Since
has been asking some interesting questions about fiction, I wanted to ask about something that has been done well in a series I'm reading, summed up as:
"The good guys suffer a substantial loss and the bad guys seem to prevail at the end of each book in the series."
Any other books you can recommend that do this?
If you liked Ayn Rand's fiction you might like Doug Casey's "High Ground" series: "Speculator", "Drug Lord", "Assassin" and "Terrorist".
Spoiler... the main bad guy runs the Federal Reserve. 🤑
hear me out, CPFP but IRL 😀

TIL that Wells Fargo only lets you transfer $500 to a newly added external account if that account is from $cashapp. The default is $5000 for a bank or credit union. Support told me they have a different lower limit due to "fraud" risk but give no message about why higher transfers failed on the web site.
Is this just a blatant attempt to supress a competitor with a new more dynamic business model?
Tell your lawyers
I'd be happy to provide evidence about my experience.

PSA: On chain fees are very low right now. If you are running Phoenix wallet in legacy mode, please upgrade your channels.
"Phoenix v2 was released 1 year ago and v1 legacy channels will soon be closed. The v2 upgrade notices in the v1 legacy mode have been updated. Users that are still using the legacy mode should migrate as soon as possible. Note that this migration to v2 is automated, and free.
Users using v2 (that is, most people) are not affected. Check the Settings > About screen to verify what version you are using."

Any Twitch streamers out there interested in receiving Bitcoin via bolt-12 ?
I'm playing around with a self custodial solution that you can run on your PC. I'm looking for feedback on what features are important.

Useful discussion on Xitter about how to check if your BIP-353 DNS records have DNSSEC setup correctly:
Almost there! You must enable DNSSEC on your domain.
This should contain "AD":true

"🧪 Phoenix now supports BIP-353 LN addresses
To create your address (must have a channel):
Phoenix (android/ios/server) can all send to both BIP-353 and LNURL addresses"

Now we just need nostr zaps support for BIP-353..

Bitcoin has forced the banking system to make same day bank-to-bank transfers possible. Would this have even happened if Bitcoin had not shown this was possible in practice for large transfers? Would the banking system have felt compelled to make it possible? I honestly don't think so. Think about that when someone natters on about how governments will somehow stomp out Bitcoin. It's too late.
"On May 3rd, 2024, @PhoenixWallet will be removed from US app stores.
Users from the US should empty their wallet:
We highly recommend not force-closing channels, as on-chain fees could be significant."
Reposting from bird site post by Laurent MT. "Here we go again"
"...the defendants, developed, marketed, and operated a cryptocurrency mixing service known as Samourai Wallet (““Samourai”), an unlicensed money transmitting business from which they earned millions of dollars in fees. Samourai unlawfully combined multiple unique features to execute anonymous financial transactions valued at over $2 billion in cryptocurrency for its customers. While offering Samourai as a “privacy” service, the defendants knew that it was a haven for criminals to engage in large-scale money laundering and sanctions evasion. Indeed, as the defendants intended and well knew, a substantial portion of the funds that Samourai processed were criminal proceeds passed through Samourai for purposes of concealment. Indeed, during the relevant period, Samourai laundered over $100 million dollars of crime proceeds originating from, among other criminal sources: illegal darkweb markets, such as Silk Road and Hydra Market; various wire fraud and computer fraud schemes, including a web-server intrusion, a spear phishing scheme, and schemes to defraud multiple decentralized finance protocols; and other illegal activities."

The Swedish central bank (the Riksbank) must ask parliment for funding if their balance sheet goes more than 40B kronor negative. They are currently 18B kronor in the hole. This recent Swedish law related to funding the Riksbank was alledgedly passed to ensure the central bank's independence...

In the US the Fed is allowed to count their negative balance as an asset because they can use it to offset profits they would theoretically be required to pay the US Treasury in the future. ht
https://www.lynalden.com/broke-federal-reserve/
In March the tax payers in Sweden will get a request for the equivalent of $7B to fund the Riksbank. This may be a a hard sell when inflation is running hot, interest rates are high, home prices are down and the economy is generally faultering. Keep in mind also that the government will need to issue bonds to pay to recapitalize the Riksbank at a time when the Swedish Krona is at an all time low. Coincidentally, a few weeks ago the Riksbank pledge to spend up to $8B USD in reserves to prop up the Krona by March.
These two programs taken together do not install a feeling of bank independence to my mind. Has anyone seen this discussed elsewhere? I would love to read more analysis about how these moves by the Riksbank will interact. Any thoughts on this
?
