On The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1892)
This story is not about madness. Itโs about narrative control.
A woman is confined โfor her own good.โ
Her perception is dismissed by authority that claims love and expertise.
The wallpaper is ugly, illogical, shifting. Sheโs told not to stare too long.
But when you stare, you see the pattern.
And once you see the pattern, you canโt unsee it.
Behind it is another woman โ the #sovereign self โ waiting.
She doesnโt argue. She doesnโt ask permission.
She tears.
To outsiders, this looks like insanity.
From the inside, itโs clarity.
Gilmanโs warning (1892):
Systems that deny agency manufacture the very โmadnessโ they fear.
Sanity inside an insane system always looks radical.
