you're a thousand miles from home. you text your home server "install this app", it does. then you ask out loud for a photo, it finds and downloads it. the future is now.

umbrelOS 2.0. Out today.

Watch the keynote:

so turns out everything we've shipped so far in umbrelOS was the warmup.

we understand this is a bold claim. and we stand by it.

You can now connect two Umbrels in different locations and back one up to the other.

This already worked on the same network, but the latest Tailscale update in the Umbrel App Store removes the "same network" part. You can now mount folders from one Umbrel into another in Files, even across the world, and use that as a backup location.

So one Umbrel at home, one at your parents' place, and tada - you now have real offsite backups, fully self-hosted, on hardware you own.

You asked, and it's here!

Oof, we might need a new "Nostr" category in the App Store soon.

Two new Nostr apps just dropped:

• Gupt: Self-hosted, end-to-end encrypted messenger powered by Nostr. No phone number, no email, no account. Like Signal/Telegram, but your keys and messages are actually yours.

• DTAN Server: A torrent network with no central website. File sharing that runs over Nostr and peer-to-peer instead of one site everyone depends on (and that can vanish overnight).

https://apps.umbrel.com/app/dtan-server

Nostr VPN is now live on the Umbrel App Store!

It turns your Umbrel into a private mesh VPN, aka you can securely reach your Umbrel and all your devices from anywhere in the world.

Think Tailscale, but with no third-party company and no central control server in the middle.

sure, an ai agent running on your home server is cool but how about a team of them running in parallel, sharing memory, handling your discord, your team slack, your community, all from the umbrel on your shelf?

PSA: umbrelOS 1.7.2 is out now.

This is a security update that patches CopyFail (CVE-2026-31431), a recently disclosed vulnerability in the Linux kernel.

in five years your home server will run more software that matters to you than your phone does. agents that know your context, your habits, your finances, your family. running quietly. on hardware you own. welcome to the future.

LFG! Hermes Agent is live on the Umbrel App Store!

It's an AI agent that gets smarter the longer it runs, remembers stuff with persistent memory across sessions, learns your workflow, and autonomously creates its own reusable skills from experience.

And it's sandboxed like every Umbrel app so it can't touch anything it's not supposed to.

there's a version of the future where every household runs a small fleet of ai agents locally. one handles finances, one handles scheduling, one handles home automation, one handles communication.

none of them talk to the internet, all of them talk to each other, and your home server becomes the brain of your household.

we're closer to this than people think.

2TB: let me just try out this self-hosting thing 4TB: ok this is actually amazing 8TB: i am never uploading anything to someone else's server again 16TB: friends and family now come to me for storage. i am the cloud. i charge nothing. i am a generous god.
