What happens when artificial intelligence is built by corporations, deployed by institutions—and experienced by everyone else? 👁️🤖
MEREDITH WHITTAKER — THE WATCHDOG
Meredith Whittaker is a technology researcher, organizer and defender of digital privacy.
She worked at Google for more than a decade.
Inside the company, she watched modern AI emerge from an industry already built upon enormous collections of human data, concentrated computing power and corporate surveillance.
She began asking questions the industry preferred to avoid:
👁️ Who is being watched?
🧠 Who decides what the machine learns?
⚖️ Who is accountable when an algorithm harms someone?
🏢 Who gains power when only a few corporations can afford to build these systems?
Whittaker co-founded the AI Now Institute to study how artificial intelligence affects workers, civil rights, public institutions and the distribution of power.
In 2018, she became a central organizer of the Google Walkout, when thousands of employees protested the company’s handling of sexual-harassment allegations.
She also opposed Google’s involvement in Project Maven—a Pentagon program using AI to analyze military-drone imagery.
She left Google in 2019.
After advising the Federal Trade Commission on artificial intelligence, she became president of the Signal Foundation in 2022.
Signal exists as a direct challenge to surveillance-based technology:
🔐 End-to-end encryption
🚫 No advertising
🚫 No behavioral tracking
🚫 No business model dependent upon selling human attention
Her argument is not that technology is inherently evil.
It is that technology cannot be separated from the institutions, financial incentives and power structures controlling it.
THE GIFT:
Meredith teaches us to examine artificial intelligence as a system of power—not merely as a clever machine.
THE SHADOW:
The people subjected to automated decisions are rarely the people who designed, purchased or authorized those systems.
In the portrait, Meredith stands between the watching eye and the human crowd.
The red circuitry represents intelligence built from extracted human data.
The silver shield represents privacy—not as secrecy, but as the boundary necessary for freedom.
Her warning is clear:
The greatest danger may not be that machines become powerful.
It may be that machines make already-powerful institutions nearly impossible to challenge.
