🎨 HOW HUMAN COLOR LIMITS SHAPED ART MOVEMENTS
(Perception → technique → style)
Artists weren’t just expressing feelings — they were probing the limits of human vision.
⸻
1️⃣ IMPRESSIONISM — Color is Context, Not Object
Key idea:
Color changes with light, atmosphere, and time.
Why it happened (perception):
• The brain adjusts color automatically (color constancy)
• Artists noticed reality didn’t match “local color”
What they did:
• Painted light effects instead of outlines
• Used broken color, visible brushstrokes
• Avoided black shadows (used blues/purples instead)
Perceptual insight:
Color is relational, not fixed.
Examples: • #Monet (haystacks at different times) • #Renoir, #Pissarro
⸻
2️⃣ POST-IMPRESSIONISM — Color as Structure
Key idea:
Color can organize space, not just decorate it.
Why it happened:
• The eye tracks contrast and edges more than hue
• Artists began exaggerating color to guide perception
What they did: • Non-naturalistic color choices
• Color blocks to stabilize form
Perceptual insight:
The brain prefers organized contrast over realism.
Examples: • #Cézanne (form through color planes) • #VanGogh (emotional contrast)
⸻
3️⃣ FAUVISM — Color Before Reality
Key idea:
Color can override object identity.
Why it happened: • Saturation drives arousal in the nervous system
• Hue intensity affects emotion more than accuracy
What they did:
• Extreme saturation
• Arbitrary color choices
Perceptual insight:
Emotional response precedes interpretation.
Examples: • #Matisse • #Derain
⸻
4️⃣ COLOR FIELD PAINTING — Color as Experience
Key idea:
Color itself is the subject.
Why it happened: • Large uniform fields overwhelm edge detection
• The brain starts “floating” without reference points
What they did:
• Massive areas of single or near-single hues
• Soft edges, slow gradients
Perceptual insight:
Remove objects → perception turns inward.
Examples: • #Rothko • #Newman
