimsy accusations that are so easily repelled when the whole scope of facts is presented.
