We had a wonderful Samhain gig yesterday. It was a great atmosphere, everyone was singing along and clapping... I really enjoyed playing this gig and I'm thankful for that 🙏
But afterwards, I am left with a tinge of sadness.
The bar no longer has the budget to pay us what they used to, so we set up a QR code for tips, hoping to make up the difference.
Of about 50 people in the audience, only two left tips, giving us 20 euros between four of us. 5 euros per person.
My train journey cost 12.20 euros. I had my bow rehaired before the gig, which was 90 euros. Rosin, strings, sound equipment, all cost money. And then there is the time and effort that goes into preparing the set. That's before even touching on the years of practice and instruction it takes to acquire the skills.
What kind of society have we created, where people don't expect to pay anything for music? Maybe they all thought someone else would pay, but only two actually put their hands in their own pockets.
It's just as well I don't do this for the money, but it leaves an ache in my heart that this is the reality for musicians now 🥲💔
So please, don't be that person. If you enjoyed the music, pay the musicans. Even a small amount would go a long way if everyone did the same

Today I'm trekking into Helsinki to get my bow rehaired before our Samhain gig. 🎻
Been working on some songs together this week. I've been wanting to cover this one for years! 🤩
I don't suppose there are many Helsinki folks here, but in case there are: 19:30 on Saturday at O'Malley's (ground floor of the Torni Hotel).
It will be a treat! 🎃

The autumn colours are almost finished and the clocks have gone back... it will be 6 months before we see any foliage again and it now gets dark around 4pm. 🌙
Time to get the Christmas lights out? (or as I like to call them, "seasonal" lights) 😂

Actually feeling kind of optimistic today!
My husband is starting his on-the-job training today. After all the drama with the first two placements that fell through, he managed to get a spot at one of the best companies in Finland. They even provide lunch!
The start of a new beginning? 🤞

For my next sewing project, I picked something a bit simpler: I made a hat!
It's getting to about -3°C in the mornings and I needed something to fit under my bike helmet
Pretty happy with the result 👌

Been back at the bike track today. Feels good to be in the forest after being sick and spending too much time indoors 🌲
It's clear though my son's bike is much too small for him. Hope we can come back with a bigger one in the spring 🤞

"And if I had a thing to give you I would tell you one more time That the world is always turning toward the morning"
The most precious songs are the ones connected to a person. This one I learned at the sessions from my dear friend Keith. He is like my family far from home, always looking out for me ❤️

Oh yeah, remember this? I was not wrong 🙃
Fortunately this time my husband had another offer waiting for him, so he's still starting a new job, just not the one we thought 😅
I can't keep up

Sometimes it feels so funny to me that I really birthed this little Finn.
4 years old and salmiakki is a casual sweet treat for him. When we travel, we have to pack large quantities of rye bread.
British children could never 😂
I did it, sewed my first item of clothing 😭
This summer, in the spirit of "you can just do things", I decided to get a sewing machine and learn to make my own clothes. 🪡🧵
It seemed like my body shape was once again out of fashion (was it ever in fashion?), and I couldn't find anything I actually wanted to wear in the shops.
I chose a "beginner-friendly" pair of pyjamas to start with, but of course I had to complicate things by lengthening the shorts into full-length trousers.
When I was able to start trying them on, I also realised I wasn't happy with the fit. The rise was too short in the front and the legs were too wide, so instead of sticking with the pattern, I also changed the foldover waistband into an attached waistband for extra length, and altered the legs to fit by pinning them on myself.
So what have I learned?
🐢 Pacing. Better to work in short focused bursts than exceed my limits and make mistakes 🌟Overcoming perfectionism. I always want to be outstanding at everything right away, and it's hard for me when there's a gap between my practical skills and the picture I have in my head 🧩Problem-solving. The pattern didn't fit, so I made it fit. And the instructions were minimal so I had to do a lot of figuring things out on my own. By the end, I really started to get a feel for how the pieces fit together.
The result? A perfectly fitting pair of pyjama bottoms 👌
Now I just need to get over all the little imperfections that only I know are there 😅

One very excited 4yo boy got his first football kit today, after moving up to the big boys' football school. It was about time because he was absolutely dominating in the smaller kids' group 😅
Combination of big for his age, oldest in his year group, and athletically gifted (he doesn't get it from me, I tell you 🙈)
