Whoa. Lutheran upbringing throwback.

I'm just feeling content today. No big emotional upheavals, no drama at work or home. Got some laundry to do, but planning on a quiet day otherwise.

Last night I was opening a can of (whoop ass) diced tomatoes for dinner, and sliced open the side of my thumb. Ow. Almost a cliche injury, but my finger got tangled with the pull tab on the lid. No, I did not contribute any blood to our meal thankfully!

Well, Lu lucked out. I got a call from the vet shortly after my last post that their machine was broken, and they wouldn't be able to work on her teeth today. She's happily curled up in her bed next to my desk now!

I dropped Lu off at the vet for her dental cleaning this morning. I know they'll take great care of her, but I always get a sick feeling in my stomach. Logically I know she's 14 years old, and although she's in pretty dang good health, I could lose her at any time.

Anyway, gotta distract myself with some work today, as I won't be able to pick her up until this evening.

Quiet morning here before we head to church in an hour. Just finished my coffee while browsing my Nostr feed.

I definitely have a pinched nerve in my shoulder. Gotta suck it up and get into my chiropractor and possibly schedule a massage to get it on the road to recovery. The pain has been eye-watering, and I generally have a pretty high tolerance.

We had an amazing former coworker of Hubby's offer us the weekend at his cabin in Wisconsin. Since we already have plans with a mutual friend Saturday, we're just going to go up for tonight. His cabin has a real fireplace, and so we're going to relax, have some time together, and listen to the crackling flames for an evening and head back home tomorrow afternoon. So excited!

I might be kind of indifferent to some aspects of my new job, but the people and the team building is insanely awesome. A couple months ago they were asking for proposals for our celebratory staff appreciation day, and I suggested a local (local to me, anyway) apple orchard.

Long story short, I'm getting paid to go there today and hang out with people, and then going into the nearby town for lunch, which they're paying for. Even if it rains, it's gonna be a great day.

So tired today. Woke up at 2am with severe aching pain from the left side of my neck all the way down my shoulder blade. Yup, I somehow pulled a series of muscles in my sleep. I sat up for an hour to let the pain meds kick in, and fell back to sleep. Alarm went off at its regular time this morning and I think I heard my entire body sigh. Still hurts now. 😣

Sitting on the couch with Hubby this morning looking at light bulbs online (looking for some WiFi-capable ones to work with Home Assistant) while I drink my coffee. I'm on the upswing from my cold - very grateful it was mild.

Church this morning, and then we're going to go pick up our pre-order of Booya from a local charity. Very excited for it! Hubby has never had it, and I want to see his reaction. Too bad it's hot out again today. This is a dish best eaten when the weather is chilly to truly celebrate the harvest season.

So many thoughts in my head this morning, and not one of them wants to come out. Not a bad thing, just bleh. Brain on overload today.

Lu needs to get her teeth cleaned. Her vet ran a blood test and said she's healthy enough for it, despite her age. I'm worried both about the anesthesia and the cost. Hubby is not pleased about how much we've had to spend on her the last few months. I understand his point - she's 14 years old, mostly in good health, but I rebutted that we do this now, and it prevents an infection, pain, and a possible emergency visit in the future. We ended up having a good talk last night despite being on opposite sides of the issue. I love Lu desperately, but she is elderly, and I acknowledge that there will come a point when costly medical procedures just won't make sense. Dreading that future moment, but for now, she's gonna get her teeth cleaned.

I dreamed last night that I went back in time, but somehow it was just before Satoshi published his whitepaper. I remember running around trying to find a miner and some sort of item to hold all my bitcoin in something like a Best Buy with a few other people. 😋

Bit of a bummer for Lu. She had her six month checkup with the vet today, and her right eye is bad again, so she's back in the cone of shame while getting eye drops for the next 10 days or so. Seems to feel fine otherwise. Our vet even recommended a dosage of antihistamine, and it turns out I already take the same thing myself.

Hubby discovered Home Assistant this weekend, so we played with that all day Saturday and part of Sunday. Turns out we had a bad SD card, so I bought a new one today, flashed it, and it's running smooth as can be on my raspberry pi. Nice. 😎

Oof, it's been a day already. Lu pooped downstairs on the rug, when her potty pad was 10ft away. Got that cleaned up, and then had to head to a doc appointment.

From the time I walked in to when I finally got the heck outta dodge, it was over two hours. My doctor was running behind, we had a short visit, and then it was an obnoxiously long time to get my labs done, and the tech took her very sweet time getting two vials from me.

Meanwhile, my Alexa keeps sending notifications that Lu is at home barking her little head off, and there was nothing I could do.

It's over with now, and I'm happy to be back at my desk. Happy Thursday!

Gratefulness post: Stok now has a peppermint mocha cold brew (don't judge me). Lu is curled up snoozing in her bed next to my feet. We had a fan in the window and I was able to sleep with a comforter last night. I have a job to "go" to this morning. Hubby and I are relatively healthy. Found a good book to read, and have been slowly enjoying it the last few days. God is good.

Reading my morning news, I came across a link to the red carpet looks from some music event last night, and started scrolling through. I think I recognized maybe two out of the fifty or so "stars". Man, I'm getting old. I'm actually pretty okay with that, but at the same time it is a bit shocking how little I know (or care) about mainstream media or celebrity these days.

Took Lu out for her morning potty earlier, and suddenly she started hobbling, favoring her left front foot. I picked her up to look - no obvious cut or swelling, no rock or piece of something caught between her toe beans. I carried her the rest of the way home, got some video of her hobbling around the kitchen, and then she finished her breakfast and ran up the stairs to my office just like normal. :blobspin: Going to continue to monitor today to see if I need to get in with the vet, but she's sleeping normally in her bed now.

Had an okay weekend. Binged Neagley on Saturday (loved it!), and then finished a book off my TBR pile Sunday. Hubby was busy playing around creating macros for his work, and then organizing some of his piles of stuff, so it was nice to do our own things.

Feeling tired and kind of achy today. Had a headache on and off for a couple days now. Guessing it's just the old hormones pulling out their usual bag of tricks, but man, I could really use a break.

It's finally starting to feel like Fall around here! I have the window cracked in my office to let a little cool air in. Got an apple-scented candle wafting its sweet notes into the room, and my sweet pup curled up in her bed at my feet.

Not a whole lot going on around here. We have Lu's follow up vet appointment this afternoon to see if her eye is healing. I'm praying that it's had enough time that we can take her cone off. She's had so many (literal) run-ins with the stairs lately that she's becoming hesitant to go up or down, leaving me to carry her both ways. Not that I don't love snuggling Her Fuzziness, but often I have my hands full already.

I'm remembering 9/11 from 25 years ago today. I was a freshman in college, barely two weeks into it when the planes hit the towers.

My radio alarm clock had some news announcements going off when I woke up that day, but I didn't stop to listen as I got ready for my day. Made it to my first class and barely anyone was there - our TA mentioned something had happened in NYC.

I left class and walked back to my dorm, where we had a TV room that fit probably around 200 people. The space was packed as everyone was gathered in clusters, watching replays of the planes hitting the Twin Towers. I found my roommate who was freaking out and crying, as she had family in NY and wasn't able to get through to them (they were in upstate NY, and were fine - phone lines were just tied up from everyone having the same idea).

The next days were just a blur as everyone tried to process what had happened while also staying glued to the news and trying to capture every bit of commentary. I went home that weekend, and remember my dad mentioning how weird it was that there were no planes overhead.

Life felt a lot less simple after that.

Lu is desperate for food, even though dinner time is still an hour away. I've tried to reason with her, but there is no reasoning with a furry tyrant.

Have I said this already? My dream would be to have GrapheneOS running on a Fairphone.

Hubby and I went on a river cruise last night. While the boat was kind of old and in rough shape, the dinner they provided (advertised as fajitas, but really just taco fixins) and the views were fabulous. We had an amazing sunset, with pink clouds gradually darkening into cotton candy.

Quiet day here. Hubby is out putzing in the garage. Just finished my coffee and got a load of laundry in the wash while I scroll for a while.

Funny story from last night: I thought I'd try using a coconut lime exfoliating scrub I'd bought ages ago (that Hubby excavated from under the bathroom sink), and rubbed it into both arms and left leg. Quickly realized that it was slimy and wasn't washing off. Seeing as how I was in the shower, I wasn't really using my nose at the time, so when I did take a sniff, I got a rotten/sour smell and realized the oil in it had gone rancid. I then proceeded to take another shower, this time using a combination of shampoo and Hubby's body wash to rinse the stink off me. The smell was all over the bathroom and bedroom for ages. We had to use a liberal dose of air fresheners to get rid of it. :blobnauseated:

The expiration date on the container said the end of this month, so I thought I was safe. Lesson learned: always smell your shower products before applying.

Awoken by Hubby around 4 this morning as Lu had a few accidents overnight. I cleaned up, but it took me forever to fall back asleep.

Good afternoon Nostr friends.

Well, Sunday turned interesting. Lu's right eye was watering noticeably after we got home from church, and she kept pawing at it, so Hubby suggested we take her to the pet ER. Turns out she has an ulcer on that eye, and has to be in a cone of shame to let her eye heal with the help of some ointment I rub in it 3x daily. Poor girl.

We still made it to the fair today, while she hung out at our regular vet's office for a few hours. I ate too much sugar early on and felt a little sick, and then the rest of what I tried didn't hit the spot. We got sick of crowds pretty quickly, so only spent about two hours there. It was pretty dang humid as well, so nice to be home and showered now.

Quiet Sunday morning, sipping my coffee, waiting for Hubby to finish shaving and getting ready before we head out to church. (Yes, I am already set to go.)

Lu is curled up in her bed, and for some reason the AC is blasting, so it's freezing in here, and so I covered her up.

I used to eat scrambled eggs every day for breakfast. Now I have a bowl of (cold) quick oats with frozen blueberries, chia seeds, cacao nibs, ground flax, and some almond milk. (Sometimes a drizzle of agave or honey if I'm feeling sweet.) Keeps me full until mid-afternoon. So grateful to be able to work from home and make some better food choices for myself.

We took my MIL out for a belated birthday dinner last night, and she fell asleep in the car on the way home. I caught her head hanging down and looked back to see her, and kind of freaked that she was...well...😵 Thankfully she was not, but startled awake when we pulled up to the front door of her building. That was a bit stressful!

Hubby and I had an impromptu ice cream date night last night. There was apparently a whole pile of milkweed by the parking lot exit, as there were so many monarch butterflies flapping around that I thought it was fake at first. Easily over a dozen or more of the little guys fluttering around in a black and orange display. It was a beautiful sight.

Not a whole lot going on here today. Just glad to be employed and have my health. The great Minnesota State Fair starts this upcoming Thursday, and we're planning to go next Monday. Didn't go last year due to lack of interest, but this year I am excited and ready to eat my way around the grounds while taking in some great people-watching.

Not much work has been done today. I pulled out my dad's old Android and have been downloading all the new Zapstore app recommendations I've been seeing around here lately.

Enjoying playing with Armada, and the Roadstr app. Makes me really really wish there was an Amber signer equivalent for iOS. So seamless.

I have an L-shaped desk now, with my personal laptop on one side, and the work one on the other.

Kept going over to my personal computer and seeing what I thought was a smudge on the left lens of my glasses. Tried to clean it several times, getting more and more irritated as I went.

...Yeah. I have a lamp on behind me (when I'm at my own computer). It's just the reflection in my glasses. Sigh.

I'm in my flannel 90s throwback era today. White t-shirt (my dad's old shirt, it's like wearing a hug from him), flannel shirt and wide-leg jeans. My inner teenager is thrilled right now.

Hubby found me another keyboard he had stored away that is absolutely perfect. Low profile keys, quiet, and not so much pressure required to actually push them. I think I'll keep him. <3

I am amazed every day at my new job. The people are so kind - not just nice, which we know doesn't always extend below the surface - and the days fly by. I'm allowed to learn as fast or as slow as I want, and they encourage curiosity. I could just pinch myself. At the same time, I feel lots of guilt - talked to a few old coworkers yesterday via email, and they are struggling to make it through an incredibly busy and demanding season with no real end in sight. I wish I could help, but I remember being there too, and it's literally not my job anymore.

#AskNostr Any recommendations on a quiet keyboard? I'm looking for the exact opposite of mechanical. Hopefully a wireless one if possible, corded/bluetooth/dongle is fine too. Hubby is having me test out an old keyboard of his for my personal computer, and I absolutely hate the key click and feel.

Did a drive out of town about half an hour to a farm selling corn for $4/doz on Saturday, and then stopped to see our baby nieces as they live fairly close. Is there anything more awesome than being an auntie when a pair of 6-year-olds are excited to see you?

We struck out hard at almost all the things we planned on yesterday. The booya was already sold out by the time we got there. The craft fair where I intended to visit a coworker was filled with a bunch of ....well, Hubby put it, "my anti-people". And I couldn't even find her. And then we went to a small farmer's market nearby where I got a delicious honey vanilla latte, but then Hubby got mad at me ("too much kitschy crap") for buying a $3 little key chain that said, "Crazy Plant Lady". Sigh.

I did get some canning cucumbers and fresh dill and made some refrigerator pickles. Very excited to see how they turn out. I only had ground versions of most of the ingredients for the pickling spices, so I'm a little worried I overdid it. We'll see in a week or two!

Stopping at our friend's house on the way to church this morning to refill her cats' cater bowl and food while she and her husband are out of town. Looking forward to a few minutes of playing with some Siamese siblings.

Minnesota has a tradition called Booya. Hopefully we can grab a few cups from the local clubs and churches, as Hubby has never had it. (It's basically a stew made from recently harvested vegetables with some beef, cooked for hours and hours.)
