I was planning to get a lot more done this week, like finishing Mastodon Bird UI for v5, but the entire week has been a feverish nightmare. It's day 4 of the flu, or whatever this is. My throat feels like sandpaper, my lips are chapped, and I have a painful aphthous ulcer. My neck and shoulder issues have gotten worse since it's already difficult to sleep anyway, plus I'm dealing with stomach problems, a runny nose, and a cough. I'm just documenting this here because I have nothing else to do, lol.

Before this, I had been mostly healthy for 10 months, so I guess it was about time. We shouldn't take good health for granted, lesson learned.

The upside is that things like a hot shower, sauna, pyjamas, and Finnish mulled wine (glögi) feel heavenly. They usually do anyway, but right now the feeling is amplified by 1000.

• Fixed insufficient ActivityPub identifier verification. Mastodon decides what to trust based on which server something comes from, and a redirect to another domain could get around that check (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/security/advisories/GHSA-288h-6j8h-6x5j).
• Extra checks on the keys other servers use to sign what they send us.
• Updated dependencies with security advisories: excon, css_parser, pghero, sanitize and aws-sdk-s3.
• Ruby was updated to 4.0.9.

Luku.app now has profiles. I'm wondering whether I should finally add Fediverse or ActivityPub support in some form.

Side note: I know Bookwyrm exists, but I don't want my "reading/book account" to be a full instance. At least not yet, or in the traditional form. I have the same issue with having a Pixelfed account or another fediverse account for specific categories of content. I think it kinda limits users.

Here's how I imagine it working: I could share a book or review from whatever account I'm using, for example my main Mastodon account. Those discussions and comments would then link to the app. The person shouldn't be divided across accounts. The person is the channel, and the posts can come from wherever.

Went through my notes. Since 2005 I’ve used or tested 19 browsers: Opera, Firefox, Swiftfox, Chrome, Edge, Brave, ungoogled-chromium, Brave Origin as daily drivers, and out of curiosity: IE, Safari, Arora, Epiphany, Midori, Epic, Vivaldi, Min, Floorp, Zen and Orion along the way.

Today I moved back to Brave Origin Nightly from ungoogled-chromium on both macOS and Linux. Here’s why.

ungoogled-chromium clear wins:

• No telemetry and no connections to any vendor, Google included.
• Full uBlock Origin. It still carries a patch that keeps Manifest V2 extensions working.
• Fingerprinting flags for canvas, client rects and WebGL noise.
• Plain Chromium without anything added on top. The best score in Speedometer 3.1 on Apple Silicon: 52.4 against Brave’s 49.2. That’s about 6%, which you can’t really see in daily use.

Inconveniences:

• Updates are manual, and something breaks every time. On macOS every update means copying the Widevine CDM back, re-signing the app and re-granting camera, microphone and screen recording permissions.
• Extensions don’t update on their own without a helper extension. An outdated uBlock Origin is the main reason YouTube breaks.
• YouTube worked badly even so.
• Netflix and Spotify and other DRM-based sites can’t work on macOS at all anymore. Since 2023 Netflix requires a browser signed by Widevine (VMP) on macOS and Windows, and Google doesn’t sign open source forks. I spent an evening trying to solve this.
• Logins reset sometimes when Chromium can’t read its Keychain key, and OAuth windows from other apps open blank.
• Preloading is stripped, so pages never feel as instant as in Brave.

Why Brave Origin fixes these for me:

• Updates are automatic and nothing breaks. Shields handles ads and YouTube’s ad-blocker countermeasures on its own, with filter lists updated automatically.
• Its blocking engine is written in Rust, which I like.
• Netflix, Spotify and Meet work, because Brave is VMP-signed.
• It uses less memory than ungoogled-chromium in every benchmark I found, 23% less in a 15-tab test.
• Brave Origin removes bloat like Leo AI, the crypto wallet, Rewards, the VPN, News and the telemetry (daily ping, crash reports, P3A).
• Fingerprinting is randomized by default.
• The new tab page can be set to a blank page, and Focus Mode gives a frameless, minimal window.

The trade-off: Brave Origin still talks to Brave’s servers for updates, components and filter lists. ungoogled-chromium talks to nobody. For me, a browser that works every day matters more than that last bit of privacy, since everything else is being taken care of. I can work with this.

And before anyone says Firefox or FF based: I have huge issues with its UI and UX. I'm used to bookmarkless browsing, which means I have very little bookmarks and just type a word and hit enter. This doesn't work well in FF. In Chromium I type a word, hit enter and I’m there. DRM-content and YouTube adblocking hit the same constraints in FF based browsers. Brave is the only one that does this well.

You can move from one Mastodon server to another and take your followers and following with you, but not your posts. The issue for post migration has been open since 2019, has over 300 comments, and is still unresolved. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423

I think this remains as a deadlock because everyone keeps trying to solve the whole problem at once. Which seems funny, since the new v5 alpha just released on mastodon.social has an empty right column "for future content".

On the fediverse, a post's identity is its address on the server where it was written. A copy on a new server gets a new address. Replies, boosts, and likes on other servers still point to the old one, and the new server can't prove you wrote something in 2019. Doing this "properly" requires protocol changes, and that's why nothing has happened for 7 years.

But I don't think most people care about any of that. They want their posts safe on their profile, to own and browse their posts freely. I think losing old like counts and reply threads is fine, but currently we are losing everything when a server goes down.

Here is my proof of concept. While working on our Mastodon 5 alpha dev server, I needed real content, so I wrote a small script that copies my account's posts from our live server to the test server. It's about 100 lines of Ruby. It reads the public posts through the Mastodon API, creates them with their original dates, downloads the images and videos, and recreates boosts. The posts look like they've always been there.

Mastodon already gives you everything you need for this. Go to Settings, Import and export, Request your archive, and you get a zip with all your posts and media. The import page accepts follows, blocks, mutes, domain blocks, bookmarks, lists, and filters. Posts are the one thing it doesn't accept back.

So the minimum version would be:

• Upload your archive to the new server.
• Your posts appear on your profile with their original dates and media.
• Each post is marked as imported, with a link back to the original.

No protocol changes, no trust problems, and nobody gets their feed flooded. It's your archive, readable on your profile.

Federating the old posts could come later. One idea: a background job that slowly makes the imported posts known to other servers, a few at a time, so it never looks like a flood.

Another idea: send nothing at all and let other servers fetch a post when someone opens it.

But these are just ideas that popped into my head just now.

A read-only archive on your new profile would already be better than what we have now, which is nothing.

I've realized what causes my social anxiety on social media these days and why. It's probably due to that massive past fedi HOA pile-on, but also the nature of the fediverse and social media in general in today's world. People feed on hate. They like rage baits, they like to spark discussion in controversial and angry topics.

You see, we have freedom and power here. Most of us joined or started our own servers because we didn't have a place of our own anywhere else when things turned to shit. It's nice when a place feels comfortable and up your alley. But if you have a hateful agenda, you can keep pushing it here. You're with your own mob or on your own server, with nobody moderating you. Naturally, people can block or fediblock, but some aren't used to blocking or don't take drastic measures. So inflammatory behavior spreads.

Many things are allowed more freely here than on commercial social media, where automatic moderation cuts down even normal posts. Here, we have less responsibility for what we say, who we say it to, and how we say it. So I'd like to see more kindness spread. Fediblocks work to a certain degree, but there's often only one truth, and that's the truth your instance has. People are generally more inclusive here, but that tolerance runs out, for example, when it comes to people with anxiety disorders or those whose values don't quite align with their own.

Thankfully, there are tools to help: block, mute, fediblock. And take breaks from social media. I sometimes take days off. I rarely read the news anymore and avoid reading about politics or tech on social media. RSS is often much more peaceful. Have a calm evening, folks.

Valtiovarainministeriö listaa jälleen uusia leikkauskohteita. Pöydällä ovat muun muassa takuueläkkeen ja lapsilisän lakkauttaminen.

Takuueläke on Suomen vähimmäiseläke. Sitä saavat ne, joiden muut eläkkeet jäävät kaikkein pienimmiksi. Hyvin moni heistä on työkyvyttömyyseläkkeellä, usein nuorena tai keski-ikäisenä sairastunut, jolle ei ole ehtinyt kertyä työeläkettä. He eivät voi paikata menetystä tekemällä enemmän töitä.

"Myös takuueläkkeen varalta VM:stä löytyy ideoita. Takuueläkkeen lakkauttaminen vahvistaisi julkista taloutta nettona noin 160 miljoonalla eurolla. Se lisäisi pienituloisimpien eläkeläisten riippuvuutta toimeentulotuesta."

Toimeentulotukea heitetään aina vastauksena muiden tukien korvaavana. Tässä on kuitenkin useampi uusi haaste, joista vähäisin ei ole se, että tätä tukea on todella vittumaista hakea (pardon my French). Jos tukia näin siirrellään, miten tätä voi edes perustella sitten "säästöllä"?

Toimeentulotuki lasketaan koko perheen tuloista, joten jos työkyvyttömän puoliso käy töissä, perhe menettää takuueläkkeen kokonaan ilman mitään korvaavaa tukea. Sama koskee lapsilisää. Leikkaus osuu suoraan perheisiin, joissa yksi vanhempi on sairauden vuoksi pudonnut työelämästä ja toinen kantaa perheen taloutta yksin.

Julkista taloutta on vahvistettava, siitä ei ole epäselvyyttä. Kysymys on siitä, keneltä nämä säästöt otetaan. Takuueläke ja lapsilisä ovat summina pieniä, mutta niitä saaville ne ovat iso osa pärjäämistä.

Kevään vaaleissa täytyy kysyä ehdokkailta, kannattavatko he näitä leikkauksia ja äänestää heitä, jotka ovat leikkauksia vastaan.

In life and on social media, I've learned it's best to respond to hate with kind, pragmatic discussion - or not respond at all. If I can't do either peacefully, or if the whole thing is making me anxious, it's best to block, mute, and move on.

Let's respond with kindness today, because responding to hate with hate makes things worse, no matter the subject. You may not like everyone, but that doesn't give you the right to be nasty to people. That's my stance, at least, as a pacficist, without an ounce of toxic positivity. Have a nice Monday!
