tried some LLM style AIs for transcribing music into MIDI and from there to sheetmusic/tablatures, dedicated ones and not dedicated to this task

they are both incredibly shit and incredibly amazing at the same time

i used a song that was a single instrument (standard acoustic guitar), played in varying difficulties of recognition (single high notes, single low notes, combined high and low notes, strums, strums + high notes overlayed, notes and strums alternating). The song had a strong delay effect, and a weak reverb effect.

As long as notes were single, all notes were perfectly transcribed. no wrong note, nor any hallucinatory notes.

Where notes were double, usually all notes existed in transcription, but it stopped understanding that delay is delay and every delay note was written separately. In addition, about an extra 20~~ish% of notes were pure hallucinations, that just didnt exist. Some were in key, some not.

It was quite good at picking out every note in a 6 note up-down strum pattern, quite good. Phenomenal.

It succeeded in picking out over half the notes that were overlaid a 6-note-strum. Few hallucinations.

Low-register strum (only playing the 2 or 3 lowest strums) was poor, lots of hallucinations. The low register strums werent distorted, but were played somewhat percussively. This part of the song that had percussive-ish elements in it, was very poorly detected. Noise and distortion seems to be a serious enemy of LLM AI note detection. Overall, it got about half of the total of stuff that was going on, and lots of hallucinations all around.

I ran the ones that got better results again , and as to be expected, the 2nd and 3rd run results were different. As expected, if the seed is different for the rng denoiser robot.

Suprisingly, i found the best one to be MuScriptor, an open model.

TIME SAVED? if you know NOTHING about music and DAWs, yes. If you already have DAWs and have previous experience with DAWs, maybe. If you already have pre-LLM era note detection software that gives you best guesstimates more accurately, then time is not saved. time can be lost instead depending on level of adeptness with previously existing software.

One will still have to go through the entire process of decyphering the AI's transcription and rewriting it into a useable sheet of music.

Interesting sidebit - I had the guitar tablatures also made from the midis (written technique of how to physicall play the guitar since unlike the piano, there's multiple ways to play the same thing on the guitar), and some made really good ones, and others not so really good ones.
