What happens when connecting humanity becomes one man’s extraction machine? 👥🧾
MARK ZUCKERBERG — THE RECEIPTS
Let’s skip the “bringing people closer together” sermon and inspect the machinery.
🔑 WHAT DOES HE CONTROL?
Meta owns Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp—several of the world’s largest communication networks.
According to Meta’s 2026 proxy filing, Mark Zuckerberg controls approximately 60.8% of Meta’s total voting power.
Why?
Ordinary Class A shares receive one vote each.
His Class B shares receive ten.
He holds nearly all outstanding Class B shares.
So despite owning only a minority of Meta’s economic value, Zuckerberg possesses enough voting power to control shareholder outcomes.
That is not democratic governance.
That is a publicly traded company with a permanent digital king.
💰 WHO PROFITS?
Meta reported approximately $201 billion in total revenue for 2025.
Approximately $196 billion came from advertising.
That is about 97.6%.
Facebook is not primarily selling social connection.
It is selling advertisers the ability to reach, categorize and influence the people making those connections.
You create the photographs.
You write the posts.
You build the communities.
You reveal the relationships.
Meta keeps the behavioral map—and sells access to your attention.
👁️ WHAT WAS COLLECTED?
The Cambridge Analytica scandal was not merely “some data leaked.”
According to the SEC, Facebook learned by December 2015 that information connected to tens of millions of users had been improperly transferred to Cambridge Analytica.
The data included:
📍 Locations
🎂 Birthdays
👤 Names and genders
👍 Page likes
🧠 Personality profiles
Cambridge Analytica used the information in political advertising.
Facebook continued describing data misuse to investors as a hypothetical risk for more than two years after learning it had already happened.
⚖️ WHAT DID REGULATORS FIND?
In 2019:
💸 Facebook paid $5 billion to settle FTC allegations that it violated a 2012 privacy order and deceived users about their ability to control personal information.
💸 Facebook paid another $100 million to settle SEC charges over misleading disclosures concerning data misuse.
The FTC’s findings were especially savage:
Facebook allegedly used deceptive settings and disclosures, inadequately supervised third-party developers, used phone numbers collected for security in advertising and undermined users’ privacy choices.
Read that again:
Information provided for account security was also used to target advertising.
Even the lock became part of the extraction machine.
🇪🇺 DID IT STOP?
No.
In 2025, the European Commission fined Meta €200 million after finding that its “pay or consent” model violated the Digital Markets Act.
European users had effectively been offered two choices:
💳 Pay Meta money
or
👁️ Allow Meta to combine more personal data for advertising
The Commission found that Meta had failed to provide a proper equivalent service using less personal data.
Meta later committed to offering EU users a less-personalized advertising option.
Not because the business model spontaneously developed a conscience.
Because regulation forced the choice.
🚪 CAN ORDINARY PEOPLE LEAVE?
Technically, yes.
Meaningfully?
That is harder.
Leaving can mean abandoning:
👨👩👧 Family networks
📸 Personal archives
🫂 Community groups
🏪 Business audiences
💬 Messaging relationships
📣 Years of accumulated reach
A platform becomes powerful when leaving it means leaving pieces of your social life behind.
That is not interoperability.
That is captivity with a delete button.
THE GIFT:
Zuckerberg undeniably helped build tools that connected billions of people.
Families reunited.
Communities organized.
Small businesses found customers.
Ordinary people gained global publishing power.
THE RECEIPT:
Those human relationships were enclosed inside infrastructure controlled by one corporation—and ultimately one man.
Connection produced data.
Data produced prediction.
Prediction produced influence.
Influence produced approximately $196 billion in advertising revenue during 2025.
THE VERDICT:
Mark Zuckerberg did not merely connect humanity.
He positioned Meta between human beings—
then charged advertisers for what it learned by watching us reach for one another.
That is connection.
That is extraction.
And the receipts say they were never separate businesses.
