Foot-gun = no fun.

I ran a small Cashu mint for 1 year. Yesterday I found it empty. About 1.5M sats gone, and only around 247k had ever been put in.

Nobody broke into my server. Nobody touched my node. I did this to myself.

The setup file that comes with the software has a line that says, in plain words, "put a random key here." It even tells you the command to make one. I did not run the command. I pasted the instruction itself in as my key and hit go.

It started up fine. That was the problem. For months my mint's secret key was a sentence that anyone who has ever opened that setup file has seen. Eventually somebody noticed, used it to print themselves fake money from my mint, and cashed it out.

I was stupid twice.

Once, because I never read the one line you are supposed to read twice. Twice, because I saw it start and took that as "it's safe."

Nutshell software does refuse to start on a couple of obviously fake keys. It just does not refuse its own example. Should it? Yes, and I have sent them a fix. Should I have checked instead of assuming? Also yes.

If I never looked at what the guard rail was, I do not get to blame the guard rail. The mint is off for good.

Open source is retards helping retards. This week I was the retard. So here is my turn helping: a fix and a warning. I still believe in this stuff. The bug that got me was in a file I could open, read, fix, and send back the same day. That is the whole point.

Even thought it’s just 19 lines of code, the thought that thousands of people will use code I contributed is so inspiring!

Switching from IBIT to FBTC is like two kids endlessly trading the exact same Bitcoin IOU back and forth, but the actual Bitcoin never leaves Coinbase Custody’s vault.

• Kid A sells his “BlackRock Bitcoin IOU” and uses the dollars to buy Kid B’s “Fidelity Bitcoin IOU.”
• Both IOUs are backed 1-to-1 by the very same stack of Bitcoin sitting untouched in a Coinbase cold wallet.
• No Bitcoin is ever handed from BlackRock to Fidelity.
• No Bitcoin is handed from Fidelity to BlackRock.
• Coinbase Custody doesn’t move a single satoshi between segregated client wallets — why would they? Net exposure for the entire system hasn’t changed by one atom.
• The Bitcoin ledger (the real blockchain) never nothing, zero transactions, zero fees, zero anything. Dead silence. 🔕

Yet the price on every exchange, every Bloomberg terminal, every ETF ticker jumps around like crazy because millions of kids (institutions, retail, algos) are frantically swapping these IOUs on a regulated playground called the stock market.

The actual Bitcoin never moved as much as a brick in a bank vault moves when you swap a BlackRock vault receipt for a Fidelity vault receipt.

There was no tree in the woods that fell, so of course it didn’t make noise. The only thing that made noise was a bunch of tourists trading colored paper claims while the real Bitcoin sat there, perfectly silent.

Consensus doesn’t care 

Bitcoin can’t go to zero because like 10% the supply is lost in some dude’s old Dell from 2013 and those coins ain’t ever hitting the market again. So the rest of us are basically passing around the only sats that are left, and someone’s always going to need it to escape inflation, that’s worth something; to someone, somewhere.

You can’t have $0 Bitcoin when some Chad from Omaha is still stacking $5 a week.

You sell 0% of the bitcoin you never buy

You buy 100% of the bitcoin you never sell
