More than three years ago, Meta stopped making news available in Canada. This was in response to the country's Online News Act, which was designed to force tech giants to pay publishers. Instead, news platforms lost traffic and revenue, "shadow media" accounts that posted other outlets' reporting proliferated, and while Google agreed to pay publishers $100 million a year, the big winners were legacy media organizations. "If a small group of digital publishers like blogTO got screwed along the way, I suppose we were just collateral damage," writes Tim Shore, who founded the Toronto-based local news site in 2004.

McClatchy Media, owner of Pulitzer Prize-winning papers including the Miami Herald, Lexington Herald-Leader, and Sacramento Bee, laid off dozens of reporters last week. Now, it's positioning AI as the savior of its freefalling business, with CEO Tony Hunter telling journalists in a contentious, off-the-record town hall: “We have a company-wide effort to agentify the entire enterprise." Straight Arrow News says AI-generated content is already creeping in, with data indicating that in some recent months, the percentage hit 20% on some sites.

Media companies USA Today and McClatchy have both laid off journalists in the past week, and hundreds of reporters already lost their jobs this year. For his blog, Morning Brew founder Josh Sternberg writes about how the crumbling of the media affects democracy. "We see the erosion of trust of the institution [of the press], while at the same time we have an authoritarian in the White House, a Supreme Court majority that lives by the “rules for thee, but not for me” philosophy, and Congress that is so neutered that its protagonist disappears (Where is Mitch, by the way?) and no one bats an eye."

According to Pew Research Center, around 10 percent of 500,000 English-language webpages from the last five years were written or substantially edited by AI. The organization determined this using a tool called Open Pangram, which checks text for language patterns, identifying words, phrases and linguistic quirks that are considered typically of AI. When their data is filtered for content published after the release of ChatGPT, signs of AI authorship can be found in over one-third of pages. Here's the full story.

U.S. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appeared on a panel together at the 62nd Munich Security Conference along with Matthew Whittaker, United States ambassador to NATO. They talked about complicated issues of foreign policy and geo-diplomacy for an hour or so and it was, at the time, seen as an uncontroversial, non-newsworthy conversation. Yet a few days later, the press was full of stories about their slip-ups and lack of knowledge. Emily Horne, a former National Security Council and State Department spokesperson, did a deep dive into what had happened. What she found? Stories from "pink slime" sites — local news publications that are largely funded by right-wing dark money groups — picked up and "laundered" into real news by POLITICO, The New York Times and more.
